Today I begin the big project that I've been dreading just a bit - THE LAST EMPEROR. I wish I liked the movie more. It's grand and sweeping, but it's a cold epic, at least that was my initial reaction all those years ago when it was released. I've never watched it since.

There are at least four feature-length documentaries also in this big box, so I'll have my hands full with it for the next several days (taking time out for favorite TV shows, of course!)

Monday morning greetings!  It's my day off and I've already been to the dentist for my 6-month check-up and cleaning (Look, Ma, no cavities!).  Richard and I are going out to my mom's for dinner and to a concert there at her retirement community by the Miami University Men's Glee Club.  Wonder if Richard will go up to sing when they invite alumni?

I saw this movie opening weekend in a theater whose audience was 98% African-American, and they were rapturous with every song and production number. I thought the roof was coming off the theater with "No Bad News," and Horne's "If You Believe" and Ross' "Home" got STANDING OVATIONS! I just sat still and cringed at how deadly the film was paced.

This was exactly MY experience, DR MATTH....I guess I was watching a different movie than the rest of the audience.

I have to say when I saw how bad this was and how poorly it did at the box-office, I truly believed film musicals (except for an occasional Fosse movie or Broadway adaptation) were over.

Getting the rhythms down and the entrances of the "Bobby/Baby" stuff in that opening number right were some of the most difficult things I ever did in theater. (Learning my harmony part for "Cabaret" in AND THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND was another.)

A little pre-Wiz (hmmm, how unseemly) Charlie Smalls trivia:  One of Portland's jazz legends is vocalist Nancy King, who regaled me with this story:  she was part of a band that was briefly signed by A&M, called Charlie Smalls & Company.   They had one single (whose name I can't recall right now, I want to say "Sunflower" or "Sunbird" or something like that) that evidently charted quite high in L.A., but not nationally.  They never finished recording a complete album because Charlie (this is according to Nancy) made off with the advance and went to little ol' NYC, where he wrote The Wiz.

Happy President's Day to all of our favorite presidents!

Around our house, we celebrate it as Uncle Milly Day. Millard Fillmore is a great-great-great-great-great-great uncle of DR Sandra on her dad's side of the family.

Interestingly, our very own DR Megan can also celebrate Uncle Milly Day - he is her great-great-great-great-great-great uncle on her mother's side of the family.

Nice planetary actions this week, with Uranus being unusually quiet and inactive.

The week begins with Mercury turning direct on February 18, offering confidence about the future. Later the same day, the Sun enters the dream-seeker sign of Pisces, urging you to tune in to your goals. The Virgo lunar eclipse on February 20 brings an emotional emphasis to your self-care plan, while the Sun opposite Saturn on February 24 prompts you to stand back and take a realistic look at where you are and where you're headed.

Uncle Milly's greatest achievement is having the first bathtub with running water installed in the White House.

And his descendents in Arizona succeeded in moving it back out into the backyard!   ;)
