My favorite film wth Henson creations is the wonderful Dennis Potter film DREAMCHILD, which has woefully never been made avalable as a DVD.

Larry, there's not release date, but is THIS the DREAMCHILD to which you're referring?

Yes, DR George, it is! It is a fantastic film about the 1932 trip Alice Liddell, the girl for whom Lewis Carroll wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, made to New York around the age of 80 for Carroll's centenary celebration. The Hatter, Gryphon, and other characters from the book are Jim Henson creations and they're rather sinister as they keep appearing in the old lady's dementia. The celebration at Columbia University, with the chorus singing (as I recall) "The Lobster Quadrille," is her epiphany when she finally realizes how much Carroll loved her and why her mother stopped his communication with her is truly heartbreaking. Peter Gallasgher is very charming as a young reporter hoping to capitalize of Alice's famous. Everyone should preorder this film. Coral Browne is amazing as Alice.

So tonight we shall head into downtown Miami Beach for dinner at a nice Italian restaurant.

After that, we shall go to the Miami Arts Center to see the Florida Grand Opera.
The performance tonight is a double header -- Pagliacci, and Suor Angelica.  I really like both of them, and they are rarely performed together.  Most oftern, Pagliacci is paired with Cavalleria Rusticana, and Suor Angelica is part of Il Trittico.  So I don't know why they though to put them together this way, but I'm really looking forward to it.

I just reviewed IL TRITTICO for Blu-ray.com.  Puccini did not like these one acts to be removed from the triptych, but Suor Angelica was his self-professed favorite.

And GIANNI SCHICCHI is so much better!

And then there's the current revival of the Jack O'Brien production at The Met right now starring Patricia Racette in all three one-acts. -Along with the formidable Stephanie Blythe.  Alas, Mr. O'Brien changed the order of the operas, and ends the evening with Giannia Schicchi - so that the evening ends on a light(er) note.  Alas, having to sing "O mio babbino caro" after the rigors of Suor Angelica is not the most ideal situation.

I love the Muppets and especially "The Muppet Show!"  Only the first three seasons have been released on complete DVDs, but hopefully, the rest will be.  "The Muppet Movie" is my favorite Muppet movie...probably because it was the first.

As for today's Topic of the Day...

My favorite Muppet: Aloysius Snuffleupagus

Even with "The Muppet Show", I still mainly associate the Muppets with "Sesame Street".  I watched "Sesame Street" while I was growing up, and still tune in every once and a while.  There's still some "magic" even when you see the wires and rods.

When I went downstairs, I had time to watch last week's LAW & ORDER before I started cooking lunch. Elliott Gould was the primary guest star in a very entertaining and often surprising case. As is often the case with this show, everyone is not who he seems to be.

And that was certainly the case with last night's CASTLE where there were lots of people hiding behind false identities. This was probably the best episode of the season in terms of a complex, well-written story with lots of surprises. And I loved the Alexis subplot. Her dad was SO proud of her efforts, and it gave the episode, which was filled with VERY cold-hearted people otherwise, a nice bit of warmth around the edges.

I spent the rest of the afternoon with GIMME SHELTER on Blu-ray. Finally saw the entire movie, a very unusual documentary in which the concert elements were the almost least important thing.

The commentary was several years old, and it was pieced together from individual comments from three participants, but it was very interesting to hear their takes on the Stones, the Hells Angels, Melvin Belli, etc. Enjoyed listening to it.

The other bonus features included four outtakes, a 90-minute call-in radio show (excerpted from four hours) the day after the concert, two photograph galleries of beautiful black and white and color shots, and three trailers.

Oh, DUH!!!

I was thinking back to a rather misguided production put on by a regional opera company a few years ago.  They ended with Suor.  -They, too, pulled the hat trick of featuring the same soprano in all three operas.  The re-ordering of the evening was made in deference to the singer.
