Worked in the yard all day yesterday, it had been fairly neglected.   If left on my own, I could become very 1970's all over again.  Thank goodness my landlord friends are here in town this week to keep me in check.   I want the place to be a 1912 Craftsman style yard, so there will be lots of roses along the picked fence (I think they might have agreed not to put up a 6 foot solid wooden wall later this year) I thought the yard would just be too dark.  Private yes, but dark.

The news about the bomb scare is really alarming. The only good things is that the perpetrators of yesterday's event were so inept it was discovered in time. I can only hope that all further terrorist activities, and I fear there will be, are performed by people of the same ineptitude.

I just heard on CBS News  that police in New York have decided that it wasn't a bomb.  As it turns out, friends were trying to light the candles on a friend's birthday cake; and the heat from the candles set off all of the sensors in and around Times Square.

I don't like today's gory, uber-violent horror films. I've had to review some, and they've been torture for me to sit through. At the same time, when it comes time to review them, I bend over backwards to find positive things to say since even they aren't all bad.

I agree, Matt H.  Give me an old-fashioned horror film  like THE INNOCENTS or THE HAUNTING, or even PSYCHO.  I would much rather watch one of those, instead of the hundreds of junk movies that specialize in ways to kill innocent teenagers.

I will make one exception.  I do enjoy the first HALLOWEEN.  That is a thrill-ride.

Question: Are there any genres of movies that you dislike so much that you try to avoid them?

For me, it's movies dealing with any sort of substance abuse (e.g. LEAVING LAS VEGAS, THE LOST WEEKEND) or when a pet animal dies (e.g. OLD YELLER, MARLEY & ME, THE YEARLING).

Can't watch 'em.

I cannot think of any subject matter that I would completely steer clear of. The closest would be pro-war films, those that glamourise war. That said, if there was a performer in the film that I liked, I would still watch it.

And even though I do not like gore in my movies, oddly enough I love the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and Herschell Gordon Lewis' 1960s gore fests BLOOD FEAST and  2000 MANIACS.

Howard Shore’s score is long and loud and I’d be hard-pressed to recall a single theme in it.

That's what makes horse racing, bk!

I find each of LORD OF THE RINGS' film scores to be one great achievement after another with very memorable themes for persons, places and things such as The Shire, Isingard, The Ring, Gollum, the returning king, the steward, the gray ships, prayers and fulfillments.  I admire how Howard Shore takes his Shire theme and weaves it in and out of all three films, growing darker and bit more dissonant with each installment.
Of the 'songs' written for the films, only Enya's "May it Be" and Annie Lennox' "Into the West" left lasing impressions on me.
I've seen THE LORD OF THE RINGS SYMPHONY live twice, once with Howard Shore conducting (Sissel was the featured vocalist) and again with John Macueri conducting (Billy Boyd, the films' Pippin was featured).  Your personal friend Susan Egan has also performed with this touring symphony.

but I certainly wouldn’t put them anywhere near my top films of all time list.

Once again, horse racing!   After seeing each of the films theatrically, each one entered a spot in my top ten film favorites.

I barely made it through the first of the three films.

I don't necessarily avoid them, but, I very rarely dip into war movies - I'm talking about the myriad of films about battles, theaters of war, personality war pix et al.
That said, occasionally, something will come along and take me by surprise: I do like THE LONGEST DAY, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and PATTON.
I've seen PLATOON once.
I've never seen THE GREEN BERETS or SANDS OF IWO JIMA or FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS.
I've seen bits and pieces of BAND OF BROTHERS, which I probably will go back to when I have the time to devote to it episode by episode.

And yet, if I'm going to read historical non-fiction, I always check out the World War II books ( I have read SANDS OF IWO JIMA and FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS).

So, in return, I'll pose a question:  Are there any war movies I should be checking out?

TD, there are some very good Bollywood war films...LALKAR for instance, is very entertaining..as was TANGO CHARLIE.

From Bruce:

Apparently, Jane has not been paying attention to the oft-discussed visit - yes, this Friday night will be the visit to Olympia and I hope you can come - we'll all go eat and have a good time.

Did you mean DR Ann?  Have you forgotten I can't travel because of my shoulder?  If I could travel I would have had to go to my uncle's 90th birthday party.  Instead I will be stuck at home wishing I could have gone to at least one of these special events. :(

No, I didn't forget - I was commenting on your response to Ann, which said you knew nothing of date, time, or place.  :)

I think it is very unfair that Keith & I had identical procedures done on our nose by the dermatologist, yet I have a big ugly blister while he has nothing.;D

Time to leave Toyland and head back uptown. I think I will take a bus and see if we get detoured because of the Times Square megillah.

Packages are addressed and we will go grab a bit of lunch then put postage on them.  Also, we're going to try a little experiment this time and not do customs forms on single CD packages.  First off, last time at the post office we were complaining (in a fun way) about all that work and one of the guys told us that a lot of people don't fill them out on packages less than an ounce and never have a problem.  That coupled with the fact that when I called the USPS a few months ago they told me no forms were necessary on those kinds of packages - so we'll try it this time and see what happens.

Sunday afternoon greetings!  We are back after a very rainy trip to Lima.  I drove the last 60 miles and finally got off the interstate and took the back roads from Dayton.
