I am back from a wonderful dinner with DR vixmom and the vixter; I met them after the show and we went to John's Pizzeria, which is next to the St James where FINIAN'S RAINBOW will open next month. The company was sparkling and the pizza was delish. Who could ask for anything more?
The original production of NINE was, for me, the last of the really stunning musicals: that fantastic tiled set in black and white, the fantastic costumes in black for everyone until the colored ones for the Casanova film, followed after the suicide attempt by the same costumes from the beginning in white, that amazing cast of women and Raul Julia, and the brilliant staging of Tommy Tune. There was also the added attraction of a score I like a lot, scored by the great Jonathan Tunick for a big orchestra of around 27 players. It was one of my greatest moments in a Broadway theatre, especially since most of the shlock produced around it at the time that I was seeing wasn't so hot. The original production was the epitome of chic which is an essence missing a lot from theatre theses days. I wish the film well, although I have a grudge that Rob Marshall was stupid enough to drop Jonathan Tunick from the roster, and I know that chic is a talent Tommy Tune has as a director that I am not certain belongs to Mr Marshall. We'll see.
