I'm not a fan of McCall Smith's #1 Ladies Detective series.

I am shocked!  Shocked I say!  What it that doesn't make you a fan?  This is another series of books which I recommend constantly!

LOL!  The #1... series is one of the things that's occupying my reading time right now.  The 2010 featured country for Middfest is Botswana and they have a reading challenge for which I'm supposed to moderate the discussions on the Facebook page.  So far not much activity, but I'm hoping it will pick up.  I've committed to reading the whole series and I'm only halfway through the second book.  My strategy is to have one of those going along with something else.

td & Ginny I knew there would be a reaction to my comment ;D.  The other night we watched the first movie & Keith didn't like it.  Obviously we are in the minority.  I read a few of the books & decided I didn't like them enough to continue reading.

I saw the Botswana link, probably on your page ;)

I very much prefer the Masie Dobbs & Molly Murphy series.

Nest thing you know, DR Jane is going to tell us that she didn't like THE DANTE CLUB, THE POE SHADOW or THE LAST DICKENS, either.  ;)

DR Elmore - if you'll let me know where you're staying in Canton, I'll start planning our jaunt to join you there!

Speaking of trip planning, we're in the beginning stages of planning a NYC trip for August 25-30...

Nope, I'm going to say I never read these.  I don't think they are a series, nor need to be read in order.  Am I correct?  Are you recommending them?

A very moving interview with a survivor of Hiroshima:
http://www.mailtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100502/NEWS/5020326

Her story made me very teary eyed, and what she says is so true. Humanity must wake up. Of course, the comments posted after her story were all about how necessary it was to bomb Hiroshima, etc, etc. Some people just don't get the point.

Had a nice telephonic conversation with cousin Dee Dee, who finished the book and liked it a lot - and that was very nice to hear.

I didn't read the comments after, which apparently weren't what the story was about. ::)

I just watched two more BONES episodes, a really funny one involving a funeral that may bemy favorite of season four and a very moving episode about a beheaded Japanese girl whose brother was a friend of Booth's.

I wish I could win the lottery!

I watched some fun things this evening. I began with the Blu-ray of OUT OF AFRICA. First, my Blu-ray player (Samsung) exhibited no grinding noises or problems loading and playing the disc.

Next, while it's true that Universal has artificially sharpened the image and completely scrubbed it of grain giving peopole waxy expressions (very much like the first issue of GANGS OF NEW YORK) and making it look more like high definition videotape rather than film, I have to say that after I looked at the DVD side of the disc once the Blu-ray had finished, I can see what was in their minds. That version is UNWATCHABLE - so soft and smeared that it looks simply horrible so they went mcuh too far in the other direction.

Would I like a more film-like image? Of course. Could I do without those edge haloes around figures in the foreground in many shots? You bet! But I can stand this; it doesn't destroy the film's quality or effectiveness for me.

They also bumped up the volume level of the sound. Now John Barry's music literally bursts out of the speakers (I had to knock the volume down a couple of clicks). I still adore this score.

Then I watched Thursday night's FLASH FORWARD. I was glad at least one of my suppositions about the mole agent was true. I also did get caught up in SOME of what is going on now that we're down to the last few episodes. The Brian F. O'Byrne storyline couldn't be less interesting to me.

I spent the remaining minutes of my viewing time tonight revisiting the songs "A House Is Not a Home," "Fire," and "Home" from this week's GLEE. Continuing to enjoy them still awaiting this week's new episode.
