DR MATTH - I had avoided THE FUGITIVE KIND for a long time.....but I finally watched it last year - Joanne Woodward and Marlon Brando really both do a fine job....I was surprised I liked Woodward so much, I usually don't - but she didn't use her Actor's Studio schticks and tricks and she and Brando really have a great chemistry together....

I felt that Brando was doing Brando.

TOD:

I like MONSTERS, INC. & FINDING NEMO.

Off-hand, I can't think of any songs that made an impression.

Warner Archive is certainly good on Customer Service.

I just received the replacement copy of ABOVE SUSPICION, which they sent overnight.

I haven't watched it yet, but my Blu-Ray player does read it.

I must defend my Blu-ray.com colleague Ken Brown, who may have been one of the "twits" BK took to task in the notes over the reviews of LOTR on BD.  Ken is without a doubt one of the smartest, best writers I've encountered on the internets (not that that's saying a lot, LOL), and I find his reviews incisive and inerrantly well written.  Just my opinion, obviously.

Defend away, and I'm sure he's a very nice chap in real life.  That, however, doesn't mean he has a clew about Blu-Ray, transfers, or images, and if he's one of the people who jumped on the problematic Lord Of The Rings transfer bandwagon (I'm fairly certain every one of these people check out the Internet daily to see what the buzz is) then I cannot take him seriously.

I'm up.  The sun is out and I'll see if it's warm enough to do a little jog.

Last night, we watched A BIG HAND FOR THE LITTLE LADY.  It's the 4th-5th time I've seen it.

It's one of those few pictures that, even when you know the ending, is still very entertaining.

Pixar favorites -- "Up", "Wall-E" and "Finding Nemo".

Have no particular favorites among any songs written for Pixar films.

"When She Loved Me" is my favorite song from a Pixar flick.

And though not original, I like Robbie Williams' "Beyond the Sea" over the closing credits of FINDING NEMO.

Must get crackin'.  Just approved the booklet and inlay card for the new title - but have asked for a slight color and font change on the cover.

Ken only had problems with the first film, and they were relatively minor.

My hunch is if anyone's checking anything internets-wise, they're checking to see what Ken says, LOL.

And it took a few days to get an answer, but, yes, that is Julane in Turkey Lurkey Time on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Topic of the Day:  Of the Pixar movies, I think the only ones that I haven't seen are "Ratatouille," "Cars" and "Up" (although I did buy "Up," I just haven't watched it yet...rehearsals, you know).  I've loved them all. :D

Favorite Pixar songs are "You Got a Friend in Me" and "When She Loved Me."

DR Ginny, how do you and Richard feel about a trek to Canton, OH?

The Canton Comic Opera Company, the only company in the world dedicated solely to the preservation and performance of American operettas, has just completed a restoration of the original 1903 musical extravaganza THE WIZARD OF OZ by Paul Tietjens and L. Frank Baum.  The work will be performed on July 10, 2010 at the historic Canton Palace Theatre in Canton, Ohio.  The fully staged production will feature a cast of 40 and the original orchestrations performed by a 30 piece orchestra.  This will mark the first production of the original 1903 THE WIZARD OF OZ with orchestra in over 80 years.  In addition, a special concert of cut and interpolated songs from THE WIZARD OF OZ 1902-1909 will be presented on July 9 featuring a lecture by Larry Moore on the history of THE WIZARD OF OZ and our restoration.

The Canton Comic Opera Company's 2010 summer season also includes a concert production with full orchestra of Victor Herbert's 1909 operetta THE ROSE OF ALGERIA on August 14 & 15.

For more information and tickets visit http://www.cantoncomicoperaco.com

Congrats, Larry!  I wish I could go!

But I lost the two hour BROTHERS & SISTERS which I'll have to find on the net, I suppose (ABC doesn't have On Demand on my cable system).

And I lost last year's Tony Awards which were still on the DVR because I hadn't taken the time to put it on a DVD-R and edited the commercials. Maybe one of you nice folks out there who records and keeps the Tonys can offer a replacement?

I lost GRAN TORINO, too, but it'll be on again. No big deal there.

I watched (and deleted) "Brothers & Sisters."  I also have the 2009 Tony Awards.  But I recorded them to DVD on the XP speed, so there are three discs. :)

And the word of the day is: Shanghai!

And The Song Of The Day Is: (I'D LIKE TO GET YOU) ON A SLOW BOAT TO CHINA

I love Liz Callaway's version of this song!

I do, too, DR George - it's one of my favorites of DR Elmore's orchestrations.

Well, it's actually not mine. It was Alex Rybeck's homage to the McGuire Sisters and I had nothng to do with it! I like it, too, and I've had several requests for it in the past. I always refer them to Alex.

Oops, DR Elmore, I think I've made this same mistake before - sorry.

Would it make up for it if I were to tell you that I think Richard and I will be in Canton July 9-11?

I think I might still have last year's Tonys either on my dvr or Tivo, DR Matt.  If you are in no hurry for a copy, I'll make us both a copy sometime this week. (though I might have to use two discs to copy it to...)

I'm in no hurry at all, DR Dan. I would love any kind of copy, but since I was obviously in no big hurry to transfer my own DVR copy to DVD-R, you can do it when you find you have the time and inclination. I would be very grateful.

What a day I've had! Gad, what a day!

Well, let's see. When I went downstairs, the DVR/cable box was finished setting itself up. I turned it on, and a momentary picture with sound and then the picture flashed off. I kept the sound but no picture. It kept doing this over and over. Each time I'd turn it off and cut it on, I'd get a  momentary picture then it would go to black but with sound. I checked all of my connections. I swapped out the HDMI cables in case there was a handshake issue with them. Same problem.

Naturally, I called customer service again. They sent out a rep. We finally figured out that my HDMI switcher was interferring with the picture. If I took the HDMI straight into the TV, everything was fine. So now I know I can't use the switcher with the cable box. I'll have to go directly into the receiver with it. Irritating but at least it's functional now and I'll swap things around better tonight after I get my work project finished.

WHile I cooked spaghetti for lunch, I watched last night's BIG BANG THEORY. Didn't tickle me nearly as much as the last Wil Wheaton episode. Some good lines and some laughs, but I was expecting more.

Then I watched THE FUGITIVE KIND. I agree, not Williams at his best. The story is deficient though I can see why the language meant so much to him in portraying both the beauty and ugliness of the South of his youth.

Anna Magnini is so uncomfortable speaking English that though there is power in her performance, it might have been even more powerful with a different actress. I imagine Maureen Stapleton must have been chewing nails seeing Magnini doing the part she played on the stage while she played a much smaller role.

I thought Brando was good and hit just the right pitch to his performance (I was expecting something a lot more florid), Woodward over the top but believably Southern.

I got two of the three bonuses watched: the Lumet interview (very wonderful) and the one with the two historians discussing Williams' works on film with particular attention to FUGITIVE KIND.

The one-act plays I didn't get to, but they'll be what I watch when I go back downstairs.
