DR Jane - Sometimes those "by phone" estimates can work in the mover's favor.  I remember when Steve moved a couple of years ago, he was moving from one apartment to his new condo.  They based his rate on the number of rooms he had in his old place.  Of course, what they didn't count on was the fact that he quite the library of books, sheet music and recordings.  The moving company honored their estimate, but even one of the guys on the crew said they probably would have charged him more had they done a in-person, on-site estimate.  -I think on-site estimates are truly the exception now rather than the rule.

Dear Readers,

Do you have any two-dollar bills you would be willing to part with? I am collecting them for a little project I'm working on. Anybody who sends me one will receive a sparkling prize (a hand-drawn picture by Mae-Ling or Wae-Ling Goldstein), as well as two one-dollar bills with witticisms written on them.

P.M. me for my address.

Are banks no longer giving them out anymore?  -My father still gets some every now and then to give to his grandkids. (I think.)

Banks get them every once in a while. I buy up as many as I can. I usually get them one or two at a time.

It is shocking what a difficult time Bryan is having getting an on-site estimate from a moving company.  They all seem to want to do it by phone.

Question number 1 “how many rooms do you have”.  He lives in a one room loft.

Next they begin to figure in appliances-he isn’t taking any.

JMK or MBarnum, do you know anyone who has moved cross country & can recommend a good moving company?

His boxes should arrive tomorrow and he can begin packing.  Sure hope nothing happens between now and closing, the place is no longer fit to show.

When der B and I moved cross country, we didn't really use a moving company.

Instead, we packed everything into the trailer, which was then driven for us cross country by a company that does that kind of stuff, and when they dropped off our trailer, we unloaded it again.

Turned out, this was much cheaper than a "moving company" would have been.

Cilla, our best experiences were with NorthAmerican.  We also learned all offices are not created equal so it is best to find out which moving companies rate best in your own area-a very difficult task indeed.  When it comes to placing claims on damaged or lost goods, all moving companies that I dealt with made it very difficult.

SWW, interesting concept.  Will that work if you need the contents stored for two or more months?

It is definitely broken. No question about that. My computer had a hard time loading the page.

DR TCB, the role of Herbie has historically been a featured role. Jack Klugman and John Dossett both were nominated for Tonys as featured actors for GYPSY.

I finished watching the bonus features on THE LOVERS DVD set. Not really much extra value on this Criterion, but this is a "budget release," $10 less than their usual suggested retail price.

Next I watched another PSYCH episode. This was the one where Shawn and Gus investigate the world of speed dating. Funny episode and a good mystery.

SWW, interesting concept to reduce the moving costs.  Will that work if you need the contents stored for two or more months?  Do you have more info I can share with Bryan?

DR Jose, that kind of estimate would have worked for us

Bryan is in the process of reducing the volume and weight of his belongings.  He would like at least one on site estimate.

He did an on-line estimate-big mistake as now every broker around is calling him, even at 7:00 AM on a Saturday.  The on-line estimate included a $600 + fee to guarantee the price.

Bryan is moving from Portland, most likely to North Chicago
