I am beginning to think that the Philippines is just ONE BIG PARTY....or at least ever since DR JOSE arrived there....perhaps there is a connection.

I thought the title of the notes today was an assessment.

MR BK - just think LED or PLASMA.

An open question for all

Does anyone know the actresses who play Sister Catherine and Sister Agatha in The Sound of Music?

They are the other two nuns along with Marni Nixon as Sister Sophia who are part of the trio that sing about MARIA

Marni Nixon who played Sister Sophia (The other singing nun) and Evadne Baker as Sister Bernice are the only other nuns other than Wood, Lee & Nelson who are credited.

Sister Bernice is the nun that tells Mother Abbess that she can't find Maria anywhere.

Sister Catherine (????) L  Sister Sophia (Marni Nixon) middle  Sister Agatha (???) right

How odd that after all these years, I didn't realize all the nuns didn't get screen credit. I went to Julia Hirsch's wonderful book on the making of the film, and the information is not there either. How intriguing!

BK has been a Mitsi. advocate for a long time, so I'd be surprised if he doesn't opt for one of their new models. If I were he, however, I would definitely go for something that doesn't require a lamp replacement. My DLP has LEDs to provide the light source, and they're supposed to last 10 years minimum.

LCDs and plasmas, of course, don't require lamp replacements either.

DR Jeanne - Monkey has made a few select appearance over the past few days. However, his photographer, it seems, has been too "busy" being awed by everything here in the Philippines to take as many pictures as Monkey would like.  ;)

Good morning!

It was 47 degrees this morning, but it's going to warm up to the 70s today and should be beautiful. It was so cold and gray yesterday that the sun today will feel marvelous.

I have already had a very busy morning.

I made my second attempt today to get my car inspected. When I went last month, I was told the inspection machines couldn't read the car's on-board computer because it hadn't had time since its resetting from a new battery installation to get going again. I was told to drive the car 50-100 miles and come back. That took a month to accomplish, so I went in today, and, thank goodness, the machine was able to get readings from the car's computer system and the car passed easily.

In spite of the extra effort to get it inspected, I did get a bit of a bonus. NC is changing its inspection timetable, and I won't need to get it inspected again until June of 2010. And no more ugly stickers on our front windshields. The inspection status will now be a part of the car's yearly registration card information.

I'm going to take the day off to celebrate getting one more irritating chore ticked off my list of things to do over the rest of the month. Upcoming trips to the dentist and eye doctor loom.

We had car inspection for many years in Indiana during the 1970's....but for less than 10 years....  I guess the politicians didn't make as much money under the table from it as they thought they would.

And speaking of the Philippines - and Manila, in particular...

While being driven around Manila, I really have been struck by the disparity here between the "have's" and "have's not".  Along the highway, I'll see a row of cinder block houses set up by squatters or small clusters of "shanties" made up on cardboard and corrugated metal, and in the background, a series of new highrise buildings.  Even where my aunt lives, right next her relatively palatial house is a garage that has been converted into living quarters for a family of five.

The most interesting thing, however, is that no one on either side of the economic divide really seems to mind, or at least self-acknowledge the difference in economic condition and status.  It just is what it is. Everyone is happy. I think. I hope.

I find it a really irritating inconvenience. And inspection locations are not as plentiful as one might imagine.

Since I plan to take the day off (unless something pressing arrives in the USPS or UPS mail), I'm looking right now at watching the second MEDIUM from last night. Also, I'd like to watch the third STAR TREK film on Blu-ray: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK.

I plan to watch CASTLE while I eat lunch. And I still have SMALLVILLE from last week. SMALLVILLE is one of the shows I currently watch that I'm considering dropping from my view list next season. I think everything else I'm watching now I'll stay with unless they're canceled (which could happen with CHUCK, FLASHPOINT, MEDIUM though all are given fairly good chances to return).

My favourite deli food is a Langers hot pastrami.  Nothing like it; nothing better!

I'm at Toyland and the person I was to meet here at 10:30 - and the reason I busted my butt to get here in time - is not yet here.

I have no patience for this.

TOD:  Number one favorite thing to get at a real Jewish deli:  Reuben sandwich with sour cream potato salad and a garlic dill on the side.  Number two favorite thing to get: Hot pastrami on rye, ditto, and ditto.  Number three favorite thing to get: Split pea soup!

My Jewish deli of choice ('cause I ain't been to any other more authentic: David's on Geary Street, San Francisco.
