DR SWoody, how do you feel about customers bringing their own canvas bags?
I love it!

For one thing, it's the whole green attitude.

Plus, the canvas (or other material) bags are usually much stronger than the plastic or paper that we supply.

Many of them are well constructed, and easy to pack.  And they hold a lot.

And, if they're from someplace other than our own store (in which case, they're probably from a store not in our area), they're a great conversation starter.

For instance, I've found that people using the reusable bags are often also interested in farmer's markets.  That's always a good thing.

Oh, and at our store we give a five cent discount per bag used.  It used to be three cents a bag, but we recently had a little inflation hit.   ;D

DR SWoody, thank you for your response.

How do you feel about the customer helping to bag her own groceries if there is not a bag person available?

My DVD viewing last night was "Becoming Jane", a mostly enjoyable account of Ms. Austen's early years.  I say "mostly" because after two-thirds of a rather enjoyable film, the pacing became sluggish and more enamored of visuals than anything that propelled the story.

I went from very interested to yelling at the TV screen to "MOVE IT ALONG"!

Ann Hathaway is wonderful  Ditto James McAvoy.

I thought, however, that the most noble individual in the whole endeavor was Mr. Wisley, portrayed by Laurence Fox.  His character was the one most firmly "finished" -- an "heir"-to-be who is reluctant to be his own person, who is biding his time and who hopes to win a bride to solidify his inheritance.  How unfortunate for him that he picked the one girl in his county who could think and wanted a man who put himself "out there" rather than held himself in reserve.

I almost always bag my own groceries, if there is not a bagger, and it speeds things up tremendously.

Very rarely, however, does the employee say, "Thank you for bagging!"

But that's the NY metro area for you.

The way our registers are set up, it is actually easier for me to bag than it is for the customer to do so.

Next to the scanner are two bag holders, tiered so that they are both easy to reach.  This way, I can be working on one bag, filling it with canned goods for example, and another bag, filling it with produce.  And I'm danged fast, if I do say so myself.

Between where I am working and the typical "bagging" section (towards the back) is a gap of about two and a half feet.  This makes it easy for me to take the filled bags and move them into the grocery cart as I go.  And our elderly customers (Rehoboth being part retirement town) appreciate the loading of the cart, along with the bagging.

That two and a half feet, however, makes it more difficult for me to hand the items to a customer.  Even with my long arms, that's a stretch.  And I'm usually moving a lot faster than the customers.  Remember, I do this for a living, I've had practice.

Yes, I could put up the mechanical belt that connects the scanner section with the back section, and just put the items on the belt, but I'm still a lot faster than the customers, and usually everything backs up when the customer insists on doing their own bagging.

But this is just how our the registers at our own store is organized.  I've met uncountable customers from the New York (city and state) area who are surprised to find me bagging, as they usually have to do it themselves.

And they are also amazed at how quickly I get finished, saving them time so they can get back to the traffic jams on the highway.   ::)

On the other hand, there are customers who are very well organized, whom I can work well as a team.  And I appreciate their help, and their attitude.

But, then again, there are the husbands who have been dragged along by their wives on this grocery chore, and try to feel useful by grabbing the bags out of my hands so that they can load the cart themselves.  Not only do they frequently put heavy bags on top of the bread (which I would have set aside, in order to avoid such a faux pas), they also frequently snag my fingers in the bag handles the first three or four times in the process of grabbing the bags.  I just smile and move on to the next bag.  (By which I do not mean the wife, who is patiently waiting with her pocketbook and rolling her eyes at this point.   ;))

I cannot imagine you ever getting in the way, DR Laura.

Just pay attention to the situation, how the register is set up.  Sometimes, smiling and saying a sincere thank-you is the nicest help you can give the cashier.

But I'm sure that comes automatically with you.   :-*
