I hear he's very good as DeBecque, but I think the picnic is missing a few sandwiches.

Still, I wouldn't mind having a snack at that picnic!

I watched three episodes of GHOST WHISPERER this afternoon. The one with the returning Iraq soldier I recall as being one of my favorites of the entire season, and I was bawling by the end of it (not an unusual occurrence when watching this show.)

I'd never heard of this...it's pretty cool!

Next I watched the bonus features on the first disc. There was an overiew of the season that was about 12 minutes long. There was a 2-minute animated comic stript with Melinda and Jim. And there were 8 webisodes with a story of someone realizing he's dead.

Since PSYCH and MONK aren't on tonight (more U.S. Open tennis), I should easily get four or five more episodes watched tonight.

...and the line for the "Free Friday Nights" was already around the block by the time I left.  I hope Ginny and Richard made it out before that lobby became really(!) crowded.

Just barely, DR Jose!  I was in the gift shop only a short time (about $30 20 minutes), and by the time I went back out in the lobby it was mobbed.  Instead of trying to get past security, I just phoned DH Richard and he met me at the 54th St. entrance.  The end of the line was on 54th by then.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Day at the Museum with Jose.  He is a very informed tour guide who seems to derive a lot of pleasure in sharing the City with others.

We're now home relaxing before meeting him and DR Elmore at Artie's for dinner and then seeing South Pacific.

Given how many people are suffering as a result of high gasoline prices, high food prices, and high heating bills, I'd like to see the conventions cut back. In fact, I'd like to see this in many areas. I'm really tired of all this over-the-top business. I don't expect it to solve all the nation's problems--far from it--and it would hurt some perhaps, but IMO a back-to-basics approach is in order.

Just my 2 cents.

I have to say that moving the final night of the Convention to a football stadium seemed liked a huge and gratuitous waste of money.  Yes, I get the "symbolism" of it all - opening the event to "everyone" - but renting a stadium ain't cheap, and those weren't 500 volunteers setting up that stage and all those chairs on the field.  -I wonder if any financial figures are available, will be released.

*I think I've mentioned this before, but...  The Obama "team" has been out here on the streets of NYC for the past couple of weeks in full force. "Excuse me, do you have a moment or two for Change?"

One woman responded something along the line of:
If you truly believe that Obama will be the next President of the United States, why do you still need my money or my friends' money?  Wouldn't it be better to tell people to make sure that they go to the polls in November - and to make sure that they get their friends to do the same?  I do support the Democratic party, but I am not about to give money to an organization in order to pay for TV commercials, travel expenses or hotel rooms.

-The "poor" girl was a bit stunned.  And speechless.  ;)

Jose - will you be able to come to dinner on Sunday?

I'm actually not sure right now if I can.  At first I thought I could, but it now looks like my parents will be coming into town Sunday for the day - instead of Wednesday.  -I just got the call.. "So, can you get us tickets for a show on Sunday?"  -Um, no.  In any case...  Can I give you a "maybe"?  If they do come in that day, they will most likely leave after the matinee, so I should be able to make it for dinner.

How often do you have to charge that iPhone, anyway?   You seem to be getting good use out of it!!

Well, here are the specs directly from Apple:

Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery
Charging via USB to computer system or power adapter

Talk time:
Up to 5 hours on 3G
Up to 10 hours on 2G
Standby time: Up to 300 hours

Internet use:
Up to 5 hours on 3G
Up to 6 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 7 hours
Audio playback: Up to 24 hours

This is my first "data phone", and I was a little taken aback by the relatively short battery time - at least in comparison to my previous cell phones.  However, I did some research on the talk times and internet times on other data phones - Blackberrys, Treos, etc. - and found the battery life to be comparable.  And I do seem to be experiencing the battery times that Apple has listed.

*I also realized that I should not normally be talking on my phone for four hours each day, nor using it five hours in a row for internet usage.  I don't ever want to become one of "those people".  No "Crack-Berry Syndrome" for me.  -Although, in the few short weeks I've had my iPhone, I have had a few "lapses", and, of course, my iPhone came in handy when I was in the ER yesterday with DR elmore.

**I also carry the charging adapter with me too, just in case.

Cup or cone?

How many scoops?  Sugar cone or waffle cone?

What flavor?

Any toppings?

I have a scenario for all DR's to chime in on...

If you were working on a show (in any capacity), say a show by one of bk's close personal friends, and you are witness to the director hacking the script to bits - you know leaving out dialogue/lyrics that tell the story, because they feel the "show is too long".  Would you contact the licensee regarding these cuts?  Or would you just keep your mouth shut?

Or you could tell someone who happens to have friends at the licensing company that they may want to "investigate" a production currently in rehearsal.

-Does anyone remember that production of Company in Richmond, VA, that made "Bobby", "Bobbi"?   -I thought not.   :-X   (And it was running at the same time as the Sondheim Celebration's production at the Kennedy Center just 100 miles away in DC!?!?!?)

I'm up even earlier than I wanted to be after some mighty strange dream in which Clay Aiken (!) kept leaving messages telling me he was leaving tickets for me for a play he was in.

He's going back into Spamalot in September...maybe that was it!

bk - The current production of Gypsy and it's resulting OCR is different from the ones that have come before it.  Even Arthur Laurents admits to that.  I know that you - and many other people - love and "trust" Merman's original, but I think you also just have to sit back and listen to the new recording as a whole - and not comment from track to track.  It all works as a whole, not song by song, track by track.

Yes, you still may not like it, but at least give it a fair listen.

*And as far as the "weird tempos" are concerned, I have it on good authority that those were/are not the responsibility/"fault" of the conductor.  -And I believe I have made mention of some of the "interesting" tweaks that were instituted for the current revival - including changes from the original Encores!' production from last summer.

I hear you, but I did listen as a whole, straight through, merely commenting as I was listening, athough mostly after a track had finished.  I thought Tony Yazbeck's All I Need Is The Girl, one of the worst things I've ever heard - just my opinion, though.   If the tempo decisions are not the conductor's, I'm sort of at a loss as to whose they are.  I don't think eighty year old Mr. Laurents is making with the tempos, and certainly Mr. Sondheim wasn't (this I know).  I wanted to love it, and I certainly enjoyed some of it.  It's my favorite score and show ever.  I'm sure I would enjoy it on stage, but as a listening experience I found it really odd a lot of the time.  Not talking about the techinical production of the CD, but the acting choices and odd approaches that, for me, just didn't work, at least not as a listening experience.  All I Need Is The Girl is a very specific song done by someone who is trying to create a very specific thing for himself - and debonair is the key to the song, it's what it's about lyrically and musically.  This version is like some weird mutant version.  But I haven't liked any of the Tulsas I've seen or heard - I don't know why that part is so hard to get right.  Mr. Wallace got it perfectly - the dreamer, the debonair song and dance man, all of it.

I can accept what Patti is doing and responded to certain things more than others.  Laura is a wonderful singer, but the interpretation of the "moo moo moo moo" is so wrong to my ear - again maybe it works on stage, but the character that I know as Louise wants to do her best - she just isn't very good.  The bored moo's just rubbed me wrong, I guess.  I thought the stripper number was successful, and the best-sounding thing on the CD.  And I was not thrilled with the tweaks, both arrangement-wise and orchestration-wise - if there's one show that doesn't need anybody's help, it's Gypsy.

My thoughts on this new Gypsy CD are, of course, mine own - I know a lot of people already consider this definitive, but now that I've heard it, it's certainly not definitive for me.  I would like to see the production and probably will attempt to when I'm in at the end of November.

At the mail place, I had a nice surprise - the Film Score Monthly box set called The MGM Soundtrack Treasury, which presents twenty film scores on twelve CDs - with some of my holy grails included - all mostly stuff that was on United Artists LPs - I'm listening to the first score - The Apartment, and it sounds just great, much better than the LP, which never sounded very good.  Also included in this incredible set is The Fortune Cookie, A Rage To Live, How To Murder Your Wife, Duel At Diablo, Billion Dollar Brain, Goodbye Again, Pussycat, Pussycat, I Love You, The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, Hornet's Nest, The Fugitive Kind, The Happy Ending, Shake Hands With The Devil, The Charge Of The Light Brigade, The Honey Pot, The Hills Run Red, The 7th Dawn, The Glory Guys, Hannibal Brooks, and The Final Option.  Good thing it's a long weekend.

I didn't buy it when DR Ron Pulliam said to, and of course now it is sold out.  Unless you wanna bid $300.00 on ebay.

I think elmore liked the Gypsy CD, so there's a different opinion.

I enjoyed it; I don't think any cast revival album except the 1960 FINIAN'S RAINBOW and THE 1970s KING & I surpasses the original cast recording. Lupone is better on the CD, and the tony Awards than I thought she was at City Center. And I liked Laura Benanti a lot.

Then I just have to vote for Obama and Biden!

DR MBarnum, are you still voting for Wilkie?
