Tipsy again, thanks to two rum and Coca Colas. Donna Lynne's show was fantastic and deserves a live recording. It's one of the most novel cabaret acts I've seen, based on embarrassing and cautionary tales from her life that have lessons for all to learn from, such as "the year I stalked Brian D'Arcy James," which could be a cautionary lesson for such yokels as our DR MBarnum. Other good stories dealt with "one night stands," auditioning on heavy pain medication after surgery, and going on for the first time in her first Broadway show, "The Dead."

Tom Kitt provided wonderful support at the piano and there was a lovely crowd. I waved at someone I knew (what was his name?), had a nice talk with Barbara Walsh and her husband Jack, spent a brief moment with Miss Merrill Grant and her date, and said hello to other wonderful friends I'd not seen in a while.

My understanding is that Disney is trying to release as much teen and tween-oriented material now in order to give the theatrical release of "High School Musical 3" some breathing room.  -They've even announced closing dates for the "High School Musical" stage shows in the park over the next couple of weeks.  It's all about saturation.

Well, that's an interesting scenario. Hope it works out for them.

It begs the question, though, whether it was the standard video being broadcast in HD, or whether it was an HD mastering of the film, itself.  At least, that's what I'm thinking "might" be a possibility.  If an HD channel wants to broadcast an anamorphic image of a film that has not been processed for HD, can they not essentially upconvert it for the HD broadcast?

It is possible, I suppose, but with the Blu-ray coming out in October, it seems likely this is the HD master that Showtime is running. I feel certain where an HD master is available, that's what they use.

The bigger point to make is that Blu-ray is 1080p, and the Showtime-HD broadcast was 1080i and heavily compressed with hundreds of other cable channels so obviously the Blu-ray is going to look AT LEAST as good if not better.

I began my evening of viewing with TRANSFORMERS on HBO-HD. I was turned off immediately because of HBO's irritating habit of reformatting widescreen films even in HD to fit the 1.78:1 aspect ratio of widescreen TVs. Compositions were so screwy that I got mad over and over while watching the movie.

Secondly, the film was WAY too long. Almost 2 1/2 hours for something that should have been 90 minutes. I got SO bored with all the battles, just like I did when I reviewed the animated Transformers shows.

Yes, the special effects and sound design were done beautifully, but the human stuff was just SO insignificent.

I am SO glad I didn't blind buy this on DVD or HD-DVD. The Blu-ray comes out very soon, and I won't be buying that either.

Next, I finished episode #3 of MAD MEN which I had started this afternoon. Marvelous episode, and the HD is SUCH an improvement from the SD telecast. (The photography at during the restaurant scene near the close was really lush.) I sure hope On Demand keeps doing this during the run of the season. This is the only way to watch it.

Next, I watched THE CLOSER "live" (so that should put your mind to rest, DR Edi!)

Marvelous episode; loved the final scene with Provenza and Pope.

Poor Fritz was barely in this episode, but I guess there was no fallout from the blow-up they had last week.

I concluded my free day of viewing by watching two episodes of MYSTERIES AND SCANDALS which I recorded eons ago off E! The two I watched involved George Reeves and James Dean. I noticed the next one on the DVD-R was on Jean Harlow. Maybe I'll watch that tomorrow while I cook and eat lunch.

Vibes to DR JANE....

DR ELMORE that is a lush and handsome new avatar!

The crowd reaction to the vocal stylings of Miss Dorothy Provine during the pre show and intermission at SINGIN' IN THE RAIN have been most positive....and of course the orchestrations and vocal arrangements are most appropriate.

DR GINNY - did they have real rain in the production you saw?

Watched two episodes of MAD MEN that I found most enjoyable, although certainly the women get the worst of almost every situation way back in 1963.

On a different note:

Chicago....DR CILLA LIZ is on the way...

Wow...DR BEN is back in NYC and DR SINGDAW and husband are there as well.....

I just spent the entire evening hooking up a new power surge protector thing...it is big, heavy, and expensive. My old one bit the dust last night.

Since I had to replug everything into it I decided to also plug in my new printer/scanner and flat screen LCD screen that my mom gave me several months ago. I also cleaned out tons of dust and dirt. Yuch.

I sure can see things better with this new screen!

Yay!

But actually, the show that aired last week was 403. They decided to air 404 (the one about the high school kids) first. So the fallout was actually in the previous week. The original 404 script included this reference:

BRENDA
I’m sorry to ask your opinion when
you’re not talking to me.

FRITZ
Well. I’ll be mad at you again when
you’re not so upset.

I can't remember if it made it into the final show, but if it did, the comment wouldn't have made any sense when aired out of order.
