We are off in a few minutes to see the tour of "Urinetown." I hope I get it (A Chorus Line reference).

elmore, thanks so much for the kind words about HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.   Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide calls it "the best version of the Doyle classic to date"...a sentiment that has been echoed by other Holmes enthusiasts and scholars.

It's my favourite of all my films, because it is the best realization of any of my original scripts and it's the only one of my films I can watch without wincing.  We  did add our own embellishments and Pogue touches, particularly in the invention of the Brian Blessed character...because the original story is a little shy on suspects and red herrings to work effectively as a whodunit these days, but it's still a pretty faithful adaptation and my goal is never to let the audience know where Doyle leaves off and Pogue starts.

In fact there is an interesting story along those lines.  My director and I went to see AMADEUS during our filming (Frank Finlay was playing Salieri and Nickolas Grace was playing Mozart)...Afterward we went to dinner and were discussing the play and Salieri's ability to recognize Mozart's genius, and Douggie Hickox, my director... a lovely man (directed THEATRE OF BLOOD)...said:  "It's like that wonderful line of Doyle's in our script about the failed artist...'He was cursed with a vision of genius, but only a mediocre talent to express it.'   I replied:  "Well, I'm glad you like the line but it's mine, not Doyle's...that character isn't even in the book."

Hope you like SIGN as well.  It has its charms, but  I have some problems with it in terms of casting and some directorial decisions.

Interesting you should mentioned The Sir John Fielding mysteries.  I recently picked one up off the Barnes and Noble remainder shelf and started it reading it.  Didn't get far enough into it yet to know whether I like it or not, because it got bumped for Mr. BK's latest opus in manuscript, which alas has got bumped until I finished this latest pre-production draft, which hopefully will be done Monday and they can get it off to actors...and I'll have a little leisure time.

I apologize for the delay Mr. BK, because I'm really enjoying the book so far and know you need a report.  Hopefully, by the end of this coming week...

Hey, we got to page two.  However, I won't dance, don't ask me.  That is because my stomach is not agreeing with me.

I, too, am having stomach ailments.   Started yesterday afternoon.

It ebbs and flows....and when it flows, there's no stopping it.

I'm a big fan of "Around the World in 80 Days."  It's a fun story, beautifully filmed with spectactular photography, gorgeous music and a perfectly cast David Niven.  It's a long movie, yes, but it has exquisite moments to it throughout.

Given a choice, I'd watch this one over "Ghandi", "The Last Emperor" or "Reds" any day of the week.

Media Check

CDs--"3hree" OCR, "Urinetown" OCR, "Sail Away" OLCR, and CANDIDE IN CONCERT!!!!  SOOOOOOOOO good!  God, I wish I could have been at the concert!

What do you all think of Patti's Old Lady?  I have one friend who thinks she was terrible, and one who thinks she was divine.

DVD--nada

VHS--"Last Tango in Paris"

Saw "Van Helsing" last night against my better judgement.  The movie was damned predictable and overloaded with CGI, but AH, the Hughness of it all!!

And my "Where's Charley?" pics are up if anyone wants to see.  Just request, and I'll link ya.

Wow, I really slept in today.  It's almost 1 pm over here and I just dragged my lazy butt out of bed.  Well, that's what Saturdays are for, right? :)

Hopefully today will be a productive day...lots of laundry doing and house cleaning and such.

It's certainly not a productive day here at haineshisway.com, although it's more productive than other sites.

Lovely pix, Maya.

Now, where in tarnation IS everyone?  I do believe we are sure to achieve a new all-time low and by quite a margin.  And I'm sure I'll be around to contratulate everyone.  Oh, we shall laugh and laugh.

Well!  I never.  Actually I have never........ before, had my session time out between typing my post and trying to post it.  So. I have lost all of my witty comments that were designed to keep all of you in stitches.  I did, at least, save my Good Vibes for Michael Shayne's father.

Now to see if I can remember what else I wrote.

For some reason, I was in the mood for surround sound so I checked the DVD to-watch shelf and pulled out JURASSIC PARK. I was pleased for many years with the laserdisc of the film, but the DVD is excellent. It's several years old, of course, so the transfer isn't as crystal clear as many modern transfers are, but I wonder if maybe the special effects would seem less special if the film were any sharper. Might we not see the difference between real life and the various tricks to bring the dinosaurs to life?

Sound was simply wonderful, and I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

Der Brucer is having a wonderful time looking out his window and watching the birds at the bird feeders.

His habit of calling out to me every time he sees something "interesting" is getting to be a pain, however.  My window has a different angle, and I have to swap glasses to see anything.  Phoo.  (Oohp backwards.)

Still not feeling up to snuff.  What does that MEAN?  Up to snuff?  To snuff is to kill - or there's that stuff you put in your nose (SNUFF, I mean, not the evil stuff).  So, why would I want to feel up to either sort of snuff.  I don't know, I just don't know.

We have received an interesting invitation.  A friend of ours wants us to stuff condoms.

 ::)

Sorry, I should give more information sometimes.  He's in charge of the local AIDS awareness group, and is having a "party" to get as many condoms stuffed into packets, to be distributed around town.  "It's kind of like stuffing mailings into envelopes, but more personal," is the way I described the party to der Brucer.

Personally, I think it could be a fun way to spend an evening.

Is feeling "up to snuff" something to sneeze at, or not?  THAT is the question!
