I took DR MShayne's comments that way, too, Matt, which is why I mentioned "Maybe September." I'm not sure if they still do it the same way, but back then the Academy music department used to winnow down the pool to ten or so finalists, from which the final five nominees were culled. I have an old Academy list somewhere and "Maybe September" was one of the 10 finalists that year but didn't make the cut to be an actual nominee. IMHO, it far deserved a nomination more than "Wishing Doll." That said, Bernstein far more deserved to win for "Hawaii" than for "Thoroughly Modern Millie," for crying out loud. (The stupidest scoring Oscar ever, IMHO).
