The past couple of weeks have been amazingly pleasant and cool, especially after the 10 days of heat we had just prior.

Spring has sprung at 2917 MacArthur, and this is what's on my balcony right now:

This pink geranium is in a large pot and gets full western exposure.  In essence, it's in sunlight from noon until the sun sets.  It's also in the path of any cold winds that blow when it's not hot.  Note the discoloration of the leaves (rings, of a sort) that indicate the plant is tolerant of, if not happy about, its placement in the world.  It still provides me an amazing burst of color nearly year-round.

Spring at 2917 MacArthur (continued):

This red geranium (truly, it IS red) is more protected from the elements and has come a long way from nearly dying a couple of years back.  It and the pink were part of a tray of geraniums I got in 1996.  Note the leaves, though:  They are green and healthy -- not complaining about a thing, actually as they get some protection from a scraggly Norfolk Island pine (that used to do beautifully in the shade next to my front door but which the HOA asked me to remove as a hindrance to potential firefighting operations [!!!] and it's now struggling in full sunlight) and from being on the floor of my balcony.

Spring at 2917 MacArthur (continued):

Here is one of my favorite things -- a Star Jasmine I bought circa 1998.  It was a small plant then, and because it's in a pot, remains smaller than it would be by now had it been planted in ground.  But it's lush and healthy and has started to bloom!

In my kitchen, just above my sink and benefitting from a skylight, is my African violet, born from a cut leaf off one of my boss's plants back in 1996.

DR elmore3003, have you seen the following blurb for this forthcoming book?  Heck, perhaps you're in it!

The Sound of Broadway Music: A Book of Orchestrators and Orchestrations  (Oxford Univ Press - Hardcover Book)  By Steven Suskin.   Examines the careers of Broadway's major orchestrators and follows the song as it travels from the composer's piano to the orchestra pit. Suskin has meticulously tracked down thousands of original orchestral scores, piecing together enigmatic notes and notations with long-forgotten documents and current interviews with dozens of composers, producers, conductors and arrangers. Three main parts: a biographical section which gives a sense of the life and world of twelve major theatre orchestrators, as well as incorporating briefer sections on another thirty arrangers and conductors; a lively discussion of the art of orchestration, written for musical theatre enthusiasts (including those who do not read music); a biographical section which gives a sense of the life and world of twelve major theatre orchestrators, as well as incorporating briefer sections on another thirty arrangers and conductors; and an impressive show-by-show listing of more than six hundred musicals, in many cases including a song-by-song listing of precisely who orchestrated what along with relevant comments from people involved with the productions. Intriguing facts and juicy anecdotes, many of which have never before appeared in print.

DR singdaw, what I did not know was that its publication date was announced, sothank you for posting this.  I just ordered it.

I'm having a bit of dinner, then I shall work until 7 on the Brain. Then, I'm off to the theatuh.

I divided the African violet for the first time in 2001, or so, and gave the remaining half to a co-worker.  It struggled valiantly for a while and gave up the ghost about two years ago.  Two years ago, I needed to do another division, but was determined to keep it alive.  Until two weeks ago, this divided "junior" plant never bloomed.  But surprise! Surprise!  Little buds appeared and have recently opened.  What they revealed is wonderful to me.  Note that the petals on junior have pronounced white ridges on the petals.  The mother plant has only a faint white ridge.  Indeed, "Jr." also has a prominent vibrant yellow "center", while the mother plant's is less prominent or showy.

Has anyone already posted the link to Tom Nondorf's new Leading Men column?

If so, here it is again:

http://www.playbill.com/news/article/118326.html

I just chatted with Mr. Nondorf today via the telephonic device and he informed me of such...but I had not yet looked.

Very nice flower photos DR RLP!

Once I replace my lost camera (which I will do today, since I need one for my trip) I will snap some photos of the flora and fauna in my back yard.

And if it ever stops raining here, I will finish my to be back -porch and snap a photo of it also.

I have some "late" tulips bursting out of a pot on my balcony and will offer photos once budding/blooming starts.

And another "favorite" thing on my balcony is a potted Angel's Trumpet.   I rooted this six years ago.  Last year, for the first time, it started blooming and bloomed continually through spring, summer and fall.  It only has a few blooms at a time, at most.  Were it in the ground, it would be gi-normous and be covered with blooms most of the time.

Finished with the writing and am now heading back down to finish up the HAWAII FIVE-O I had started and then go on to some more episodes. At 10, I plan to watch THE MOLE form last night off the DVR.

I've taken a picture for the report I'm rushing to get ready.  It's not a pretty sight, so you may wish to skip on by this one:

Well I fixed the garbage disposal when i got home. I got a hex wrench, but couldn't get it to turn so I reached in one more time and discovered a potato nail (the aluminum nails you put in a potato to make it bake faster) was jammed in the thing.  I got it out and it works but is now making a funny sound. I think maybe it bent one of the teeth or something.  At least it works.

I am very interested in the primary election in Union County South Dakota.  They are voting on a zoning change that would allow Hyperion to build a gas refinery near Elk Point, SD - about 25 miles north west of here.   they claim it's a green plant, but I'm not sure about that and am worried about the ecological impact. On the other hand, it would bring in tons of jobs and that's something we could use around here.

OK, the car needs gas, the garbage needs to go out (I was able to fix the garbage can that they claimed put me "in violation" even though the garbage men broke it) the yard waste needs to go to the street and I need to cut up some boxes for curb side recycling.

According to Playbill, the revival of A Chorus Line will close in August.  So much for Mr. Lopez's drawing power - grosses are pretty low for the last few weeks, barely above 50%

I will shortly go pick up my new Xerox copies of my galley, one of which will go off to a blurb-person (the other blurb-person gets a pdf - reads on the computer).  Then I'll have to figure out what dinner will be.  I'm trying to be good these days, although I find it difficult.

I also reprogramed the NOAA weather radio in my room so that it only goes off for my county.  Maybe I'll be able to get some sleep

We are supposed to have storms again. I hate that on a garbage night. I never know whether to put my garbage out and risk having it strewn all over the neighborhood or to leave it in the garage and risk not getting up early enough to put ot on the curb.

I wonder, though, if tourism is down due to increased prices for airlines and bus tickets.  I thought about buying my airline tickets for my December pilgrimage to South Carolina.  At present, they're $700 more than they were last fall.

Still, if the other shows are doing well enough to keep going, I'm guessing there's not much interest in the old "Line" sufficient to keep it going indefinitely.

A road company of it will be in San Francisco this month for about 4-6 weeks.  I may go again.

Today I bought an Ipod so I can drown out all the sounds that cause me to stop and look at things when I walk.

I have no idea what to do with it now.

You might reconsider using it as a noise-killer on your walks.

You might miss a warning rattle!

Or a horn...!
