Someone at my church gig did the nicest little thing for me--I walked into my office the other day and waiting on my desk was a Toninho Horta-Gal Costa CD of them doing Jobim material.  I'm listening to it now--it's superb.

Our new offer will be 1K over full asking price.  I spent a lot of time with the Credit Union yesterday (which has always been absolutely wonderful on each of the houses I've bought over the years) working through different scenarios.  The loan part is a done deal basically, what may be difficult is getting an appraisal and comps since the house is so frigging big and on so much property.    The CU guy and our realtor both say that may actually work to our benefit though because it forces the bank into a corner vis a vis the appraisal underwriting.  We shall see.  I'm surprisingly nonchalant about it all.   AAAAARRRTGHGG GGHH A:

My first question for ASK BK day....when a director is for hire - I.E. not one of the producers.....who casts the film?  The director or the producer?

I am thinking of these AIP films NOT done by Roger Corman, and the other B-film production companies that used to exist like Bel-Aire Productions and the like.

Director is always in on the casting, although the producer and studio may have huge input and certain needs.

Monday was the 50th anniversary of the Broadway opening of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. There was a celebration at Barnes & Noble, and this blogger writes about it wonderfully:

Some orders, but not nearly enough.  I have been saying for weeks that certain labels have been glutting the market with way too many releases all coming at the same time - even six months ago it wasn't this bad, but now I've been warning them it's going to bottom out for all except the biggest releases by the biggest composers and no one listens - but I've been hearing it now from others that things that would normally sellout quickly are taking longer.  I knew Pressure Point would be a tougher than usual title because Ernest Gold, other than Exodus and Mad World, has never sold.  He's one of the greats, but at 1000 I didn't think it would be moving quite this slow.  And I think it's the glut.

Good morning, all! Around 3 am I read a bit of Sheridan leFanu's novel UNCLE SILAS (God, I want a Vicotrian heriess who isn't such a passive wimp! this heroine is to passive for anyone's good) and shortly thereafter went back to sleep. At 8:30, I dragged myself out of bed to find an email telling me tomorrow's McGlinnventory has been cancelled for the removal of inventory and arrival of new unopened cartons. I wish I'd known on Tuesday before I scheduled tomorrow's events around this cancelled inventory day.

To get back to UNCLE SILAS for a moment, I am enjoying a lot of the novel - Madame la Rougierre is truly a frightening villainess with a hinted lesbian streak - and I want to see the two British film adaptations, THE INHERITANCE with Jean Simmons and DARK ANGEL with Peter O'Toole, which played on PBS around 20 years ago. I suppose Maud Ruthyn, our narrator and threatened heiress, fits the Victorian heroine mode of passive wimp female beau ideal but she constantly aggravates me because she never becomes active in her defense; the day that Madame la Rougierre nearly broke my finger trying to wheedle a secret out of me is the day the bitch gets herself sacked as my governess! So far, Madame la Rougierre has done that to her, tried to sell her into white slavery, promoted a botched abduction, and she creeps about the estate at night reading Maud's wealthy father's private correspondence while looking for "the will." I don't know where UNCLE SILAS falls in the period of le Fanu's writing, but the sapphic and evil Madame la Rougierre reminds me a lot of his pretty lesbian vampire in CARMILLA.

So, today more edits.

DR Elmore, TCM has been showing THE INHERITANCE under the title UNCLE SILAS.  I caught it last month and I was also frustrated by the passiveness of the heroine.  It seemed that the machinations that the villians went through were pretty much overkill since they could have probably gotten away with anything they wanted to outright do to this girl.  And matters weren't helped much by the actress who overplayed the governess almost to comic effect.  Still, it's a fun film to watch if you like Dickens that's been set to overboil.

DR TCB:   I insist you avail yourself of seeing the very next fog-enshrouded town you come to!  There is something quite magical about Italian towns in the fog.

It's a perfect excuse for stopping in every taverna you see and having a hot spiced wine (I forget what they call them in Italian).  Ask for a vino caldo...that should clue them in you want a hot wine.  If they ask about spices, say YES.

If you want to keep your wits about you so that you can find the very next taverna, opt for a cioccalatta caldo...or, a "hot chocolate."

And if you pull into one of the northern Italy ports, find youself a nice ristorante and order a bowl of tortellini a la bolognese -- a wonderful filled pasta (most Italian restaurants in which I dined used the tortellini stuffed with prosciutto) served with a meat sauce.   YUM.

Or, if you're in the mood for pizza, order an authentic margharita for a light meal...or a hearty calzone con prosciutto e funghi.  Oooooooh.

A liter of the house vino rosso should complement either dish nicely.

Yes, DR Elmore, Scotti's is still there (we've never been - let's go next time you're in Ohio!).  The used bookstores aren't so plentiful anymore - my favorite, Duttenhoffer's near UC, while still open has let the cat "aroma" take over and I can't stand to be in there anymore.

Oh, I also just thought of another restaurant for Andy - Izzy's deli.  There's one not far from the Aronoff and right across the street is an old-fashioned office supply store where we like to browse - Spitzfaden.

I was going to go jog, but it's quite nippy out - I'll see how it is in twenty minutes or so, and maybe I'll just do the two-mile jog - that jog is sitting with me much better these days than the four-mile, and it gets me exercised without overtaxing me.
