The World Music section at our Salem BORDER'S has shrunken from a whole aisle of CDs to one very tiny, tiny section. I was sad.

Would I like Os Mutantes?

If you like The Beach Boys' SMiLE album, you ight like them.

Or if you drop some acid first, you might like them.

Is that a fair assessment, JMK?

Thanks for the tip!

I came in late, Amy, sorry.  But that album that Sing posted has some of their most well known, so maybe it was from that one.  If you liked them, try Grupo Manifesto, one of the earliest groups the future Mrs. Mendes, Gracinha Leporace, was in.

Yes, especially the dropping acid part (not that I would know anything about that, of course).   8)  Os Mutantes are among the followers of Tropicalia, the psychedelic movement that was started by such folk as Caetano Veloso and, to a lesser extent, BK semi-fave Chico Buarque back in the late 60s and 70s.

Got my grocery shopping done without problems. The store was almost empty, and I zipped right though the checkout line. (I did pay.)

I began my afternoon viewing by watching the Christmas episode of THE CLOSER from last season. Just like it did when I first saw it, I had tears streaming down my face through much of the last half hour. A really great show.

I think Kyra picked the right episode for her Emmy submission, but this would certainly have been my second choice for her.

Matt H, yes I know Michael’s mother has some annoying & silly lines.  It is just that I get it now.  She simply wants him close.  He was gone so long and didn’t even write.  It isn’t about what she says or does, it is about her missing him & trying to understand his life & why he wasn’t around.  I am now more tolerant of her character & appreciate her more.

Next, I watched five episodes of RENO 911! from the fifth season set. (There are 16 episodes in all.) One of the five I hadn't seen, so I'm sure there will be others that will also be new to me.

Jack Plotnick plays a running gag neighborhood sexual predator always trying to lure kids into his house by offering a free haunted house or holding NUTCRACKER auditions (of course, Dangle shows up wearing tie-dyed leotards). It's very funny when he's questioned about what he's doing.

There are three episodes on the first disc that have commentaries, and I listened to one of them since I had seen the episode before and didn't need to hear what the actors were saying. I assume all of the commentaries are going to be as free wheeling as that one. The two actors (Cedric Yarborough, Wendy Covey) did some really good scat singing.

And my favorite recurring character Terry has been in three of the five episodes I watched (including the one that I hadn't seen during the original broadcast). I didn't realize in the season premiere that the girl who played his "girl friend" was played by Christina Applegate!

Speaking of copyrighted material surfacing on the web, it didn't take long for the CLOSER season 3 gag reel to show up. At least the poster says he'll take it down if asked.

I ended my afternoon viewing by watching the first half of last night's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. The dog stuff was really funny since Kathy's dogs are perfectly fine until she riles them up. I'll be curious to see how that dog whisperer segment pays off later in the show. I have the gang at their "seminar" right now. Kathy and Steve have just sneaked in the back door.

Poor Matt H! I'm going to side with Nursie on this one; I love Sharon Gless and I think part of what I enjoy about her is Michael's combination of love and annoyance. I do admit that she works better when she's an integral part of the lot, from putting up guests in the garage to dealing with her two sons, but the creative team can't always guarantee that much in an episode when they're trying to keep balls of the main caper in the air.

Hello, Y'll!

I'm back in LA - my sister Rikki had a terrible spine surgery on Tuesday, and I'm bringing her home today. I'll be staying with her at least a week.

As long as I was coming down, I booked a gig as Music Director/Arranger for a production of Harold Pinter's BETRAYAL at the Matrix in Hollywood - starring Henry Simmons and Sophina Brown who co-starred with James Woods in Shark. Sophina just booked a regular starring role on Numb3rs - can't wait to see it.

Anyway, it's a sparse, very well-acted production, and they allowed me to hire in classical cello and clarinet with a honky tonk piano, and do all the cues in 3/4 time - waltz - get it? - the three actors (three instruments, get it?) all dance around each other... the director kept changing his mind about stuff, but by last Saturday had made some good decisions - which left all day Sunday to write/re-write my arrangements, and Monday to record the cues. I used that great Russian cellist I had on the last gig. So much Fun!!!

So the show opened last night - Variety was there, Vanity Fair, blahblahblah. It all came together in such a satisfying way!
