I am afraid I am too tired to do a First Post Dance, in fact I am too tired to even attempt an anagram. i just dragged my very tired self home from rehearsal. The 85th Anniversary Gala Concert goes up in just two days, count them, two days (No, please, count them for me, cause I am all tuckered out).

Good evening all! Actually it's 1 in the morning, so it's not really evening at all, but oh well. I cannot seem to get to sleep. Sleep is avoiding me, it is being elusive and also exclusive. I cannot understand why sleep is doing such a thing to me, it is most unseemly. But whilst I am up with nothing else to do, what better time to post at HHW?
First, welcome back to DR Maya! We have indeed missed you around here! A break can be a fine thing now and again, I agree, but I'm glad you decided to rejoin the rest of us in the land of HHW.

TCB, what days does the gala concert happen? Is it Saturday night? If so, when and where? I don't have a show Satuday night, so I would love to be there!
And if you feel like seeing a fairly decent (IMHO) production of Pirates of Peznance, there's a Sunday matinee

I have a confession to make..I am posting this without having read the days notes first. Shame on me! I shall post this and go back and read the notes so dear bk does not bitchslap me from here to eternity and to hell and back.

DRJED - David Ives writes some of the funniest stuff I have ever read/seen. I directed THE PHILADELPHIA section of ALL IN THE TIMING, but my favorite parts were UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.....WORDS WORDS WORDS....and PHILIP GLASS BUYS A LOAF OF BREAD.

Take an actress whose credits include a nighttime soap and a couple of teen horror flicks and let her use her money from those ventures to co-produce a film the she co-wrote the "story" for and stars in and you get THE COMPANY. Neve Campbell (sister of REEFER MADNESS - THE MUSICAL's star Christian) did have the good sense to hire a decent director --- Robert Altman --- for her film. The results are totally mixed. On the positive side, this fictional film about the actual Jofferey Ballet is beautifully directed and edited. Altman's filming of the dance numbers is breathtaking. You see the dancers from many different angles, but you also see clips of the backstage activity that gives you a real feel for how a ballet is presented. Perhaps these scenes seem better than they are because the rest of the film is so bad. There is no real beginning and no end... just a lot of scenes about the members of this dance company. One of the first scenes, for example, has a male dancer complain to the head of the company (the one filled-in character in the film wonderfully played by Malcolm McDowell) that he wants a new partner because he stopped sleeping with his current partner. That storyline is then totally dropped. There are other snippetts of story that are never developed as well. There are cliches galore (a solo dancer hurts her tendon and is replaced by a younger company member who becomes a star while the hurt dancer watches from the wings on crutches) and a few things that don't seem right: would a soloist in a major ballet company really make so little money that she has to wait tables in a bar after performances? But everytime things get a little strange in the non-screenplay there is a well-performed and beautifully filmed number to bring things back to life. And for a film about a dance company, homosexuality is barely implied let alone the subject of one of the snippets. P.S. The Rodgers and Hart Estates must be making a bundle on the five varied versions of "My Funny Valentine" that serve as most of the score - one for a dance number and the others as "source music".

The dell disaster has been fixed. Yea! So far it has yet to crash! Yea!

Today is Saint Casimir Day. Betcha didn't know that. Some guys were talking about it in the metro and I was like "What? Saint Whosit?" Poor Saint Casimir. I think this is a shame. Saint Casimir has a day for a reason and therefore I think we should celebrate it. Break out the Saint Casimir cookies and ham chunks and lets dance the Casmir-Crazy-Dance.

I was supposed to see Wicked last night but I decided not to because Kristen Chenowith was out of the show yesterday and today. While I usually don't mind seeing an understudy (I've seen some wonderful performances by them and as a former performer I know how dispiriting it can be to have people leave because the star is not in the show), in this case I wanted to see Miss Chenowith and also the producer of the BBC Wales radio show which airs my reviews wants me to see the show with her. I got a refund on my ticket and I will go this weekend, either Friday evening, Saturday matinee or Sunday matinee or Tuesday or Wednesday evening next week. I'm going to Playwrights Horizons this Saturday evening so I can't go then. Oh, well. I'll just have to listen to the CD until then.
