Ah, the media report!

We have been quite busy adding to our DVD collection, der Brucer and I have.  Quite busy indeed!

Der Brucer has bought me the newer sets of Good Eats DVDs, nine new discs in total.  (They're currently on an extra bargain sale over at FoodNetwork.com.)  I know, it seems silly to have cooking shows on disc, but Alton Brown is just damn entertaining, and full of information, and his haircut makes me feel good about my own.  It's one cooking show that holds up to repeated viewings.  Plus, on the DVDs, there are not just three episodes per disc (running about 21 minutes per show), but an extra ten minutes or more where he answers questions that were sent in after the show aired.

Der Brucer is very happy, however, that one episode that has not yet made it's way onto disc is the episode about tofu.  He's not a big tofu fan.  Scrapple is more his style.

Add to those discs the Frankenstein and Wolf Man collections, and a couple of plays on disc that he wanted, Barnum and Nunsense 2: The Sequel.  The Barnum is of the London production with Michael Crawford.  Crawford doesn't appear in Nunsense 2, however.  I don't know what Crawford would have looked like in a wimple.

There was one disappointment which is going to require der Brucer contacting the company that shipped the two stage productions, because they boo-booed on the third disc he ordered, an entertainment called A Murder of Crows.  What he wanted, and it's clearly printed on the receipt, was the wide-screen special edition.  What was instead sent was the full-screen version.  Der B is not pleased at all.  I'm pretty sure it was a clerical error, which the DVD purveyors should rapidly correct once contacted.  Until then, I will simply have to put up with a fuming der B.

As Alton Brown frequently says (quoting Milne, of course): "Oh, bother."

I took long enough to write it, I was sure someone else would have beat me to it!

Dang.  Well, it is Friday nite.  Maybe everyone is out getting drunk.

I hope they taste good.

Well well well well well....WELL!  To quote Cass Daley....  ;D

I have never appreciated AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, but I think that is because I didn't see it in a theater or even at the drive-in....only cut up on TV.  Maybe I will get the DVD.

SWW I so agree about Alton Brown - he is so funny AND you can learn something even if you NEVER plan to cook what he tells you to, and he is easy on the eyes.  And I also agree with derBrucer about tofu!  :P

Media check:

VHS:  EL CID.  I love this movie and was so happy to finally get it, even in a full screen and dark VHS version.  I have watched it three times, and will probably watch it again.  And I may even get the Hong Kong widescreen version for $10 or so.

Frank Thring as King of Valencia sells out his countrymen and sits in the palace getting steam bath from lovely girls and eating and eating while the city is under siege and starving.  Of course he ends up running around the city wall and tossed over with a great look on his face and a bloodcurdling scream.  It is a lovely death.

DVD:  Still watching movies in my 12-Disc 50-Sci Fi movie set recommended by MBARNUM.  Of course the movies are all running together in my mind, but that's okay.  There have been some high points, but don't ask me what they are today.

CD:  A Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers soundtrack import, sound is not so hot, but boy those songs can't be beat!

I COULD GO ON SINGING DVD should be released in a few days, mine is on the way!  And I may have to look for ENTER THE DRAGON, John Saxon fan you know!  8)

This is the first time AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS has been released in a widescreen format on video, so I won't be doing TOO much complaining. It's never been among my favorites, either, truth to tell, but maybe seeing it with wonderful sound and in its widescreen dimensions may make a difference. I don't believe I ever saw it at a theater. It's probably much more astounding on the big screen with all the around the world vistas.

My Media Report:

CD - Judy Garland - CHANGING MY TUNE

DVD - WILL & GRACE - Season 2, disc 2 to be followed by THE VERDICT

DVR - LA DRAGNET, Thursday's WITHOUT A TRACE, and THE FLUFFER

Good morning all!

It's a lovely, sunny day here in Florida!  I hope eveyone has slept well.

I've just taken a little walk around the yard, looking at the flowers and watching Mr. Peeper (my name for a cardinal) up on the telephone wire.  He's so red and handsome (I can't say pretty--he's a guy) with his bright yellow beak.

I shall have to try to get a picture of him for you but not today.

I have a lot of errands to run today but I think I'll take the car.  Running can be so tiring.

Tomorrow I shall sit like so much fish and relax (and this time I mean it).  My only task shall be to pack but most everything was put in the suitcase as it was bought or thought of so it shouldn't take to long.

Have a good day all!

quick note:

Dad had a setback today and is not coming home from the hospital. If he wanted me to stay longer he didn't have to do this!   :)

Since the good vibes and good wishes worked the last time I guess I could use them again.

BK - There is no overture to 80 Days because it starts with the silent film and then blows up to the Todd AO.  I assume the silent film is part of the DVD.

Since people are obsessed with numbers on this here site I thought I'd be the first to mention that tomorrow is the 200th day since the re-design of the site (and still no archive of Donald's shows).

CD - BOUNCE of course, and OCRs of BYE BYE BRIDIE and ONCE UPON A MATTRESS which I am seeing this afternoon and tonight... this is the first time I could have said that since 1960.

DVD - THE TRIPLETTS OF BELLVILLE

VHS - This week's "Show Biz Moms and Dads" a real reality show (as opposd top a staged one) that has me absolutely fascinated.

Good Morning!

As I start my last day of meds.... YIPPEEE!!!!

And I better be F@#%ING BETTER on Monday when I go in for my follow up!

 >:( :o >:( :o

Actually, right now, I'm a little hypochondriacal.  "Is that a new ache?" "What caused that cough?" "Have I always had those bumps on my throat?"  (Yes, they're called "Taste Buds".)  After everything I've been through the past few weeks...  But, actually, I am feeling much, much better now, and yesterday (and this morning), I'm practically feeling back to normal.  But, again, I better be F@#%...

-Sorry, just had to vent... finally!

 ;D

-Hmmm.. Just finished watching the new "Martha Stewart... Lite" on FoodTV.  Hmm... I don't know her name, but I definitely don't like her show, nor her "cooking" style.  Everything is semi-homemade - meaning she uses a lot of canned and prepared foods.  I'm all for convenience, but some of her "recipes" and "suggestions" are just plain bad - not to mention they totally ruin the nutritional value of the base food item.  And her knife skills and cooking techniques... Whoa!  You NEVER spray an aerosol vegetable spray onto a hot grill pan while the pan is still on the flame!  NEVER!!  It could actually "flash back" into the can, and that, most definitely, is not a good thing.  And a note to her set dressers:  Please take off the price tags from the bottom of the plates.   ;)  Sheesh!

As for media, as I mentioned yesterday, it was just a CD: countertenor's David Daniels' "A Quiet Thing"... Hmm... Hmm.. 'nuff said for now....  -His rendition of "My Shining Hour" is still haunting me... Hmmm... Hmm.... :-\

OK, matinee in a few hours.... Laters...

Yes, the silent film is there - and that's what I thought, but I'm sure the usual twerps will come forth and say there was an overture.  Entr'acte and exit music are there.

A lazy weekend for me too. It ia cloudy and rainy this weekend so just a good two days to stay in-doors and watch movies!

First must go to Corvallis and attend the huge plant sale at my nephew's wife's parent's house. Nothing over $2.50!!

Media check:

CD: Compilation CDs of Rogers and Hart songs and compilation of Cole Porter songs sent to me from DR Elmore3003. Part of his MBarnum re-education plan! LOL!

VHS: THE TANKS ARE COMING. 1951 war film starring Steve Cochran and Mari Aldon. Picked it up at Big Lots for $1.00.

Bollywood DVD of the week:

ANDAAZ. Indian Air Force pilot is in love with two women. Nice little drama with lots a beautiful people and music. Nothing particularly special, however.

In my VCR:  "GYUS AND DOLLS:  Off the Record."  It's the filming of the Guys and Dolls revival cast recording with Nathan Lane and Faith Prince, very similar to the filming of the recording sessions of Company, Jelly's Last Jam, and The Producers, also with Nathan Lane.  After that will be a blank tape to tape tonight's repeat of Wednesday's "Star Trek:  Enterprise."  I forgot to put in a tape.

In my DVD player:  "Recording THE PRODUCERS:   A Musical Romp with Mel Brooks."  After the Guys and Dolls video, I have to follow it with this!

In my CD player:  blank CDs to burn last night's Internet broadcast of Candide with Kristin Chenoweth and Patti LuPone.  First I have to break it up into tracks, then burn it.  After that will be the Internet broadcast of Sunset Boulevard with Petula Clark and Michael Ball that was on the BBC Radio.  I taped this last week, and even burned a copy, but those discs are one track each...I haven't broken them up, yet.  I was going to tape the Sondheim concert also on BBC Radio, but I waited too long and it's no longer available.  You know what they say:  Ya snooze, ya looze. ::)

Later in the afternoon, I'm going to my parents' house for a barbeque.  Both my parents have the weekend off, so this is the earliest that we could get the whole family together to celebrate my birthday (which was Wednesday). ;D

I don't know if anyone has been paying attention, but this whole week of Doonesbury has been a near-perfect skewering of the divisive level politics has reached.  The link I'm providing goes to the Monday strip.

As for Around the World in 80 Days, I do remember seeing it in the theater.  I was still in my single digits, though, I'd say about mid-range, so my memories aren't that great, but I went with a whole bunch of kids for a birthday party.  How anyone expected a group as young as we were to sit still for that entire film is boggling.  But I do clearly recall the shot where Parpartout sweeps up the snow to put in the champagne bucket, and the end credits, which were fascinating.

(Hey, they still are, and have never been topped.)

End credits by Saul Bass.  In 70mm ToddAO it was spectacular, and one overlooked the slow, turgid and endless pace.  As I've said, it's basically a travelogue with bits thrown in.  There are some very witty lines courtesy of S.J. Perelman.  In one of the documantaries it's revealed that Todd fired the original director and replaced him with Michael Anderson.  If one looks at the screenplay credit I think one can figure out who was fired.

Good morning, all!  I'm late this morning. what with the constant allergy problems and preoccupation with deadlines.  Last night I had a very pleasant evening watching a DVD of Maria Callas' first appearance at the Paris Opera in 1958 and DR Charles Pogue's HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.

I had thought the only existing footage of Callas in performance was the Second Act of TOSCA from Covent Garden, but this broadcast from Paris also has the Second Act of TOSCA with the same Scarpia (Tito Gobbi) and different tenor, conductor, director, and scenery & costume designs.  She's an amazing performer, and luckily, she's having a night when she's in good voice.

I loved THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, and I wish I'd seen it before I worked with Ian Richardson in 2001.  The cast was quite good - I've been a fan of Eleanor Bron's since HELP! - and I thought DR Pogue's script moved briskly along and seemed very much in its time and place.  I haven't read the book since high school so I really have no idea how much was altered or omitted for dramatic reasons.  Bruce Alexander has been writing a series of 18th Century detective novels around Henry Fielding's brother and while I enjoy them, he occasionally slips a phrase or modern spelling into his narrative that takes me out of the period.  I didn't feel this in DR Pogue's screenplay at all, and I look forward to seeing THE SIGN OF FOUR now.

Media check:
DVD:  too many new things sitting on the floor but CALL ME MADAM's a priority
CD:  Guy Haines' fab album ("Here Youy Come Again" won't leave my mind), some Bollywood from DR MBarnum, and BYE BYE BIRDIE because the Encores! presentation wasa so much fun.
VCR:  nothing
