Larry, I hope you have a better day today.  Looking forward to hearing about the book signing last night.

Perhaps you are not in a position to turn down work, but I wonder if the stress and dissatisfaction of projects such as this one is worth the bother...

DRMBARNUM will be very happy to read of one of the nominees in the Best Leading Actor in a Musical category.

My favorite category as listed right now is:

BEST ORCHESTATIONS - whatever that is.

Good morning, all! Last night was not a good evening for me. Not only did I miss Marc Acito's reading because I felt I should be attending the band rehearsal for which I had done a bit of frustrating work, I never heard two of the pieces, both of which I knew had problems. I had taken along my work kit of manuscript paper, scissors, tape, white-out, pens and ruler to make any fixes to do repairs, but the musical director - for this concert this weekend in New Jersey - had the band playing on every number besides the 10 I had done. Because of finances being tight, they had one band rehearsal with the Chorus, and not enough time to read everything.

As a result, the first half of rehearsal was to play the beginnings and ends of the pieces before the Chorus members arrived and then run it complete with the Chorus. On the one piece, the MD said something along the lines of "should we fix it now?" and since I thought one minute of dialogue would fix it or at least tell me what to fo after the band left, I said he should do it now.  Instead he went on to an African thing he'd arranged and spent perhaps 5-10 minutes on it.  With the next one, which was my other problematic piece, he played the 4-bar opening and the end. The band left and so did I.

I do not like having work credited to me aired publicly without hearing it; it happens more than I like, but if I'm going to kicked for my work, I like to know it's as good as I can make it. This whole job for the Chorus was very frustrating, and not to get through it all at a rehearsal was a major issue for me. I'll never hear the pieces so I basically told the MD and accompanist where I anticipated the problems and left. Other frustrating things about the evening:
  1. I turned over the band parts with my scores to the MD two weeks ago, so I had nothing with me, and I believed when I have the to him that he was going to transfer all the information into his scores. It was a good assumption but nothing was done. Even more frustrating, my scores weren't in evidence so I had nothing to use at rehearsal.
  2. At the break when the band left, the band was given a big round of applause, which they deserved, but I was never acknowledged in any way, shape, or form.  It's a small thing, but the Chorus turnover is large, and I would guess that about half of the members neither know who I am or what I was there for, and it only added to my feelings of pissing in the wind for nothing.

Today, laundry, NYPL, Victor Herbert

I know Rondi Reed!!! After we saw the show, my friend David and I spoke to her for about a half hour. I worked with her in Minnesota. We did a production of You Can't Take it With You.

How exciting for Rondi!

I know there are fans of the show here but Xandu as best musical??? Please! I don't often express negative views publicly but what a joke. I'm appalled that of EVERYTHING that opened on Broadway this year, this minor joke of a show is nominated for best musical. The only good thing about it is that it probably WON'T win. My fingers are crossed for that. I'd rather see Cry Baby win over Xanadu.

Ben - Hmmm...we disagree about XANADU.  I thought it was a tremendously tough show to pull off, and had potential to be a disaster of schleppic proportions, and I think it deserves its Book and Musical nominations.

Feeling good for Glenn Slater and Alan Menken:  LITTLE MERMAID apparently did the right thing for its score by taking so much care with its cast album, which got the new songs some strong positive response that to some degree unfairly eluded them when the show opened.

TOD - On the last morning of our honeymoon, Richard and I ate breakfast in the hotel dining room before going to our Saturday class at Miami University.  About halfway through class, I became violently ill and he took me to the ER.  It was determined that the sausage gravy had been "off" and had made me sick.  I haven't eaten it since.

The funniest thing that happened in the ER was when the doctor (who looked about 12 years old) asked if I could be pregnant.  I said, "I've only been married a week!"

I take umbrage to today's WOD....oh, never mind.

Good news:  I started Thief of Bagdad last night, listening to the Scorcese/Coppola commentary.  Coppola sings, repeatedly, which proves why One From the Heart was such a disaster.  ;)

Bad news:  I got nailed by a photo radar van driving home from a gig.  I don't think I was much over the speed limit, but it still makes me mad.

I loved it!  The case was interesting. But i am still curious. Did the husband's father plant that crying machine in the attic? Did he kill his "daughter"?  Or did she kill herself?  And did she write that note???  I was surprised that kelly preston's character was married and had planned the whole thing. I knew she was not to be trusted. But this just did not occur to me. But i liked how joe got $250K and the job at the end. I found it unrealistic that he would have been out of work for so long given the kind of work he did. But more than that i found it unrealistic because he should never have lost his job in his first place (or the 2nd job he got and that his original company bought that company). ANd i thought he should have gotten a settlement or sued over that hostage situation.  I was also so glad to see Devalis (sp?) back in charge and alison having her job back. What a great season finale!

I was surprised A CATERED AFFAIR didn't get more recognition in the big three categories. At least some of the cast got nominated.

And I was thrilled to see Bobby Cannavale among the featured actor/play nominees.
