Yes, William Eythe was gay according to every source I've ever read about classic Hollywood. He had a very effective role in THE SONG OF BERNADETTE as well as some of the films bk mentioned. Allegedly, he and Lon McCallister were a couple both before and after his very brief and unhappy marriage to Buff Cobb.

The coup de grace to William Eythe's career was when he was arrested for men's room activities on the opening night of Cole Porter's OUT OF THIS WORLD, in which he played Priscilla Gillette's husband. I believe he and she sang "From This moment On" before George Abbott (?) cut the number from the show.
