VAGUELY SCOTTISH
« on: December 03, 2009, 12:06:19 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes felt very Scottish and should be read aloud with a Scottish brogue, and now it is time for you to post until the Scottish cows come home.  They're currently eating some butterscottish pudding.

I have a hankering to tell the story of The Randy Vicar and the Malomar, but decorum will prevail.

The notes ponder:

Quote
Book dealers are like no breed known to man – in times of economic catastrophe rather than lower their prices, they raise them. This seems rather inane to me, but what do I know?

In times of economic distress when folks distrust banks, stocks, etc. investment dollars often move to precious metals, gem stones, and collectables (books, art, coins, etc) driving up those market prices.

Well, then, having watched this happen before, I will say those people are idiots - they don't know the hobby, they pay too much, and then, when they're ready to cash in, they can get nowhere near what they paid.  But people don't learn.  And I'm sure the book dealers are happy they don't, but from what I've been hearing, times are very tough for book dealers and smart ones do what they need to do to survive.

Topic of the Day:

The Princess and the Frog
Nine (yes, Nine)
Disney's Rapunzel...has anyone heard anything about this?  It's going to have a score by Alan Menken!

Sherlock Holmes

It may be an entertainment in and of itself, but from the previews it doesn't look like they are going for a feel in and of the world of the original books.

LATIMES

Thomas Newman visits a storm drain culvert while exploring Rustic Canyon, where he recorded the sounds used in "It Got Dark." The work also includes canyon residents' reminiscences. (Genaro Molina/Los Angeles Times / November 17, 2009)

Quote
A member of a musical dynasty writes a postcard about the past

Thomas Newman, whose father, uncles and siblings have composed for films, draws on his life for 'It Got Dark,' being performed by the Kronos Quartet and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
...

Nature has often served as a muse for composers. Vivaldi had four seasons. Beethoven had his Sixth Symphony, the "Pastoral." The Talking Heads had "(Nothing but) Flowers."

Newman looked to Rustic Canyon, with its sycamores, sagebrush and sumac, and to the beaches of Venice and Santa Monica, their erstwhile tourist attractions immortalized in postcards and photographs.

"They are little moments in time that are just forgotten," he says. "I wanted to put music up against the photos and other ephemera."

And so he has. His memories and collected "time capsules" have coalesced into "It Got Dark," a 20-minute concerto grosso incorporating sounds from the canyon and oral reminiscences of its residents. It will be performed tonight and Friday by the Kronos Quartet and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Disney Hall.
...

True - I am very curious, skeptical but curious.

I suspect it will elicit much controversy, so I want to see and judge for myself.

der Brucer

It couldn't be more disappointing than watching Jude Law, under Kenneth Branagh's mis-direction, destroy "Sleuth".

TOD:

There is not one movie coming out during the next 2-3 months that I an "anxious" to see.

Some I will catch in a few months when they become available on DVD, but the movie-going experience no longer excites me.

Good morning, all! I will shortly head to Lexington and 50th to visit Tams-Witmark for a couple of hours. Josh Clayton and I are looking over the original orchestra parts for FINIAN'S RAINBOW, partly out of curiosity but mostly because a couple of questions came up during our band rehearsals that I would like to check out before recording the show.

When I get back, it's more tedious work checking out the differences between my Main Report for BABES and the "official" one. So far, we're in synch but the report's one long mother. I've also got band parts to finish up for two rehearsals next week.

TOD: the only films I'm looking forward to seeing are A SINGLE MAN, because the Isherwood novel is glorious and very moving and I'm very curious to see how it's been transformed, and THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, or whatever the title is.

Sherlock Holmes - although he looks more like a super hero in the previews than Mr Holmes, but I like Robert Downey, Jr

Nine - because I like 8 1/2

And that is all, I think.

Moonlight Serenade, because of Amy Adams, though I haven't a clue as to what it's about.
My problem lately has been not being able to get to a movie theater. They don't seem to be open at 5 a.m., which is about the only free time I have left.

Apparently "Moonlight Serenade" is coming straight to DVD next week. Still, it's one I'll likely catch up with.

Good morning!

The rain has completed its fall, and now we're back to brisk and beautiful weather here. A joyous walk this morning (even a little warm for a sweatshirt), and the blue of the sky is rather blinding this morning.

TOD:

The only film I'll likelygo to the theater to see will be NINE. All the others I'll catch on Blu-ray or pay cable during the next year. (I'm still catching up with some of last year's Oscar contenders as they arrive on paycable since I didn't buy or rent the Blu-rays. I'm talking mostly about BENJAMIN BUTTON, THE READER, and FROST/NIXON.) It'll likely be a year before I catch some of these films on paycable.

No UPS deliveries this morning so it appears I have another free day on my hand. I think I'll likely watch CORALINE this afternoon. It looks like fun, and as I feel certain it's going to get some Oscar and other awards attention, I'd like to see it before nominations come out.

I didn't care much for BENJAMIN BUTTON, but THE READER and FROST/NIXON (along with DOUBT) were my favorite movies of last year.

Great writing.

There are some reruns on tonight, (mostly CW and CBS shows), but there are plenty of new offerings available tonight.

NBC's line-up is featuring new episodes of THE OFFICE/30 ROCK.

ABC has a new FLASHFORWARD and while GREY'S ANATOMY isn't there, there are two episodes of PRIVATE PRACTICE on view.

SURVIVOR is new.

Both BONES and FRINGE have new episodes tonight!
