As for the Topic of the Day...

I'm really not sure what my first amusement park ride was, however, I'm thinking it might have been the kiddie rollercoaster in the park at the base of the Space Needle in Seattle.

When we lived in Connecticut, there was a company that ran all these "portable midways'. I would always win free tickets to them from WRNL. During the summer months, my parents would usually take us to one each weekend - and I'm guessing the free tickets probably may have had something to do with that.

My favorite ride is The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney's Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM) in Walt Disney World.

The drop(s) are great, but it even has a great "pre-show".

I realize that Warner Brother distribution rights went back to CBS (which owns Paramount) but I have always thought of it as a Warner Brothers film.

Just as all the MGM Movies are now Warner Brothers.

Also strange that the original Star Trek series is being distributed by CBS (Paramount) when it originally aired.

I am sure that people born in the last 20-30 years or so don't care but somehow I am a traditionalist when it comes to my entertainment

DR Michael S - With the current state of the "entertainment biz", just be happy that movies and DVDs are still being released. It's just a change of logo on the package.

TOD: Undoubtedly, my first rides were the kiddy rides at Enchanted Isand in Encanto Park (the little trian, the carousel, the chestnut trees, the wishing well....but I digress).

Here's a question for you country music fans out there. Does anyone have Don't Let the Stars Get In Your Eyes as sung by George Jones? It's available by all sorts of people and we have a Perry Como version but we are specifically looking for George Jones (it was used in Big Eden). The only CD listing I can find is out of print "George Jones Sings the Hits of His Country Cousins". One user is selling the CD used for $17.99 and another is selling it for something like $68. I will check at Academy when we get back in the city but for now I thought I would ask at my lovely neighborhood hangout.

I've googled all over the place. I haven't been able to find any Youtube or other video clips of him performing the song either.

By the time I was 5 we had visited POP and Disneyland, and I rode on the Matterhorn and Teacups (both of which I adored and still adore) and whatever rollercoasters they'd let me ride on. The rules weren't very strictly enforced then, so I got to ride on a lot of rides not meant for kids as short as I. I was hooked then and still am.

From then, it was many years where I merely made do with the Octopus, the Tilt-A-Whirl and whatever else was semi-interesting. The rides at the state fair were OK but not nearly as fun as permanently installed thrill rides at real amusement parks!

In what I believe is only the second time in my life I've done this, I took Zach to Target to get school clothes and discovered upon arriving I had not brought my wallet. Luckily I had a lot of cash with me, so we were able to complete the purchase, but (and I know how silly this sounds), I just didn't feel "safe" driving without my wallet and ID.

Yes, we went there a lot (for us, anyway--- meaning several times a summer) from its first year up through my junior year in high school. I enjoyed it a lot (not that we had many choices in Phoenix), but the rides themselves were pretty so-so (comme ci, comme ca, cosi cosa, etc.)

TOD - I remember riding the wooden carousel at Great Falls of the Potomac during my family's mid-1950s visit to Washington, DC. Apparently, the carousel was destroyed in flooding brought about by Hurricane Agnes in 1972.

I'm not a big fan of amusement park rides, but have fond memories of Disneyland and Universal Studios. We were there in 1996 and had great fun on Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, Star Tours (twice!), the ET bike ride, and the Jurassic Park flume. At Disneyland we rode in the front car of It's a Small World, Richard singing at the top of his lungs. Rob (age 11) was mortified.
