Why am I up at four-thirty?
Well, at about four-thirty your time, it was about seven-thirty on the flip-side coast, and we were having a hellacious thunderstorm.  It probably woke you up - it certainly did waken me!

DR TCB - how much of the tall ships display can you see from your balcony?  It looks like a spectacular event.

I could only see the Parade of Ships when they arrived on Thursday afternoon.  Where they are currently berthed is on the waterway in downtown Tacoma.  However several of the ships are taking passengers for sails (is that a word?) around Puget Sound.  So, every now and then I will look up from my 21st Century computer, to witness a 19th century-style ship sailing by.

Well, not much to congratulate for me, since it's only been one week and doesn't even make a dent in what I need to lose, but at least I didn't gain weight! Vixmom, bk and Jennifer inspire me to stay motivated!

Not gaining weight is a great thing (if you ask me)!  Congrats!  :D

I know that WALL-E will be around for awhile, so I usually try to see independent films first, since they disappear quickly. I know I will love it when I see it, especially since I like Pixar films and Thomas Newman's music. (bk, have you heard Tomas Newman's score for LITTLE WOMEN? If not, give it a listen and it might change your mind about him.)

My TOD:  Where and when did everyone meet their first significant other?

I met mine (my current S.O. and the only one I count!) in a cold warehouse working on a film for our friend John, the Merchant Ivory editor. He was the only one who stayed to help me clean up (I was responsible for  getting this place to shoot.)  I had a miserable cold at the time and working on this didn't help matters, so his kindess impressed me.

I fell in love with him while working out west on a documentary about the farm crisis, back in the 80's. I "loved him once in silence", and it turned out that he felt the same way about me. I wish we had bothered to tell each other this earlier---it would have saved us both years of being miserable with other people we didn't belong with, and we would have had more happy years together, but...better late than never! (Our friend John's father performed our marriage ceremony, which seemed fitting!)

I think I may have been the first one here to post about Wall-E.  I loved it, of course.

One of the great things that tie the Pixar films together (aside from Ratzenberger, who voices John this time around) is the sense of community that they all have.  From the toys in Andy's bedroom, through the ant colony, the monster city, the various communities below the sea, the town of garages, and Paris, the adventures of the lead characters have always been seen against the credible worlds they live in.

OK, maybe Cars isn't a good example of credible.  I mean, how did they build all these things?  Cars don't have hands, dang it!  Which is why, of all the Pixar films, Cars is the only one I don't care for.  (And this one is up for a sequel?  Sheesh.)

And The Incredibles is about a family forced to live without it's community, a community of superheroes who have subsequently been killed off.

Wall-E is different.  Wall-E doesn't have a community.  He's the last of his kind, and everyone else has either flown off or broken and can only be used for spare parts.  But part of the story is how he then finds a community by following Eve.  It's a community of both humans and robots, and maybe because of Wall-E the two parts of that community will become one.

Yep, I love Wall-E.  And Wall-E.

Larry - I tried to return your call, but it keeps ringing and ringing, and even the machine won't pick up.  :(

I had called from the office on my cell, DR FJL; turns out my home phone answering machine was unplugged.  I suspect it happened last night while I was vacuuming. Did I tell you all the neighbor directly above me now has bed bugs? Oy!

DR TCB, I just reamed her out for not posting.  She said that I post enough she doesn't have to.  Poor excuse!  I told her to get back on here that she is the one that is the theater buff, not me! She'll be back soon.  She has been doing a lot of research on our NY trip and gathering info and working full time at that and I've been between jobs so have more time to be here.  Now, next week may be different, you might not see me very much! That's a good thing actually, being hoping this temp to hire job works out.

Since we're staying at the Algonquin, I have read a biography on Robert Benchley and Dorothy Parker now and am now reading The Portable Dorothy Parker, so I can educate myself a little before we leave on the 21st.

DR JulieC40 - In a scene right out of The Music Man, Richard and I met across the reference desk in the library where I had my first job out of grad school.

Of course, that's where I also met DR Elmore, but that's a different story!

DR JulieC40 - you might also want to watch the film Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, much of which takes place in the Algonquin.

Looking West - Riverside Drive, the Henry Hudson Parkway, the Hudson River, Edgewater, NJ.  ;)

*And if you were to take a virtual right in this picture, and walk down a block, you would come across Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, as well as the big and crazy Fairway - "Like No Other Market".

Looking East - The raised tracks to the left and in the distance are the subway tracks for the 1 Train that run above Broadway at 125th Street.

I'm still not quite understanding why our usual movie hounds, the ones that run out to see almost any high-profile film within the first couple of days, seem so ambivilent about Wall-E.  I'm sure there's a reason, and I'm very interested in learning what it is.  There seems to be either a subtle resistence to seeing it, or no interest at all.  And I find that odd, given that it's the best-reviewed film of the year.

Well i don't go see that many movies. But I can say why I was so excited about SEX & THE CITY and MAMMA MIA, and yet i'm not about WALl-E.

SEX & THE CITY was a show so many of us watched for years. and to me the movie was big news. And i was so excited.

For MAMMA MIA, it is musical theatre, and a big summer blockbuster. And meryl streep. I am very anxious for this.

But WALL-E, i personally did not hear that much about. At least not here. It could be the animated part. Not all adults rush to such movies. Usually the popular ones (say SHREK for example) are movies you have to take your kids to.

Does anyone else remember the ALL IN THE FAMILY epsiode where Archie and Mike argued back and forth on whether to put on both socks first, or one sock, one shoe and then the other sock and the other shoe.

He realized recently that I alway put on my left sock, left shoe; and then my right sock and right shoe.  I wonder what that means about me?

Anyone else feel like weighing in? Pantyhose doesn't count.

I put on both socks first - in no particular order - and then my shoes - again, in no particular order.
