Costco was crowded but we lucked out and found a short line for our checkout.  This little soiree cost LACCTAA $300, but it was well worth it.  The current students had a great time and really scarfed down the food, and we even had about five alums show up.  We got there early to set up and then the kids didn't get released until six, and we stayed till about seven-fifteen.  Since I didn't eat anything, I went to the Studio Cafe where I had wings and one of their excellent scrambles - bacon, cheese, mushrooms, and onions.  I'm really full, but it was very good.

I did manage to pick up two packages - one of them containing a huge box of Cherry Ripe candy bars, which I got for our Christmas Eve Do.

Woo Hoo it just hit 20 degrees. The warmest in days....we're having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave.  I may be able to walk without my face covered with a scarf....which reminds me.  as I was walking in the ice cold with my entire boday covered except a narrow area around my eyes, I thought parka/burqua  potato/potahto

WE hit a balmy 10 degrees...

Within the next couple of days we will be proud owners of a small chest freezer, thanks to my mother.  She's had it in her garage, but will have no room for it when she moves.  I'm looking forward to stocking up and to cooking some big batches of things like soups and sauces and baked goods.

I have a small chest freezer in my apartment.. .I really like it

Her bout with pneumonia and her not knowing how she acquired it (given that she felt great the day before) has left her taking extra precautions.  She reminded me that as we age, we are more susceptible to the havoc germs can wreak upon the human body.

It might ease her angst to know that she probably didn't "catch pneumonia"; the germ is usually present in all our bodies and a dip in the immune system is what triggers a bout.

On the other hand, that much information might make her even "angstier".

Chest freezers come in handy for storing the bodies of Jehovah Witnesses who insist on repeat visits.

I'm supposed to take a fruit salad to a pot luck dinner on new years eve.   any fun suggestions?  Obviously I can just cut up fruit and mix it together, but thought I'd see if anyone can suggest something better

My wreath is still in garage waiting to be placed on my front door.   My Christmas tree is in the same box it's been in for....oh 5 years maybe....my other Christmas decorations are neatly packed in the storage cabinet I put together a month or two ago.   It seems kind of silly to get any of it out now

My college dorm neighbors woke me up again at 3:30AM this morning.  And of course I had to send a strong email to the management company before I left for work.  Their reply was that a lawyer was sending the college dorm neighbors a letter of complaint.  Would it not have been easier to just tell them to comply with their lease agreement.

I'm done with the stupidity of this whole thing.  I should have done what the police officier at the station told me to do, just move.   But no I had to have a big mouth and open it.   I have a bad feeling.

I probably will not post for a couple of days.   Till the weekend anyway.  Later   ;D ;D

Wel, I have the McGlinnventory in the morning. Good night, everyone.

The vodka's kicking in and I'm sleepy.

The "Appalachian Carols" sure remind me of my Dad. God love him.I do miss him. Sad to be an orphan at 60!

I'm supposed to take a fruit salad to a pot luck dinner on new years eve.   any fun suggestions?  Obviously I can just cut up fruit and mix it together, but thought I'd see if anyone can suggest something better

If you're willing to work:

Fruit Salad with Port Wine
Quote
Recipe Ingredients:
•   1 Round Melon (cut into two halves, flesh removed and cut into pieces)
•   3 Fleshy Oranges (segments removed without skin, pip's or membranes)
•   1 bunch of grapes seedless (cut in halves)
•   1 banana (cut in slices)
•   1 Red apple (cut in quarters and then slice with the skin)
•   1 tin of pineapple (or half of fresh pineapple) (cubed)
•   1 Ripe peach (cut into little pieces)
•   1/2 fresh orange juice
•   1/2 pineapple juice
•   juice of a whole lemon
•   2 shots of Port wine
•   pinch of cinnamon
•   a couple of scrapes of nutmeg
•   1 soup spoon full of denmerra sugar
The preparation is simple, just mix all the chopped up fruit in a ceramic bowl, the melon skins should be immediately refrigerated after the flesh is scooped out. Then mix into the fruit all the liquids and condiments. and leave these to mature and ferment for a minimum of two hours (I prefer leaving them overnight) in the fridge.

Then you present the salad in the chilled melon halves, or in small ramekins etc, you you'd like to indulge you can also place a spoon of clotted cream on each serving on top and a mint leave.

Don't fuss with the melon presentation - just mix the stuff in a bowl and let age overnight.

The port, Cinnamon and nutmeg give it a nice holiday flavor.

I think "mint leave" is "mint leaf" :)

If Sam needs, I will come over to her apartment and kick these people's asses from here to eternity and hell and back.  I'm just in that sort of mood.  I was almost in a potentially fatal car accident a couple of hours ago, driving to the post office.  I was in a far right lane, which had no cars in it so I was just driving along.  The other two lanes were stopped (my lane was a right turn only lane).  So, some car comes barreling through a break in the cars without even looking to see if there were cars in the far right lane (there were several behind me).  I had the presence of mind to do a defensive maneuver that saved both of our asses by inches.

Colorado Boy Shoots Himself in Leg Playing With Pistol Hidden by Christmas Tree
Wednesday, December 16, 2009

CORTEZ, Colo. —  Authorities say a 12-year-old Colorado boy accidentally shot himself in the leg while playing with a loaded pistol his parents had hidden behind the family Christmas tree.

Montezuma County Sheriff Gerald Wallace  says the boy was shot in the calf on Monday morning but the injury wasn't serious.

Wallace says the parents had left for work but other family members took the boy to a hospital.

The sheriff says he won't recommend charges because the parents had left the .22 pistol a reasonable distance from the child.

"A reasonable distance" between an unsupervised 12 year old and a loaded pistol is measured in miles, not feet!
