Finally got my scanner working tonight, so I wanted to see how the reduced size picture would look.

It was raining when I left the Orpheum tonight. It's now below freezing and although not raining is getting pretty slick out there.  We're expecting snow on Thursday and again this weekend.  I think we should be ok tomorrow, but it sounds like it's time to get milk and bread in the morining cause it may get ugly out there again.

Glad I got my ice all chopped and off the driveway today when the temps were in the 40s.  I don't care if we get tons of snow and if it's cold, but god, I hate chopping ice off the driveway and sidewalk.   Curves is going to think I gave up...truth is I've gotten more than a workout just cleaning up outside!

DR DakotaCelt - My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.  Please remember to take care of yourself over the next couple of days.  It was nice hearing that your father went peacefully in his sleep, and that you're already laughing among the tears.

Good Evening!

A friend of mine is auditioning for an agent tomorrow, and he asked me to play for him.  So, today, we ran through some of his music.  One of the selections he'll be singing is "Father To Son" from Falsettos.  It had been a while since I have listened to Falsettos, and I had forgotten just how touching that song is.  And since Chris is a new father, he really gets it - and he really communicates it well too.  Awwwww...

After my coaching session, I headed up to Border's to take advantage of the 40%-off DVD Boxed Sets sale/coupon...  I can't wait to start re-watching the second season of "Saturday Night Live".  :)

Also Sweeney Todd did not run three hours on the stage. The tv version of the stage vesion which had some cuts in the show by the time the video taped it was 2 hrs 19 minutes. Which includes credits so I guess the running time is less. The concert version clocks in at 2hrs 12 minutes.

So with the cutting of all the Ballad of Sweeney Todds. And other songs that don't seem to be on the new cd like  The Barber and His Wife, Wait, Ah Miss, Kiss Me, The Parlor Songs, the wigmaker scene; getting the running time down to under two hours seems possible

As for the "Sweeney Todd" movie...  I'm really excited to see it.  I've been purposely avoiding reading all the early reviews - and, frankly, I'm sort of surprised so many of them are out there already.  I know the movie is going to be a totally different animal, a different experience from the stage musical, and I just want to go in and "let it happen".

I wonder if the academy will reinstate the music adaptation category with the success and some not of musicals. I think the last time it was used was when Victor/Victoria won. Then it went dormat. Although they did have a category for musical score comedy because it seemed Alan Menkan or any of the other Disney composers of animated films were always winnder when they had one category.

...Then after my Border's excursion, I met up with my friend, Michael.  -OH!  This is/was a different Michael, so maybe that's why it seems I'm talking about "Michael" all the time.  Well.. In any case...

Illy had set up a new "display" on the second floor of the Time-Warner Center.  They basically recycled an industrial shipping/storage container into a portable art/living-room/espresso-bar.  So, we lined up for our free sample of espresso, and it turned they were giving out coupons for a free Chocolate Bouchon from the Bouchon Bakery up on the third floor.  Coffee and Chocolate - It's a Good Thing.  :)

I stand corrected. i just checked the last time they had a category with adaptation score as part of a category was in 1983 when Yentl won although it was a song score and its adaptation. the other two nominees were solely adaptation scores. The Sting II & Trading Places,

And since this Michael is a relative newcomer to NYC, I took him on a mini-tour of midtown.  After wending our way along Central Park South and Fifth Avenue, we ended up back on Ninth Avenue at Empanada Mama for dinner.  Muy delicioso!

Re: The Sweeney Todd movie.

According to DR EvilTwin, who saw it Sunday with Christine Pedi, there are no choral numbers whatsoever.  Christopher Lee was contracted to be one of those "ghosts," as they were in the original shooting script, but, he never even got onto the set.

Then after dinner, Michael headed back home, and I raced back over to Carnegie Hall.  While we were walking around earlier, I noticed that Valery Gergiev was conducting his Kirov Orchestra tonight, and that the concert was opening with Stravinsky's "Les Noces" (The Wedding).  I've always been intrigued by "Les Noces" due to its instrumentation:  besides four vocal soloists, the "orchestra" consists of various percussion instruments and four(!) pianos.  I have a few recordings of the piece, but I've never seen or heard it performed live.  Well...  When I got to the box office - right around 7:59! - they still had a couple of decent cheap-ish balcony seats left, so I bought myself a ticket, then head up the stairs(!) to the balcony to get settling into my seat.

What a very interesting - and I mean that in a good way - performance.  "Les Noces" is based on rustic, folk Wedding Rituals.  It is not "pretty" music.  There is no lushness to the score.  However, the folk origins of the music are always in evidence.  And to my ears, it sounded like the soloists were instructed to color their voices toward the "raw" side of their vocal palate, very earthy.  It worked for me - although, I suspected some people around me were hoping for some more beautiful singing.  Well, since the second half of the concert consisted of the second act of Borodin's "Prince Igor", they had plenty of "beautiful singing" to look forward to.

I almost left after "Les Noces" since that's all I really wanted to hear, but since that would have made for a rather short (25 minutes) concert experience, I stayed for the second half.  And I'm glad I did.

Valery Gergiev and his Kirov Orchestra are known for their virtuosic performances, with plenty of touches of "Russian abandon and passion" when called for.  Well, they did not disappoint in that respect tonight.  The second act of "Prince Igor" is the source of the popular "Polovtsian Dances" - which would later be re-fashioned for the musical, Kismet.  The Dance sections were lush, rich and exciting, and in some of the rowdier numbers, literally ground-shaking and hair-raising.  You could just sense the audience wanting to burst into applause as the last dance built to it's final notes.

The vocal soloists for Prince Igor were all impressive, however, I would have to give the soprano and tenor the vocal honors for the evening.  I was also impressed with the clarinet player who was featured quite a bit.  How he kept up with some of Maestro Gergiev's "racier" tempos was a wonder to hear.

I made it home just in time to catch the season premiere of "The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency".

While I'm not a coloratura whose husband took French leave with the payroll, I think I could probably find work in a kitchen watching dishes or something.

Is that the plot to the sequel of "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat"?

In lieu of potato latkes tonight, Skip made some delicious gnocchi.  I have trouble seeing this or any potato dish as a main course, so i just treated it as a very elaborate and tasty side dish.
