I wonder what Barbara's "beautiful mind" (her own quote regarding not thinking about the Katrina victims) is full of after that.  ;)

I do not see any screaming, blaring headlines today stating that Civilization As We Know It has come to an end because of the switchover to digital television transmission.

The stations have until midnight to make the transition - many have not even begun

eBay has done it again - I've been using basic search for years - and, for example, if I were to type in the letter "b" I would see all the items starting with "b" that I ever searched for.  The basic search page seems to have disappeared and only advance search with its endless options is coming up, which means that all those searches I've made that used to show in a list are now gone forever.  Bravo, eBay, and take your "improvements" and stick them up your rectal cavity.  And before someone comes on and tells me that basic search is that bar at the top, that's not what the basic search page was - it was like the advanced page but much simpler with only the options for highest priced/lowest priced and that sort of thing.  So, instead of purchasing an LP I needed I simply went to amazon and got it there.

DR TCB...   you asked about my reaction to the news about Chastity.  First surprise, I suppose.

Well, I am hoping Chastity will be better looking as a man, as a woman, she is a dog!

DR Jose - would you like for one of your revisits to Twelfth Night to take place during the week of June 29?  Our only definite plans, so far, are Blithe Spririt on Tuesday.

It could.  It will probably depend upon the weather and how crazy the lines will be by then.  But sounds like a good plan.

I wanna go too!

The just-pased smoking regulation bill:

Quote
The bill aims to could curb the roughly 400,000 deaths a year attributed to smoking. It would allow the FDA to reduce how much nicotine is in cigarettes.

Well guess what? If you reduce nicotine content you will INCREASE smoking deaths! Nicotine is not the killer, the smoke pollutants are. When you decrease the amount of nicotine per cigarette, smokes , who are addicted to the drug, need to smoke more cigarettes and thus inhale more pollutants.

I think that is a rather crummy idea.  If Keith weren't working so much he would not have had to use his cell phone for personal calls, basically to me.  How on earth do you prove every call is work related & I'm sure they don't care if the calls are made because you are stuck someplace working overtime.

California can't afford the death penalty

Eliminating capital punishment, which is rarely carried out anyhow, would save the state $125 million a year.
By John Van de Kamp
June 10, 2009

Here's the math.

Today, California has 678 offenders on death row, more than any other state. Yet, in the last 30 years, we've had only 13 executions. With 20 more people sentenced to death each year -- and an average wait of 25 years from sentencing to execution -- the number of inmates on death row is continuing to climb.

Now consider what capital punishment costs. According to the final report of the California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice, which I chaired from 2006 to 2008, the cost of a murder trial goes up by about half a million dollars if prosecutors seek the death penalty. Confinement on death row (with all the attendant security requirements) adds $90,000 per inmate per year to the normal cost of incarceration. Appeals and habeas corpus proceedings add tens of thousands more. In all, it costs $125 million a year more to prosecute and defend death penalty cases and to keep inmates on death row than it would simply to put all those people in prison for life without parole.

On top of that $125-million extra cost per year, California is also facing the need to build a new death house for death penalty inmates at an estimated cost of $400 million.

For capital punishment to be an effective deterrent, the sentence must be carried out swiftly, and in public! Not likely to happen.

For capital punishment to be accepeted, its adminstration must be perceived to be inerrant and impartial. Not likely to happen.

So why not save the money?

Yes - and no parole.

I would consdier a death peanly excepetion for a prisoner serving life for murder who was then convicted of another murder while in prison.
