When I stepped into The Byrd, it was like stepping back into history, both mine and otherwise. It's one of the few remaining classic old movie houses, and, thankfully, it was saved from possible demolition a few years ago when The Byrd Theatre Foundation was formed. The Foundation purchased the theatre which was built back in 1928, and is currently overseeing an ongoing restoration effort of the theatre.

When I began school at VCU, movies at The Byrd cost 99-cents. (A ticket is now $1.99.) It's a second-run house, and they also have a series of Midnight Movies as well as special Sing-Along presentations throughout the year. On weekends, they not only open the balcony, but on Saturdays you can hear "Bob Gulledge at The Mighty Wurlitzer" before the evening shows.

*Because it's a second-run house, they do not show any previews. However, they do show this campy and classic "Litter Trailer" which happens to feature some of my classmates from VCU. -I'm tempted to "ootleg-bay" this one myself someday.

As for "Where the Wild Things Are"...

What a beautiful, haunting, lonely movie. Even though it's based on Maurice Sendak's classic children's book, it's most definitely not a "kid's movie" - as most of the kids and their parents in the theatre found out earlier this afternoon.* It's not a perfect movie, but there are some truly magical and moving moments throughout. I really marveled at the work of the voice and "suit" actors - who knew James Gandolfini could break your heart? I also really dug the score and songs by Karen O and Carter Burwell.

*I was a little worried when I saw all the kids in the theatre. Most of them appeared to be between the ages of four and nine, and one father actually came in late(!) and wheeled a baby stroller - with a baby in it - down the aisle to sit down towards the front. It was not the quietest of audiences, but some of the whispers of "What is that?" and "He doesn't like his sister" kind of fit the mood of the movie. However, once the movie hit the 60-, 70-minute mark, the natives did indeed become restless. But, that just made me concentrate on the movie even more... and made me cry a bit more too.

Wow, I get another day to be at home! That is just too great. I didn't realize how tired I was until I had a chance to relax a little..I think I'm finally catching up with myself. I have a lot to do around the house tomorrow, but it will be good to get some of it done.

I do want to try to get the wooden bench that goes to the office into the prius. I'm pretty sure I brought it back from the lake in the car so it should fit. Then I'm down to just needing help getting the desk into the car and I can probably get Edith to help me with that on Monday. Funny, I finally have real offers of help moving the furniture from the house to the office and I end up doing it myself. LOL. I am my mother's child. She's always doing the same thing.

They just had Pasta Mama from Hugo's on The Best Thing I Ever Ate. Scrambled eggs, pasta and parmesan cheese....I may have to try making that.....

Think I'll take my book and head upstairs for the night. Last night it got really windy and I thought I heard breaking glass several times. I was pretty sure it was icicles breaking off the roof, and since I haven't seen any broken glass, I'm assuming I was right. It is a disturbing sound in the middle of the night. I hope I don't hear it again

I usually go to the UWS location on Amsterdam Ave. -It's just a block away from Levain, two blocks away from Crumbs, and three blocks from GROM Gelato. -Not that I've ever stopped into all of those places in one fell swoop. Well, at least not in that order.

*They also just opened another shop in the new Arcade of Chelsea Market. And it's really worth the trip over and under the Brooklyn Bridge to check out the flagship store in DUMBO.

I think I wrote fourteen pages today - I just couldn't stop. I have no idea if it's any good, but write I did. I keep going back and adding little details, but the funniest thing that I wrote about, in lieu of today's notes, was discovering liverwurst in NY - I'd never eaten it before - it all just came back to me and it was really funny to remember. This is a fairly long prologue, but it does cover an entire year in NY and then about six months back in LA, and it's all a setup to what happens in Chapter One. We'll see what Margaret thinks. I think this is going to be a fairly addictive book to write.

Last night, I had both my new and old computers up and running. I have been getting my e-mail through my old computer, because I hadn't been able to figure out how to get the files from my old computer onto my new computer, and I just didn't take the time to try and figure it out. Well, all of a sudden, my old computer just turned itself off and restarted!

I didn't do anything to it, it just rebooted! And just before it got to the Windows log-on screen, it rebooted again! And then the same thing happened about three or four times!! I didn't know what to do except to turn it off at the power strip. Today, I went to see "Avatar" (it didn't have the greatest story or the best dialogue, but overall I loved it...the special effects were incredible!) and when I came home and turned on the power strip, my old computer rebooted over and over, all over again. I was able to go into "safe mode" and actually get it to start without rebooting. I called my sister's boyfriend (my technical wizard) and he was able to tell me exactly where the e-mail (.dbx) files are and I was able to burn them onto a blank DVD. He also said that the rebooting was due to a virus...DAMN!! Now all I need to do is copy the .dbx files to the correct place on my new computer. Fortunately, I do know where that folder is. We'll see if it all works!

Being able to save all my old e-mail was the most important thing to save from my old computer, but there are some programs that I will miss if (when) my old computer really does go belly up.
