Soapbox.

My niece is about receive her PhD in Social Research. She is an authority on HIV in Pregnancy issues.  She knows so little about the world!

Of course the Internet makes us all authorities on anything we wish.
It's amazing how many parents are authorities on education and the stages of psychological and learning development in children.

Must be a soapbox day here.

I've been tempted to obtain a Doctorate on line. (as a joke).

I also find it amusing (and sad) that some ex Forces people think they should be called, General, Major. Captain or whatever in civilian life.

Maybe it is just a different society here. No way would anyone have called their father "Sir" in Australia.

When DH Richard was working on his doctorate, we attended some academic dinner function and shared a table with many of his classmates.  The females treated me like his "little wifey" and were oh-so-arrogant.  At the time, I had a librarian job at the same university that carried an academic rank.  So, when it came time to introduce guests, Richard really laid it on thick, introducing me as Director of the Middletown Campus Library and associate professor, a rank that would take his classmates years to attain through the promotion and tenure process, assuming they found full-time professorships at all.

I did always want to get my own Ph.D., so that when someone on the phone asked for Dr. Palmer, I could ask if they meant Mr. Dr. Palmer or Mrs. Dr. Palmer.  However, having seen too many doctorates left unfinished, I decided that I'd rather never start, than start and not finish.

Last week Adam went with me to see Callie's x-rays at the old vet. When I talked to him about it last night, he wasn't surprised at all and said he could easily see that the vet was more interested in making money off of the procedure than actually healing Callie.  I hope that isn't true, but was quite surprised that was his initial impression.

That is very interesting.  Sometimes vets can be excited to do a procedure that is interesting to them.  I sadly fell into this trap once.

One of the reasons I feel very confident with Sherlock’s orthopedist, though surgery on Sherlock would be an interesting and educational procedure, the doctor will not operate when everything is going so well.

I also told DH Richard that the next time we got a doctorate and had a baby in the same year, I'd get the doctorate and he could have the baby.

You can say that again! Because of that stupid system, I get to work 13 hours in a row tonight!

Yes, I know you all sympathise with that and I'm quite grateful for it! :-\ :)

But then, I make so much money that you'd be disgusted if you knew!! :P

what a bummer, i do sympathize with you.  unless you are on an hourly wage i expect you don't get paid extra.  i hope you work when the clocks change again and you get back the extra hour.

In the US, retired (or reserve) officers retain their rank, and the use of their still proper military title is considered a common courtesy - almost always used for "general" officers, and often for those of field grade. We also extend the use of titles to no-longer active folks in government service (Senator, Judge, Ambassador, etc.).

I just remembered Bryan’s fist Halloween in New Jersey.  He was almost three and the young girl across the street offered to take him out for me when it got dark.  I had already taken him out with Craig earlier in the day, along with my other friends who were pushing baby carriages.

She took him for awhile and then back to her house and was going to drop him off before leaving with her brother and the siblings next door.  I was watching out my window as the group of children went down the street with Bryan in tow.  Three hours late, they finally retuned carrying one exhausted little boy home.  He made it to the second step inside before completely crashing.

These kids were all great so I never mentioned my concerns, and how could I complain they found Bryan so irresistible they couldn’t leave him behind.   ;D

Titles - different culture I guess.  I just see anyone in the forces or in the goverment at whatever level as
"workers" just like the rest of us. They have just chosen different occupations. Their titles belong to the work place as it is part of that culture.

And does your Mother refer to him as:
"My Son, the Mister"?
