I cannot testify to what black Americans feel as our nation celebrates the inauguration of our first African-American president. But I can speak for myself, as a white American who grew up in the segregated nation’s capital of the 1960s. Barack Obama’s day is one that I never thought would come, and one that I still can’t quite believe is here.

Last week I joined a group of journalists at an off-the-record conversation with the president-elect, a sort of preview of the administration’s coming attractions. But as I walked some desolate downtown blocks to the standard-issue federal office building serving as transition headquarters, ghosts of the past mingled with hopes for the future. The contrast between the unemployed men on Washington’s frigid streets and the buzzing executive-branch bees inside was, for me, as old as time.

I actually wish I could watch more of the inauguration. Unfortunately I have immigration court.  It's a telephonic hearing, so I'll have the TV on in my office part of the day.    It's an historic occasion and a day when I think politics should be set aside and we should cheer the fact that we live in a country where power can change hands without a coup or civil war.  No matter how cynical I may be, I really truly wish Obama the best and hope that he turns out to be all that many people believe he is.

I just read a nice article on the Red Cross office in NY.  They moved very quickly to help the passengers & the rescue workers who were cold & wet.

“Volunteers on the scene gave out more than 700 white blankets emblazoned with the agency’s logo, along with boxes upon boxes of sweatsuits and 900 pairs of socks”

I just finished watching a 1931 poverty row film which starred David Manners. It was great fun! But now I don't know what to watch next.

I haven't watched any of the inauguration...in fact I have never watched any inauguration...but I will read about it in the newspaper.

I am enjoying DR Jose's description. I really think this president will do a good job, at least as far as trying to bring people together, instead of apart. Of course it is really up to "the people" to follow through with it.

I'm going to suggest to both parties that in future the inauguration ceremonies include a "Mr America" demonstration so that you will pay more attention to politics.

I wonder if I’m unusual in that I’m not wowing over the fact we are about to have our first Black President.  I just figured it was bound to happen one day.  In today’s world I would be more surprised to see a president who is an atheist.

DR Edi - my intent in commenting on the baggy clothes wasn't that you don't look ok at work, that's an issue I have to deal with. It's just that trying on the smaller sizes and having them fit was a real ego boost for me, thought it might cheer you too

And my comment was just that I understand that you have a job where you deal with the public and it's more important to look put together. I don't mind wearing baggy clothes---I just don't want to go shopping until I really need to. I hate shopping for clothes, or shoes for that matter!

 I also have to go to St. Paul in Feb to argue at the 8th Circuit, so I'm hoping the weather is good that month for flying.

Ugh! The last few days have been a real exercise in the perils of being a pack rat and the advantages of minimalism. A lot of what I'd "saved" I hadn't really saved (intentionally) at all; it just piles up and I don't always have time to go through it. Sigh.

This sounds like my life last year. Finally over the holidays I was able to go through and clear out a lot of stuff that I didn't have time to deal with during the move.

Back from the little birthday party, which was fun.  It was for Ford Thaxton, the fellow who owns BSX Records, and a long-time record producer.  Some very interesting folks were there, including John Morgan and Bill Stromberg, who do a lot of soundtrack re-recordings, most recently some wonderful-sounding Herrmann recordings of Fahrenheit 451 and Mysterious Island.  Also, M.V. Gehard, who owns a soundtrack label called Lalaland Records.  And composer Chuck Cirino, very nice chap.  It was fun.

Hi folks,

This may be the last evening I can post for at least the next 2 weeks. 

After I went out for the hardware shopping, we got to talking and he suggested that with everything that is wrong with the house that we simply gut it and start over. 

Now by "gut" I mean they will tear all the walls down so they can get to the wiring but they won't change the inside set up of the house. 

When it is all said and done I will in essence have an entire new house with all new insulation.  Because they have to tear everything out, it was decided that I will have central heat and air.  The only thing I may have to give up is the utility room.  I may still get one but it won't be as big as I had hoped.  I don't have the money for everything.   

On the plus size, since they are totally redoing the walls, I will have all new cabinets in the kitchen.  The entire house will have tile floors as well. 

I will get a brand new stove, fridge and microwave (the microwave is going to go over the stove) but I might have to keep the washer I already have (that's fine with me) and get a used drier for the time being (that's also ok with me).  I've never had brand new appliances. 

I'm happy and scared to death.  I just wish it was all over.

Sheena may have to go to the kennel for a few days and I may have impose myself on Thelma for the week.  I feel so bad about even having to ask her if I could stay.

Of course, the truly funny thing is that I had originally linked to that article from your post!  I then started forwarding it to my roommates and some of the "Lost" fanatics... Then came back to HHW...

Prior to that, I Xeroxed pages and brought them to muse Margaret.  I came back home briefly and got a call from her before I left for the party, and she'd already read them and really loved them - just the kind of thing I love to hear on a beautiful Sunday.  She had four little suggestions, all right on the money, which I'm going to do right now.  Two involve tiny little changes, and two involve adding a couple of paragraphs - she's so good at seeing these things.  On one the them I'd almost done exactly what she was suggesting but I worried that it would have slowed things down - it won't and it will be better with the little addition.  And that is why we love muse Margaret.  She also gave me a piece of chocolate cake to take home - no flour - literally just chocolate, butter, and egg whites.  It looks quite yummilicious and I shall have it later this evening.

Jose, I thought that the scene at the Broadway theater was just weird.  Even though the settings were period, the lighting and shots of the audience didn't.  And the timing of his arrival was also weird.

And I know that you've said that you can trust the people doing the work, but have you signed any sort of papers yet?  And for a remodel that drastic, I'd think having some sort of legal counsel would be a good idea too.

You have to remember that my house is only 600 square feet and he's putting 2 crews to work on it starting tomorrow morning.  One will do the outside and one will start on the inside.
