elmore, I, too miss the Brain in Manhattan.  However, I certainly don't miss Paul Downs Colaizzo in any way, shape, or form.  I'm afraid he is on my "F" list for reasons too many to go into.  Our current Rod is the best we've had.  He'll be reading the role of George Brenner in Nudie.

Well, i know some of the reasons through gossip and others I don't. Nor want to. I only know that I liked the NYMF cast a lot and I miss the show.

Whilst browing in the local "special foods" emporium, I came upon a travelling anvil candy saleman; he was touting product from Oregon:

MOONSTRUCK CHOCOLATE

Best damn truffle I ever ate.

Do you Pac NW folks know much about them?

der Brucer

I've never heard of these, but they sure do look good! :D

I have laid off this creep for years, but when he bashed me over at Broadwayworld, and then did so repeatedly in every thread he could, that was it.  Slander, indeed.  This guy is, in MY opinion, one of the biggest jerks who ever lived.  Oh, the stories I could tell - and they are plentiful.  I'm sure elmore could match me, too.

What was his general greeting? "Hi, Doll?" or "I'm doing a recording, work on it now, and I'll pay you when it's released , if ever." Yep, too many stories.  Nearly thirty years worth! I know a Tony-winning orchestrator and conductor who has good stories, too.

I have to schlep down to Allen Street on the lower east side for this CD release party.  Much as I look forward to it, I don't really want to leave the apartment. But I must.

BK, thanks for the package!

I did discover this grade school photo of DR Chopsticks that I felt was important to today's title.

Is it located right next to "The Mine Shaft"?

And when did you ever go to the Mine Shaft?

I just got the new bio of actress Coral Browne, who was truly what the French would call formidable.  She and gay companion Charles Gray (of Rocky Horror) were in the opening night of Peter Brook's production of Seneca's version of Oedipus with Sir John Gielgud and Irene Worth at the Old Vic. At the end of the play, a dixieland band played "Yes, We Have No Bananas" as a 15-foot tall golden phallus was brought onstage. While the audience sat stunned, Coral whispered to her friend loudly enough for everyone to hear, "Its no one we know."

Wasn't she married to Vincent Price?

I don't think we've ever discussed it here.  In any case... Some of the faces do look familiar to me.

Trust me, you'd be better off stage-dooring at the St. James.  With the way the stage is set up for Gypsy, you really don't see much of anything or anyone while you're in the public areas backstage.  Basically, all you'd see is one long hallway, one stairwell, and another hallway.  I always have a better time waiting at the stage door for friends, rather than going inside.

I actually like the stage door at the St. James.  Of course if Patti is insisting on police barricades like for MASTER CLASS it might not be as nice.

I not only watched a TV trailer, I rewound the DVR twice to see it over again:

THE CLOSER (shot in NYC I presume) - "Everybody has something to confess"!

Really fun.

Must be Amy.

C'est moi, c'est moi (I'm forced to admit).

Glad you liked it! We got a lot of mileage out of that footage. There are also versions I did which are running in Regal/AMC right now, beofre INDIANA JONES.

And I do believe I got spritzed a couple of times.  ;D

That was a danger if you sat in the front few rows of the Atlanta Symphony when Robert Shaw was conducting. Great conductor, but the man could sweat up a storm!

I know---but it has enough fans to be renewed. (I'm not one...shhhhhh....)

I believe so, based on an old skit where someone imperosnated Vincent Price and would always refer to "My wife---the actress Coral Brown."

Always, "Hi, doll."  And, the thing is, he bashed me by NAME, didn't even try to be subtle.  So, I suppose we could do the same here, but it's almost more fun this way.

My favorite chocolates come from Walpole, New Hampshire--home of Ken Burns. He and Burdick are the two main cottage industries in town!

Good Evening!

So... I went ahead and headed down to the Virgin Megastore to see my friend at the "Annie - 30th Anniversary Production" recording singing.  -Or something like that.  There were a lot of familiar face behind the ropes - or whatever you call those retractable "barriers".  Kathie Lee Gifford, Andrea McArdle, Conrad John Shuck, Shelly Burch, Martin Charnin, Thomas Meehan, etc.  Alas, it didn't seem that there were that many people in front of the ropes.  However, since there were at any given time, eight to ten people signing and posing for pictures, the line didn't move all that fast.

I did bring my CD with me, but I didn't feel like waiting in line to get it signed.  Instead, I spent some good catch up time with my friend who appears on the recording.  I also let him look at my CD since none of the ensemble members had received copies of the CD (yet?).  He got a kick out of some of the comic-book style renderings of himself and his castmates in the liner notes.

A 24-hour Dunkin' Donuts just opened near my apartment - it's actually just a 30-second walk away.  I was in the mood for something cold and caffeinated, so I decided to give the new location a try and ordered one of their Coffee Coolatas.  Well, I think the staff still has some things to learn about the products they have to make.

When I was handed the cup, it looked awfully dark, but it was icy and slushy.  I took a sip... YOW!  I realized that they had left out the cream and/or milk, so all I was drinking was the frozen coffee base!  It was like drinking quadruple-brewed-strength espresso.  -Even my stomach immediately seized up for a second.  I would have turned around and asked for another, but I sort of figured it wasn't worth the bother.  And the two sips I had before I dumped the rest in the sink most definitely fulfilled my caffeine requirement for this time of day.

Alas, police barricades are more the norm for all stage doors right now.  There are just too many (rabid) fans out there now, as well as one too many "confused" fans.  One does not need to be a Diva to be admired and/or followed and/or stalked.

I suppose that is true, but when there is not a single fan (rabid or otherwise) anywhere in sight waiting to meet Ms. LuPone, it did seem to be a bit of overkill (pardon that expression).

Here's the closing paragraph from a music review that appeared in today's NY Times...

Tracing the Arc of Beethoven’s Career in One Night

Quote
Beethoven institutes are a lovely idea, and no doubt Mannes’s students learn a lot. But what the school should offer is master classes in concert etiquette. At a moment in the G minor Sonata when Mr. Sauer was artfully demonstrating how dramatic the silence between chords can be, a cellphone rang. And in my immediate vicinity, no fewer than three institute students checked and responded to text messages during the performance; each, in fact, waited until the music had begun to illuminate her cellphone.

-I wonder if the folks at Mannes will be posting a copy of this in LARGE PRINT on the student bulletin boards. ;)

I am fascinated by this stage door business.  This has only been happening for the last few years, this rabid stage door crap with mostly crazed teenies.  I mean, six years ago there wasn't anything like this EVER and I mean for the biggest stars.  I think, once again, these awful chat boards can share at least some of the blame, where these little children congregate and talk about who they met, who they took their picture with, whose autograph they got - it feeds on itself and now it's the "thing to do."

It's all on a timetable - and partially unionized now.  They go up no later than a half hour before the curtain comes down, and are not taken down until the stage door man gives the all clear... Regardless of whether or not anyone is waiting.
