Been watching the Olympics ceremony and will soon go to bed.  I never did get a call telling me how much blood thinner to take tonight, so I guessed (conservatively).  Tomorrow is my first Saturday to work since May 31  :P

Keith's mom remains in my prayers.

'night!

I feel that way about the Westcoasters who post at night! So maybe you should stay up late, Druxy!

My problem in staying up late...which I used to do...is that I have a cat who wakes me up VERY EARLY, wanting to be fed.

She will NOT be ignored.

[Shooting her with real bullets is not an option & a squirt gun didn't work.]

So, once I'm up, I'm up.

Hopefully, I can grab a 1-hour nap in the afternoon.  Otherwise, I'm dead after 4 pm.

Good Evening!

I know the calendar says it's August 8, that it is Summer, but I swear it fell like an early fall day today.  Cool, breezy, and just a touch of humidity in the air.  Wonderful, wonderful!

Now, BK, you know why I was yawning so much at the rehearsal the other day.

DR Druzy, I used to grab cats like that and hold them close to me under the covers.  I never, ever got up and fed them.  Eventually it stopped the early morning wake up call.
Oh, and I did not feed the cat until I had been up for awhile, so my getting out of bed didn't signal feeding time.

Going to sleep earlier works too.

I ended up seeing "Mamma Mia!" (the movie) earlier this afternoon...

It was a good movie, but could have been - and should have been much better.  Pierce Brosnan's singing "voice" did bother me, but I thought the director/editor made a very smart choice to not show him singing the first time he sang.  You had to "think" if that was him singing.  ;)

Strangely enough, the casting choice I had the most issue with was Meryl Streep.  I guess I've just seen her in too many of her "serious" roles, and it was just hard to accept her as a happy-go-lucky, somewhat carefree woman.  Yes, the character of Donna has some "conflict", but there were times when I felt that Ms. Streep was trying to bring too much to the table.  It was almost too "deep" a portrayal to me.

I also wanted the movie to be a bit more slicker.  The filmmakers have made mention of the relatively small budget they had, and, alas, it shows.  I was also a bit shocked and surprised to see that most of the choreography in the movie was just a recreation of the choreography from the stage show.

I did like it, but I found myself laughing a few times at the wrongs things for the wrong reasons.  -And some of the plot adjustments just didn't work for me at all.  Yes, there's a lot of "coincidence" in the original stage show, but at least those situations are set up (better).

Again, it was a good movie.  But instead of leaving the movie theatre wanting to see it again, I left the theatre wondering when I could see the stage version again.

Can a helpful NYer identify the white orb?

der Brucer

That is the "new" Hot Air Balloon ride that they are offering in Central Park throughout the end of the summer.  $25 for 15 minutes.  I've had some friends who have done it, and enjoyed it.  However, they said the wait in line was quite the wait.  A group of friends lined up one morning at 6:30am to be the first ones in line.

Fortunately, der Brucer is NOT 88.  That would have been overkill.

...And then DR MBarnum would have had to interview him.

I got an e-mail from Sergio's wife once.

...And I actually used to work for Mrs. Franchi.  She runs an opera foundation that supports young singers.  Each year at the National Italian-American Foundation dinner in DC, she would showcase that year's scholarship recipients, and I was their accompanist.  It was always quite an interesting and fun day.  Alas, we never got to partake of the meal, but we did get to hobnob with the celebrity honorees since we were usually holed up in the same waiting room before taking the stage.  -I still remember having to check to see if I was drooling when I got to meet Stanley Tucci.  ;)

Which reminds me...

I'll be at work on Monday, so der B will have to do the scorekeeping for most of the next game.

Happy Birthday to him.  ;)

Back to "Mamma Mia!" for a second...

I saw it at the Ziegfeld Theatre.  The Ziegfeld has a seating capacity of a little over 1100.  There were about 50 people in the theatre at this afternoon's 4:15 showing.  -I have a feeling I would not have squirmed so much during the "curtain call" had the theatre been full.  ;)

A celebrity is someone whose face gets plastered on the magazines that line the grocery store cash register lanes.

You don't need to know who they are.  Not really.

The birthday din-din was a success.  The anchovies were not obviously there, but lent a nice saltiness and something else to the flavor of the meat.  The lamb itself was gloriously on the tender side of medium rare.  And the accompaniments worked very nicely.

Der Brucer is now mixing himself some hard sauce to go with his pudding.  He seems happy.

As for myself, I've got to get some sleep.  I've a full day of checking tomorrow.  Hasta.

But before I go...

A couple of notes about the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

First...

Wow!  The Chinese really know how to do the Wave!   :D

Second...

The girls lining the track during the Parade of the Atheletes need a change of costume.  With their clapping and little hops they'd look far more appropriate if they were wearing Hooters t-shirts.   ::)
