Yes, Archie is a cockroach who uses his boss's typewriter at night by jumping on one key at a time, and thus cannot do caps (apparently there is no CAPS LOCK or it's broken). He writes charming stories, many of which include Mehitabel the cat. They're quite fun. Rosalie Sorrels used to sing a song about Mehitabel.

EDI, do you know these stories? (something tells me EDI would know them)

Several years ago I did some fixes on a concert version of the musical version of ARCHY & MEHITABEL with Lee Wilkof as Archy and Taylor Dane as Mehitabel.  Marc Kudisch played the tom cat boyfriend of Mehitabel and there were at least two others in the cast but I've forgotten them as well as the name of the difficult musical director.  BK was going to record it but I believe Ms Dane's management kiboshed it.

All right.  I am now, officially, depressed.

Earlier this week, one of my favorite co-workers announced he will be taking a better job with another County agency, effective Nov. 2.

That was a shock, but I wish him well.

Today, another favorite co-worker announced he will be leaving County employment, effective Nov. 2, and will go to work for a brokerage firm that pays much more money and allows him to work out of his home.

That does not leave me with "much" in the way of co-workers I truly love to be around.  And now I'm glum.

My boss is in Argentina until November 1.  She knows about the first guy leaving, but she will be stunned to learn about the other one.

EDI, do you know these stories? (

::waves hand in frantic bid for attention:

I do! I do! (This is NOT a marital vow)

DON MARQUIS
Quote
THEY ARE THE MOST UNLIKELY OF FRIENDS: Archy is a cockroach with the soul of a poet, and Mehitabel is an alley cat with a celebrated past -- she claims she was Cleopatra in a previous life. Together, cockroach and cat are the foundation of one of the most engaging collections of light poetry to come out of the twentieth century.

"expression is the need of my soul," declares Archy, who labored as a free-verse poet in an earlier incarnation. At night, alone, he dives furiously on the keys of Don Marquis' typewriter to describe a cockroach's view of the world, rich with cynicism and humor. It's difficult enough to operate the typewriter's return bar to get a fresh line of paper; all of Archy's dispatches are written lowercase, and without punctuation, because he is unable to hit both shift and letter keys to produce a capital letter.

"boss i am disappointed in some of your readers," he writes, weary of having to explain the mechanics of his literary output. " ... they are always interested in technical details when the main question is whether the stuff is literature or not."

It is.

This Web page celebrates the genius of Don Marquis, the creator of Archy and Mehitabel. Marquis was a writer for The Evening Sun in New York when, in 1916, he introduced Archy the cockroach in his daily column, The Sun Dial. For six years Archy's prodigious output found a home in The Evening Sun (later renamed The Sun), and for four years after that in the New York Tribune. When Marquis left newspapering in 1926 he took Archy with him, to Collier's magazine and a handful of other publications. In all, he wrote nearly 500 sketches featuring Archy, Mehitabel, Pete the pup, Freddy the rat, and assorted fleas, spiders, ghosts and martians. The vast majority of the sketches were written under daily deadline pressure, but the simplicity of their style and the humanness of cockroach and cat give them timeless appeal.

Note It was also a shortlived broadway Musical "Shinbone Alley (1975) - with:

Eddie Bracken -- archy
Eartha Kitt -- mehitabel

An animated film version of the Archy and Mehitabel stories, also called Shinbone Alley,
with a script by Joe Darion "based on the book for the musical play by Darion, Mel Brooks" was made in 1971 with Carol Channing as the voice of Mehitabel. Eddie Bracken again played Archy.

Just got an interesting e-mail from the head of the LA Festival of New Musicals, saying she'd placed the Brain at a theater in Anaheim, and that I'd be contacted about the details.  I don't know what "placed" means exactly, whether this theater does its own production with its own creative team or just pays for the show and we come and do it (as I understand it, each theater must pay for their production) - if it's the former, I'll have to meet with them and be comfortable that they'd do the show proud, if it's the latter, I have to look at the theater.  Still, grand to be offered.

good luck something nice happens

Is it worth the waiting for?
If we live 'til eighty four
All we ever get is gru...el!

Ev'ry day we say our prayer --
Will they change the bill of fare?
Still we get the same old gru...el!

There is not a cust, not a crumb can we find,
Can we beg, can we borrow, or cadge,
But there's nothing to stop us from getting a thrill
When we all close our eyes and imag...ine

Food, glorious food!

thank you, der B. I'd hate to think that there was a single H/K out there who wasn't "in the know" about A&M. Now my anxieties are put to rest.

OK, Bruce wants to talk about food.

I'm not usually a cake fan--most cakes, in my opinion, look wonderful, but the taste is too sugary and are disappointing. The coconut cake at the Brooklyn diner was truly to die for. Gawd, it was GOOD!

NY has always been a major food city. Has LA ever been that? Good places here and there, but overall?

That has exhausted my thoughts on food.

DR CILLA LIZ - what a DAY!!!  Mercury retrograde....I think we have had several flat tires on HHW in the past few days, including mine.

I am sorry to hear about Callie...but you both have some vibes coming your way from the World of Wisdom and I am burning a nice yellow healing candle for you both.

DR RLP - shocking turn of events...it is like a family member moving away.  Perhaps the replacements will be fun!
