Do you want a ST Joseph charm?

Yes, please, DR JRand59! I'll send it to Randy with instructions.

Greetings from Toyland! Thank you all for the health and real estate vibes! I need the money from the real estate sale to get my health in order, and I worry that I'm too late.

We had a good morning at the McGlinnventory. Zak Stains, our naked Hercules, is back from performing at the Spoleto Festival and in fine fettle. Today we finished sorting the printed and manuscript piano-vocal materials into items for sale and for the Library of Congress, per the will's bequest. While Geri, Billy and I sorted and shelved the music, Zak organized the storage space, pulled out every carton of piano-vocal music for us and then started bring us the Full Score cartons. Hopefully, by the end of July, I'll be assembling a list of classical and musical theatre full scores and vocal scores for sale along with a ton of miniature scores.

I think our Woodpecker has an agent!

He was hopping about on the tree outside my window - I suspect looking for royalties for last evenings posts. (He might also have been agitated because the evening's storm had wiped out all the corn and peanuts he has learned to crave (what ever happened to his insect diet?)

And, yes Laura, I filled his food bowl.

Here's a funny story:

Early in my new book, I talk about doing Stop the World in stock in New Jersey.  And I mention that my then-wife went back to LA for a visit during the beginning of her pregnancy.  When I first wrote that section, I wrote that one of the cast members had invited me to her apartment on the Upper West Side (before I knew what that meant - the Upper West Side, I mean) and had made me dinner, and then asked if she could wash my hair (it wasn't dirty, she just liked doing that) - I'd never had anyone wash my hair ever, since I was a baby.  I said yes.  And the memory of that is so clear that it could have happened yesterday - something about it was just so sensual and amazing - I've never forgotten about it.  When Margaret read those pages, it made her uncomfortable for various reasons (nothing else happened that night), and so I removed it, and removing it helped move that part of the book along, and it really needed to.

Yesterday, I get a PM on Facebook from a gal who tells me she was in Stop the World with me and do I remember that she invited me for dinner to her Upper West Side apartment, where she cooked beef stroganoff.  I wrote her back and said I didn't really remember the stroganoff part (although isn't it odd that stroganoff became one of only two hot foods that I make for guests), but that I certainly remembered coming to her apartment - then I asked her if SHE remembered the thing I've never forgotten - the hair-washing thing - she wrote back today and said she absolutely did.  Isn't that weird???  I told her that if I could find those couple of pages that I'd send them to her, because I write about it very affectionately.

I have a very important question: now that I'm  a lady of leisure, I'll be cooking more and want to buy a blender. The main requirement is that it has a glass pitcher and is not too expensive. I have no idea what constitutes (or re-constitutes) a good blender.

Any thoughts from you cooks out there?

Aim for one with a higher HP motor - the main casualties to blenders are from motors overheating trying to do a too-tough job.

It helps if the blender top is fully dishwasher safe (not top-rack only)

der Brucer

Not: If you intend to try things like Mayo - make sure the blender top has a removeable plug to allow you to add an ingredient while it is still blending.

Birding From Bed also has a companion tome:

Gardening From Driveway:

These plants are in pots and stand in front of the retainaing wall that keeps the road from falling into the drive.

Well, if you had a cabin high in the hills, you might be tempted to light a fire to take off the evening chill - and embers rising from that flue could easily start a forest fire.

And then there is the enigma of The Mystery Weed.

In both the side and rear yards there is a volunteer mystery bush. They started out as tiny, fast growing fleshy tunked, lartge leaved tropical looking thingines.  I was assured they were simply annual marsh type plants.

Well, these weeds grow and grow - Jack would be envious!

And they are NOT annual, they drop their giant leaves in the fall, stay barren and ugly for the winter, and continure their reach for heavens every summer.

It now appears they want to have sex:

They are growing huge clusters of green sticky skinned hard fleshy fruits.

I hope they are not alien pod-babies.

DerB, your mystery plant looks like one we have here in the southeast, called Paulownia tomentosa. (Some might call it "tormetosa"!) It's also called a Princess Tree, although it can assume a bush form if it keeps getting cut back. This is a non-native plant from Asia, and like kudzu, runs rampant through the southeast. It has nice stalks of lavender flowers that become clusters of green sticky pods afterwards. When the pods dry, they burst open, release tons of tiny seeds. This tree has very aggressive growth and since the seeds are so small, they can lodge in places like brick and I've seen them high up on buildings peeling the brick right off!

I like this tree when it's under control. There's a big one in our botanical garden, stunning when it's in bloom. I wonder if it's related to yours?
