Some Brel for Armistice Day:
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
The Flanders sun burns the sky
Since you are gone
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
In Flanders field the poppies die
Since you are gone
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Waait de wind de stomme wind
Zonder leifde, warme liefde
Weent de zee de grijze zee
Zonder liefde, warme leifde
Lijdt het licht het donk're licht
En schuurt het zand o ver mijn land
Mijn platte land mijn Vlanderland
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
The stars look down, so soon, so soon
The day is done
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
The Flanders moon won't light your way
The day is done
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Waait de wind c'est fini
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Weent de zee déjà fini
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Lidjt het licht tout est fini
En schuurt het zand over mijn land
Mijn platte land mijn Vlanderland
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
The bells have rung, the echoes sound
The day is gone
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
In Flanders field the echoes sound
The day is gone
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Lacht duivel de zwarte duivel
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Brandt mijn hart mijn oude hart
Zonder lifde, warme liefde
Sterft de zomer de droeve zomer
En schuurt het zand over mijn land
Mijn platte land mijn Vlanderland
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
Come back again, come back again
The day is gone
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
Your love alone, your love alone
The day is gone
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
Come back again, come back again
The day is gone
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
Your love alone, your love alone
The day is gone, the day is gone, the day is gone

As a child I used to listen to a tape my mother had of this song.  She told me she considered naming me Marieke after it because she liked it so much when she was pregnant with me.

I remember this song from my college days, the Judy Collins cover.  I never knew what it was about until now.

I may try to experince another cliche/movie/vaudeville bit.

A pie in the face, perhaps?    :)

Why not?  Anything for comedy.  As long as I don't have to clean it up!

Time to get back to that Jessica's Biscuit wish list that I've been paring down.

I've only got 250 items left to recheck.

  So does the Governator.

Yes.  It's only too bad that he didn't speak out more forcefully before the measure passed, as he had promised to do...

DR SWW, I like the Judy Collins cover of "Marieke," because of the lines concerning the towers, but, Shuman's translation captures the true essence of the song.
Elly Stone and Gay Marshall both have quite haunting renditions of the song available on BREL cast albums.

DR Ann - perhaps we here at HHW can call you "Ann Marieke," (an almost THAT GIRL reference).

Last week, a co-worker of mine got extremely angry with me.

She was crowing about Obama's victory, and I pointed out that the passage of Prop. 8 in California (and of Prop. 2 in Florida) kinda tarnished that victory.

I further pointed out that, what with Obama taking 65% of the vote in California, and with Prop. 8 taking 52% of the vote, that gave an overlap of a minimum of 13% of the vote, with people voting for Obama and for Prop. 8 at the same time.  (The same overlap applies to Floriday, by coincidence.)

Coworker was outraged.  "You can't believe any of those numbers, numbers lie!"

Uh, right.  This just proves to me that there is a lot of work left to be done, on both sides of the aisle.

"And, what does it matter to you, anyways?  You live in Delaware now."

My condolances to all the friends der B and I left in California.  I guess none of you matter any more.  Sorry about that.

(This exchange has been eating at me for a week now.  Bleh.)

Hats Off!

Along the street there comes

A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums,

A flash of color beneath the sky:

Hats off!

The colors before us fly....

But more than the flag is passing by....

Days of plenty and years of peace;

March of a strong land's swift increase;

Equal justice, right, and law,

Stately honor and reverend awe;

Sign of a nation, great and strong

To ward her people from foreign wrong:

Pride and glory and honor,-all

Live in the colors to stand or fall.

Hats off!

Along the street there comes

A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums;

And loyal hearts are beating high:

Hats off!

THE FLAG IS PASSING BY!

Here it is. The "apology" that is...

Apology

Sounds to me more of an "I'm sorry you feel that way about what I've done" than an actual apology.

Hi Folks,

I'm at the airport, waiting for the plane to take me to Atlanta.   I don't know why they can have a non stop TO Pittsbugh but not one back.  The flight at the gate before mine was a non stop to Orlando.  Is Tampa really that much further (as the crow flys, so to speak?)?

I went to Borders last night with a coupon to get 40% off three CDs!  I bought Dave Koz's "At the Movies - Double Feature" (it includes a DVD), Barry Manilow's "The Greatest Songs of the Seventies" (with also includes the dual-disc CD/DVD) and for something completely different, someone I’ve never heard of, Moya Brennan's "An Irish Christmas."  I'm listening to that right now and it's quite good.

Moya was the lead singer of Clannad, and is Enya's sister (or cousin--can't remember which).  Enya has a new Christmas CD out, too.

Oh...  And the 25th Anniversary DVD of "Yentl" will be released February 3, 2009.  Just in case you wanted to know that.

Which led me to wonder, were they able to digitally remove Mandy Patinkin?

Thank you all for the lovely comments.  I don't know if I did anything that great.  I just did what I promised.

There's a guy here who has never flown before and he's making comments like he hopes he doesn't freak out on the plane--this could be a VERY interesting tirp.  And I overheard him say he's changing planes in Atlanta to go to Tampa!  Joy--not!

We had one of those amendments about one man/one woman type thing.  I voted No but it still passed.  Now all the elderly that couldn't marry so they could both get their SS checks are going to be in trouble.  They were talking about that when I left home.  Really smart.  Cut your nose off to spite your face.

They said it was already illegal for same sex marrage in Florida anyway so I don't know why it was even on the ballot.

I'm surprised this horror wasn't released for Halloween.

I like the Isaac Bashevis Singer story, and some of the cast, but detest both Streisand's direction and performance.
