Well, you've read the notes, the notes were long and seemed like a day, and now it is time for you to post until the long cows come home.

It's raining in Tumwater and has been for quite a while...there's a lot of it coming down, too.

It's nice to listen to. :)

Thanks for the condolences re: my friend, columnist James Bacon.

Frankly, I was really surprised that none of the obituaries that I read mentioned that he was once the lead columnist for The Hollywood Reporter.  They didn't even mention that in their obit.

As I recall, he took over the spot when Mike Connolly died.

That's when I first met Jim, when he was working at the HR...a long time ago.

I watched the new Criterion version of THE THIN RED LINE last night.  I'd seen it previously in a theater when it first came out, then later on DVD.

I know that a lot of people think that this is the greatest war move ever made, but I'm not one of them.

Yes, visually it is absolutely stunning and it has some powerful scenes and terrific performances (e.g. Nick Nolte, John Savage).

But, if any movie could afford to lose 30-45 minutes of its running time, this is it.

The storytelling in this picture is almost non-existent.

Yes, I know the movie is about the battle for Guadalcanal, just like GONE WITH THE WIND was like the Civil War.

But, what's THE THIN RED LINE really about?

Who is its protagonist?

So many characters appear, then disappear (sometimes without explanation), throughout the film, which makes that a difficult question to answer.

If anybody on this board listens to Gregg Hunter's radio show, The World of Entertainment, I'm going to be interviewed on it tonight (19)...right after composer Charles Fox.

I've no idea where the show might air in your area, but I'm scheduled for 9:30 pm (Pacific Coast Time).

That's 11:30 here in Austin, about an hour past my bedtime.

I'd better take a nap this afternoon.

I must get moving.  It's my niece's miniature golf birthday party. I don't have to go till 10am. But I need to shower, dry my hair (which takes a long time), find something to wear, and eat.

And after all that I won't even get to play golf!  Apparently my job is to run around with my 16 month old niece Jadie.  Hopefully she takes her morning nap or she'll be crabby!

Good morning, all! Today I turn 64, but I don't think  my mental age is much older than 10 or 12; it's the bags under my eyes, the wattles, the bald pate and the inability to move that give me away. I have put the laundry into the washers and mopped the floors.  After the clothes go into the dryers, I'll vacuum the apartment and tidy. Then, I'll bathe, have some breakfast and read the birthday cards that have been arriving since Thursday.

This morning, I had 64 emails! Usually, it's about 20, all of them ads, but most of today were birthday greetings or Facebook announcements that my wall is getting lots of posts. It will be fun to read them later. At 4 pm, the foundation producing the Victor Herbert recordings is throwing a small bash for me and 8-10 friends. Selecting a few was difficult because there were so many I wanted to invite. And that's my birthday.

So, to the following HHW family members from last night, DRs vixmom, cillaliz and George, and from this morning, DRs Ben, Druxy, ArnoldMBrockman, and Jennifer, thank you all so much for the birthday felicitations! I hope I haven't missed anyone so far!

In spring, 1980, just a little over 30 years ago, I saw at the long-gone Thaiia on West 95th Street THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL with a composer friend, Thom Heinrichs, from the Drama Book Shop. We laughed all the way back to the subway, said goodnight, and two hours later I went back for the final showing of the movie. The next day, everyone at the Book Shop had to suffer through our praises and I said, Bruce Kimmel is insane and I want to work with him. The wish took me another fourteen years to achieve, and in the past sixteen years I'm sure both Bruce and I have had moments to regret that wish and to rejoice that such a partnership happened. I know that BK saved a career when it was at its nadir and I owe much to him, including this fantastic site and the dysfunctional but highly erudite and entertaining nuclear family that we've all made from it. Thanks! I do love you all.

Now, if we could just sell that damned property!

and then I humbly suggest that you add a side dish of pickled red cabbage and a side dish of hot cinnamon apples to the meal and then set an extra place because I am ready for saurbraten!!!

Sunday morning greetings!  After whining again on Facebook about not being able to connect here, we went downstairs for breakfast and - VOILA! - now HHW opens for me!  It's a mystery.

we caught the end of Shakespeare in Love last night - turned to it just as the play is about to begin

Thank you, dearest vixmom! Outside of love, which I will never be good at or lucky in, and the mystery of what's happening with the Oaf and parent above me, I hope that everything else you wish for me comes true. Love would be nice, and occasionally I stumble and think I've found "the one" but at this age I think it will never happen. Some days I'm full of self-pity over this circumstance and some days I'm happy I'm not involved. I certainly function better when I'm not miserable over it.
