TOD:

Books:

Something From the Oven, by Laura Shapiro.  An interesting history of the 1950s, focusing on the intersection of commercially produced food and the common housewife's desire to put real food on the table for their families.  As a result of the collision, modern feminism came about.  Did you know that just eight days after Julia Child first appeared on Boston television as The French Chef, Betty Furness' The Feminine Mystique was released to bookstores?  'Tis true!  And the two works are not as opposed to each other as everyone first guesses!

You can imagine the dinner-table conversation!

And my last name being "Winkworth," I suffered a lot as a child due to this cartoon:

Although the idea of encouraging children to draw on their parent's television screens with crayon always did give me a perverse jolt of pleasure...   ;)

Ben - I suffered a bit when I was a kid because of that song "Do The Freddy,"

You should have had T-Shirts make up that said:

I'M FREDDY

DO ME!

Good morning, good day, how are you this beautiful day.  I slept fitfully, and it took me at least an hour to fall asleep - too many book thoughts rolling around in Ye Olde Cranium.   I kept making bedside notes - finally fell asleep around three, I think, and then had odd dreams again, some of which, I think (they faded really fast this morning) were book plot related.

But this ditty evened the score:

There was a fey lad from town Yonkers
Answered to the name of Winkworth
When the guys in the gym compared Wonkers
They looked at his winky and went Zonkers
For it had grand length and great girth

RE: LOST

It starts in 2 weeks (on thursday).

It looks like it will be 2 hours.

First a one hour new special at 8pm. Followed by a new episode at 9pm.

I think that first one hour episode might help remind us of what happened so far.

I wish they would show the last episode or two from last season. I'm not really sure why they don't. The show is so confusing.  Anyhow i guess that is probably why they are showing the special at 8pm.

I'll probably just re-read the televisionwithoutpity recaps to remind myself of everything that happened.

Friday morning (CST) greetings!  This week of role reversal has been quite refreshing for me.  Instead of getting up and leaving the house at the crack of dawn while DH Richard snoozes, I'm the one sleeping in while he's out of the apartment by 7:30 or so.  We have a TV that only gets a couple of stations (one of which is in Spanish), but we get the Milwaukee NBC affiliate, so I've been able to enjoy the Today Show while having my breakfast.  There's also a local morning talk show called The Morning Blend that reminds me of the local programming we used to have in Detroit and Cincinnati.

Happiest of birthdays to DR Charles Pogue!  How 'bout some Graeter's ice cream and something from Busken Bakery?

Thanks for the anniversary wishes from DRs Edi, TCB, George, Laura, JRand, JMK, and Jose that I found when catching up on last night's posts.

After Evening Prayer and Richard's singing rehearsal with the choir scholars, we drove one of his classmates to the Milwaukee airport, where he was going to rent a car and meet his wife and daughter who were flying in from Florida (boy, are they in for a temperature shock!).  We got back to campus in time for the social that several classmates had arranged and the entire group sang us an anniversary song when we arrived.

Thanks, too, to all the DRs who acknowledged my 7000-post milestone.

As for the Topic of Yesterday...

The music of Leroy Anderson always bring a smile to my face.

In general, the label of "light classical" has always sort of confused me, since it seems that all composers seem to write both "light" and "heavy" pieces.  Then with the way record companies package and re-package Classical Music's Greatest Hits, "light" could be:

-a piece in a slow tempo
-anything written by Mozart
-almost anything from a ballet
-any music used in a movie
-any piece in a major ("happy") key
-etc., etc, etc.

I'm reminded of Duke Ellington's quote about music, in general: "There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind.”

And in a similar vein, I've also always enjoyed this Duke Ellington quote:

"There are two kinds of worries - those you can do something about and those you can't. Don't spend any time on the latter."

'bout time to meet DH Richard and the other seminarians for lunch.  Afterward, I might venture into town (Delafield) for some shopping.

HA!

Right before I clicked on the link, I wondered if the Hotel Carter had made the list.  And, lo and behold, it was at the top of the list!  The Hotel Carter is rather infamous for a lot of things, many infamous things, and, for some unexplained reason, it still manages to stay open month after month, inspection after inspection, shooting after shooting, etc. after etc.

I went home for lunch which is my usual behavior. We ate our chicken noodle soup with crackers. We each had a clementine and then Anthony went back to the craft project and I began to sort the laundry for this evening washing party.

The buzzer rang. It was Fed Ex. They had TWO packages. One we were expecting, our memory modules but there was a box, about the size of the box which wa delivered yesterday which contained our new, working, 160gig hard drive.

I signed for both the envelope and the box but was confused. I opened the envelope and it contained the memory and this time it's the right product. I didn't want to open the box but I looked at all my paperwork and none of the purchase orders matched what was written on the box. We weren't expecting anything else and knowing that when we called Gateway we would need to say what was in the box, I opened it. Yes, it is a SECOND 160gig hard drive. It's exactly the same as the drive delivered yesterday. I can't imagine what is going on at Gateway that they could be so disorganized. We now have to call Gateway AGAIN and get a return authorization and make sure that my credit card is not charged for 2 hard drives. We then have to go back to FedEx to set in motion the return of this package. Gateway is spending a fortune on returns. They pick up the cost of the FedEx return because it's their error. So far we have returned one 500gig hard drive and two memory modules (each in a separate package with separate charges). Now comes the 3rd package. This has entered a whole new realm of silly.

All I can say is, at least my computer works.

Oy!
