My boss is back off her summer vac....and we get busy talking....or updating her on stuff....or getting filled in on her trip.

It takes me away from the important things....

It is looking very much like we may get a storm tonight. It would be our first significant rain since the end of May (which was a nice bonus, since it rarely rains at the end of May).

This news will surely bring Pogue a welcome sense of anticipation:

MOVIE NEWS

Quote

MEET THE NEW SHERLOCK AND WATSON: BARON COHEN AND FERRELL

It may be a stretch to picture the man who donned a neon man-kini as the dapper Sherlock Holmes, but Sacha Baron Cohen is nothing if not malleable in his roles. The brain behind Borat is set to play the fictional crime-solving legend, and is teaming up with Will Ferrell as his partner, Watson.

Judd Apatow and Jimmy Miller — the same team that first paired the actors in Talladega Nights — will be producing the comedy.

Gives a new meaning to "aweful dread".

Well, for those who have not seen E.T. or CITIZEN KANE, it has to be because you have no interest in them. They've certainly been available for rent or purchase for a long time.

At least you know they're there if you DO get curious.

Actually, the 60th Aniversary 2 disk special edition of Citizen Kane is on the bookshelf.

In today's mail was a letter from the cable company informing us that our basic television cable (which was part of a bundle with the internet cable) will be increased to $25 per month (up from $10). I think I have an errand to run.

You're lucky - ours is $86.90 without the Preminum Channels.

Of course it helps to have a TV  :)

Good Evening!

When I headed out earlier, I ended up heading over to a friend's house for a brief visit and to drop off a DVD he had asked about.  He and his partner and their son are going on the Rosie Cruise next week, so it was good chance to see him before he hits the high seas.

Since he lives right of Central Park West, I just decided to head into the park.  I took a nice walk around the North Meadow, along the east side of the Reservoir, and ended up walking all the way down to the Boathouse and Bethesda Terrace/Fountain.  It really was/is a gorgeous afternoon. I had brought a blanket with me, so I sat down for a bit and did some reading... and napping.  :)

Actually, I'm the only vegetarian in the family.  DS Gabe is something of a chickenphile (that's a word, I'm sure of it), and on this trip he also got "real" bacon for the first time, which he loved.  :)

He told me the shark was only about as big as his arm, which still didn't allay my panic.

In other breaking news, DS Betsy just sent me a bunch o'pics from a little town known as Studio City, CA, or something like that--Ed Begley, Jr. and Bill Nye the Science Guy were parading around Begley's newly installed solar panels and home composting unit (which produces energy from methane).  Could these be BK's new neighbors, per chance?  :)

Once I got home, I threw my dinner together.  I cubed a piece of halibut, then put the cubes in a small baking dish.  Threw in a few grape tomatoes.  Drizzled everything with some olive oil, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, and a squeeze of lemon juice.  10 minutes in a 400 degree oven, and...  YUM!

That $10 was the basic cable part of the bundle, which got us the standard network stuff, a few Spanish channels, and a Discovery channel. Nothing else.

No surprise about Passing Strange - the only surprise is that they're filming it for MTV broadcast, so, thanks to that, the producers will at least see some of their dough back.

It has yet to be determined where and how Spike Lee will show his film of Passing Strange.  It could hit the cable TV circuit - most likely HBO, Showtime, etc. - or it could also go the movie theatre route.

I'm just wondering if Spike Lee will be able to tape the show two additional times without an audience - as has been reported - between now and when the show closes.

"Somebody", in a previous incarnation, opined, in print:

Quote
Return To Oz was one of the most critically lambasted movies in recent memory. In addition, audiences stayed away in droves. ... This is all very unfortunate because Return To Oz is a mostly wonderful picture - well directed...beautifully photographed...and unforgettably scored....hopefully someday people will discover the movie, and enjoy it for the fine film that it is.

Unfortunately, that "somebody's" proof readers let nonsense phrases like"...the opening shot of Dorothy lying bed unable to sleep..." slip into print.

BTW, I checked about MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. The cable guide said tonight's was a new episode, but the description was of last week's episode. So, I don't know what's going on there.

DR MattH - I noticed the same issue with the cable system up here.  It looks like the cable guide descriptions have been a week ahead or behind.  Tonight's episode is currently titled, "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace" - which was last weeks' episode.  However, last week, our cable guide said it was supposed to be "Otters, Cubs and Bears.. Oh My" (or something like that).  And it was a week ahead the previous week too.  I have a feeling someone switched something along the way.  We shall see.

The doctor I saw today for the blood clot situation was not ready to tell me I could go back to work, as planned, on July 22.  He wants me to be seen in the office (by my usual doctor) next week before anyone gives me the green light.  Guess I'd better line up my understudy for the July edition of Grantseeking Basics - it's scheduled for the evening of the 22nd.

Hmm... And to confuse things even more, I just checked TVGuide.com.  It has the NEW episode at 9:00pm - "Otters, Cubs and Bears... Oh My!", and "Speak Now..." at 10:00pm.  But aren't the new eps on at 10:00pm?

Maybe that writer doesn't have issues with errors in other folks' internet comments.  Maybe he's sometimes just "giving back" to an occasional writer who seems to thrive on correcting others for spelling/grammar/punctuation mistakes but often makes uncorrected mistakes of his own!    ;)
