The bed-room TV gave up the ghost - clear sound but a picture collapsed into a shimmering line across the center of the screen. I bought it a Wal-Mart for under $200 over five years ago (after we moved and before the moving trailer arrived.) Try to find a replacement for that price today!) The bedroom TV is for my News show addiction in the evening and for Woody's DVD viewing when I am monopolizing the living room TV in the evenings. The shopping experience was one of the infernal "this is nice but for another $X I can have" episodes that can lead to a very expensive purpose. I had to keep reminding myself "You are just replacing an old TV, not upgrading the home entertainment center!" I settled on a 26" Sanyo 720 LCD HDTV for under $400. Much to my pleasant surprise, I just plugged it in, hooked up the dangling co-ax from the old system, and after an automatic, lengthy, channel search, up popped FoxNews! Woody pop-in a DVD in the old DVD player, an got his movie! (The DVD player is actually connected (by coax) between the COMCAST receiver and the TV.) I can worry about upgrading my cable service for this set until later. Meanwhile I think I'll move the up-convert DVD player from the living room to the bedroom and hook it up with HDMI. And, I'm guessing that for DVD viewing on a 26" set, the lack of 1080p will not be missed.
