If ever there was an Oscar-bait picture it's Benjamin Button, so it leading the field in nominations doesn't surprise me - whether it pulls a Forrest Gump (same writer, same feel, same a lot of stuff) remains to be seen, because Slumdog Millionaire, which, for me, is a much better film in terms of delivering what it sets out to deliver, is the Academy's favorite sort of underdog.

"Button" was also one of the few films to qualify for and be worthy in so many of the Technical Categories.

And in a case of "eerie timing", today is also the one-year anniversary of Heath Ledger's death.

*And I still remember walking through SoHo that day around the time that his body was found, but not hearing the news about his death until I had gotten back to my apartment.

I don't know why people are surprised at the lack of nominations for The Dark Knight - the Academy has a long history of shunning that type of blockbuster - nor did it deserve a director or screenplay nomination, at least in my opinion (IMO, in Internet lingo).

Absolutely agree.

I am happy it was not nominated, in that I was not looking forward to watching it...and I wanted to see all of the "best picture" nominations, at least.

DR MBARNUM maybe your package will arrive today.....and MR BK - yours probably not until tomorrow or Saturday...it was sent First Class.

As long as it arrives before Saturday, so that I will have some fun stuff to enjoy for the weekend!

DR JMK, sadly I do not often get to read the Oregonian. Years ago  I would buy both papers, but no more.

I think this morning was the first time I had watched the news in several days. Channel 8 of course, because I enjoy Kyle Oboshi and that hilarious Drew Carney.

Well, my DH and I went to Lowe's this morning. That means we have much work to do this week.

Crawdad pond?
Cardinal feeding station?
Indoor plumbing? - Oh wait, didn't you just do that?
Vegas Casino replica floors and ceilings?

der Brucer

Well, it does involve digging holes.

We walked over to Circle K to get a newspaper, and three helicopters were circling about a half mile away. I wonder what was going on.

I'm glad you didn't think of it, frankly.  I would fear for your safety!  Honestly, how would you react if you woke up to some stranger taking your picture on the subway?    :)

It is the mentality of the local news here to have three helicopters hovering for hours to see if there is any rain!  With Live team Coverage!

And if the Administration in Washington has its way, things could get better:

Whitehouse Agenda

Quote
Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: President Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.
