Question for DR MattH

Technically how many episodes of a series like MASH (1/2 hour program less commericials)  and LOST (1 hour less commecials) can actually fit on a single Blu Ray Disc?

I know that Lost places about 4 (?) episodes per disc. But could they place more?

Good morning!

It rained this morning for a couple of hours, a slow steady rain which will make mowing the groass today impossible. Maybe tomorrow or Tuesday, both of which are suspoosed to be rain free.

Actually, the Blu-ray of LOST, Season 3 placed five episodes per disc. (The sDVD placed four and the set had one more disc than the Blu-ray had).

I think the number of episodes per disc would be determined by how much compression and which compression scheme (MPEG-2, VC-1, AVC) the manufacturers wanted to use to put the episodes on the disc.

Disney wanted the Blu-rays of LOST to astound (and they did with better resolution at 1080p and even more striking image depth and clarity than the broadcast versions which are done in 720p) so I suspect that's why only five episodes are on a disc.

As to how many could theoretically fit, I really don't know. I had read that a typical season of a comedy show could fit on one or two discs, but I only have LOST to go by. I don't own any other TV shows on Blu-ray.

In answer to DR DakotaCelt's question from last night:

Yes, you will need an antenna to use with a new HDTV. It doesn't have to be one of those fancy HDTV antennas that stores like Best Buy want to sell you. A $10 set of rabbit ears from Target do my sets just fine.

I finally finished with NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS. I didn't like it as much as the first one though it's much bigger in every way, and they've brought Helen Mirren into it as Nic Cage's mother.

I enjoyed the commentary with the director and Jon Voight much more than the one on the previous movie with the director and Justin Bartha.

Today, I'll watch Thursday night's 30 ROCK and THE OFFICE while I cook and eat lunch.

Then, I'll be starting on season six of J.A.G. which I'm looking forward to since I enjoyed the season 5 set so much. I never watched the show when it aired on broadcast television, so I'm playing catch-up (ketchup?) now.

I agree that it is not as good as the first one - but it was still a fun ride for a Saturday afternoon!

Which poses an interesting marketing question - if you are marketing box-sets of full seasons I suspect whether you have a 7 disc set or a 5 disc set makes little difference in marketing terms.

Hypothetically, if you could put a single season on a 6 disk set, and by some magic, put four seasons on a 6 disk set; would you market the latter for much less than the price of the 6 disk set of one season? I suspect not. I imagine the marketing models will place emphasis on $/hour, not on $/disc.

As someone who give gifts of DVD sets from time to time, I will say this about that:  It seems that the more DVD's in the set, the better (actually, more substantial) the present is regarded.  So from perspective of gift-giving, more discs is better than fewer discs with the same amount of viewing time.

For purposes of reviewing the set, I had to watch the movie three times, and I agree that it grew on me. I liked it better after the second and third time around. I'm glad I have the Blu-ray, and I'll be hanging on to it to watch again (but not soon unless a friend wants to stop by to see it).

Very nice review by Suskin.  And I had about six orders waiting for me this morning, so maybe this will help get us even closer to being sold out.

Good morning and Happy Mother's Day!

I finished up the garden tour this morning---2 other homes---with our gardening show producer. All of the gardens were very inspiring (even the "checkbook gardens").

I'm kind of tired because I was up from about 205 watching the weather, stashing a car to protect it from the golball-sized hail that was predicted, and getting ready to move the cats to the basement if a tornado or high winds arrived. Fortunately, the storm went south of us, and we were once again spared...not even a tree limb down! Whew!

Even though Bretty hasn't been with us lately, I spied him today on YouTube!

He attended the wedding of the daughter of a friend of ours in LA. It sounds like it was a beautiful wedding. I've only met the bride and groom once, when they came to our film out in LA, but they're a wonderful couple and we're very happy for them.

Bretty was inspired to set his impressions to music:

It's very a sweet and touching memento!

Hi Folks and a very Happy Mothers day.

I wasn't on yesterday because I was quite busy.

It seems that sometimes things converge and take matters out of our hands.

Last week, my cable box starting messing up as you all well know.  Well, on Friday, I got the gift from my uncle.  That and the money I got from work made a nice sum.

After some thought as to what to do with the money, I thought what better use to put it to then to not just change out the cable box but to change it to an HD box.  That meant I needed both a HD TV and a new stand for it.

I was able to get both.  I found a Sony 32” on sale at Best Buy and I got the stand at Walmart.  Brighthouse is at the mall so I was also able to exchange the old box for the new HD box.  The guy told me that the old box was an old box and I never should have received it.  He said it was going to go straight into the trash.

Then came the struggle to get the old tube set and TV stand out of the house.

In trying to get the old set down, it slipped and fell on my left foot.  I don’t think anything broken but I must say I danced quite a jig and said some rather choice words.  My entire foot is black and blue now and is quite sore.

I managed to get the old set out to the curb then came the wrestling match to get the old stand out.  It fell apart when I got it about half way.  That was both good and bad.  It made it easier to get the pieces to the curb.

Next I had to struggle to get the box with the new stand into the house and get it assembled.  Well, that was a gas and took longer then I thought.  It was nine o’clock last night before I was finished and I was so tired and my foot hurt so bad that I just went to bed.

When I got up today, I finished with unboxing the new TV.  It was harder then you would think to get it out of the box because I’m so short.  I thought I was going to have to cut the front of the box to get to it.

I had not problem figuring out to attach the DVD player and the cable box.  The picture is, of course, wonderful!  The 32” size is perfect for my small living room.

So there is the agony and the ecstasy of getting my new TV.
I’m just taking the day to relax my foot and enjoy my new set.
