I forget if it was mentioned last night during the broadcast, but after checking the IBDB, I realized that yesterday was also the "birthday" of Robert Russell Bennett.

Happy Monday - the day after the Tony Awards.  We had our 4th Annual Tony Party last night and it was a big success.  We played some games, everyone brought "themed" food and we watched the show.  Good times.  If I can pull it together, I'll post what the food items were sometime today or tomorrow.

Does anyone know why Cry Baby doesn't have a recording or one that is scheduled in the future?

It's a kind of Six Degrees of Separation Day here at HHW. Not only did Pogue work with Deanna Dunagan, I worked with Tony Winner Miss Rondi Reed in Saint Paul in 1979 in a production of You Can't Take it With You. We did a slight bit of casting wizardry and made Rheba and Donald (the black servants) Eastern European and Irish white people. The production was directed by Charles Nolte who played Billy Budd on Broadway in 1951.

NEW ARRIVALS!

About a week ago, der B forwarded an email to me that he'd received from Jessica's Biscuit.  (He gets the emails, because he does all the ordering.  Otherwise, none of my earnings would go to anything else, like paying for food, or the rent.   ::))

This particular email was about a clearance they were holding on a few books they'd overstocked, bringing their discount up to 50%.  It was a short-term sale, just for a few days.  So of course I went over their short-term sale short list, and found three books that I would indeed enjoy having in my collection.  Plus one freebie.

Our postman (who looks very nice in shorts) just made the delivery.  Yum!

No food porn this time.  (Food porn is photography of food, specially lit and framed to make the food look particularly lucious.  It usually fills very glossy magazines and high-priced books.  It does not fit in a VCR.  Sorry, Larry.)  Of the last order that came in, James McNair's Build a Better Burger had some good low-end food porn, with fun pictures of meat and buns and sauce.  Susanna Foo's Fresh Inspiration: New Approaches to Chinese Cuisine is loaded with food porn.  I was keeping it next to my register when I was cashiering this weekend.  It's facinating how many women love to look at food porn, how their breathing quickens and they suddenly close the book, almost embarrassed (but not quite).  Jeffery Steingarten's It Must Have Been Something I Ate, in spite of it's imagination-provoking title, contains nothing but prose.  On second thought, this is probably a good thing, and if you have ever seen Steingarten on Iron Chef America you will understand why.

So, what did arrive?

Roast Chicken and Other Stories, by Simon Hopkinson.  Apparently he's a big seller in England.  Here in America, we're still doubtful about English food.

The Lost Ravioli Recipes of Hoboken: A Search for Food and Family, by Laura Schenone.  Apparently, we also have our doubts about food from New Jersey.

The Oldways Table: Essays & Recipes From the Culinary Think Tank, by K. Dun Gifford & Sara Baer-Sinnott.  A quick glance tells me this probably would have sold better if it had had photography instead of wood-cut style drawing.

And, the freebie, The Bar: A Spirited Guide to Cocktail Alchemy, by Oliver Said & James Mellgren.  There's some b&w photography, but glassware doesn't really make for good food porn.

I've enough reading now to last me through the summer, I think.

Unless Jessica's Biscuit absolutely insists on sending der B another email.   ;)

Well, I'm finding that I'm getting old.   I just can't stay up late like I used to.   :-\   Without suffering severe consequences.    :P

I think it was either last Friday's 20/20 or Dateline NBC that had a piece on the dangers of not getting enough sleep.  I have it on my DVR, but I haven't had taken the time to watch it yet.  I know I don't get enough sleep, so maybe this'll be an incentive.

The premiere episode of the Canadian version of HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA (premiered last night). They are looking for a Maria for the SOUND OF MUSIC in toronto.

One thing which i did not know which made me very happy was that John Barrowman is the 3rd member of the judging panel. And he was on a lot, giving acting lessons.

And apparently we get to vote (did not really realize this). But should have.

They are going from 200 to 50 girls. 50 go to maria school. And then i think they go to 20. And then we get to vote starting next sunday from about 10.

Character, or actor?

(Or would we lose count on the latter?)

I'm enraged, shocked and thoroughly disgusted this morning:

Parents of a 13-year-old boy in a small town near Raleigh NC have been arrested for felony child abuse after tying their son to a tree overnight for two nights.  He was discovered dead on the afternoon after the second night.  He was "being punished".

A man in Turlock CA was found beating a 1-year-old child mercilessly on a quiet road -- slapping, punching, throwing to the ground and kicking the child.  A couple driving along stopped and tried to get him to stop but he was intent on his mission.  Police arrived, the man didn't respond, and he was shot to death by police.  Identities have not been made of man or child.

This is a sick, sick, sick world.

LOL!

The sad thing about this concept is that any actor or actress worthy of being hired should not NEED a special school in which to immerse himself into a character.

I'm quite certain Mary Martin didn't go to one, and neiither did Julie Andrews.  Any "nun" training would have been done via an advisor.   I daresy they won't have nun advisors in this "Maria School".

I thoroughly enjoyed some of the production numbers last night, both from the nominated musicals and from past Tony winners.  And that includes the "Whoopi" ones, too.
