Have fun at breakfast, LA HHW'ers.  Can hardly wait for the photos...and don't forget a photo of the server!

I can't remember which picture it's from, but here's one of my favorite Marx Brothers lines:

Margaret Dumont, to Groucho, as he embraces her:  Closer!  Closer!

Groucho:  If I was any closer I'd be behind you.

And in which picture is it that Chico and ??? review a contract, focusing specifically on the sanity clause?

That wasn't Margaret Dumont who said, "Closer, Closer." It was in one of their pictures witout her.

Sanity Clause comes from A NIGHT AT THE OPERA.

Groucho (to Zeppo, playing his son who is a student in his class, and who has a comely young woman sitting on his lap): Young woman, would you mind getting up so I can see the son rise?

"If a Nightingale could sing like you, they'd sing much sweeter than they do..."

"closer, closer"  was Miss Thelma Todd, I believe, in Monkey Business.

Breakfast is at ten - Studio City Du-Par's.  It will be ever so nice.  Now, get some sleep then you'll be in fine fettle to do some reading.

I got a phone call last night from someone named Cohen.  I tried making her mad so I could have the wrath of Cohen, but it didn't work.  Damn them, damn them all to hell.

Jay, I read the column last night...but I've had no sleep, you expect me to remember details?  I always read the column...even if I don't post.  And, Yes, BK, after pancakes and sleep, I may knock off chunk of a certain manuscript I've got on my nightstand.

Good Afternoon!

-I just missed Good Morning here on the East Coast.

T-o-D (as oppposed to D-in-T):
Animal Crackers
A Night at the Opera
Duck Soup

-And I'm actually fond of the stage works A Night in the Ukraine (preceded by A Day In Hollywood) as well as The Cocoanuts.

RE: The Tony Noms - No real surprises.  Really, I don't think were any surprises.  -Unless some idiot thinks Sean "Puffy" Combs should have gotten a Best Leading Actor nomination... ugh!  As far as Joe Manello not getting nommed for Wicked, no real surprise there either - imho.

For me, the one race I'm most excited about is the Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical.  I'm so happy that Anika Noni Rose got nominated.  It's a pretty solid category - imho.

The only confusing thing to me is in Caroline, or Change's nomination for Best Original Score.  Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner are listed... and not just Jeanine.  Hmm...  I shall have to investigate further...

On a related note - and I've hinted at this in previous posts... I've been talking with a bunch of friends and professional acquaintances in New York over the past couple of weeks, and to them - and to others - there seems to be sense that Caroline, or Change should win in the proverbial air.  -No matter how much you liked it - or didn't like it.  It's the classic case of "Who will win?"  and "Who should win?"  Again, I liked Caroline, but I thought it was more interesting than good.  Maybe some of the tweaks they made for the move uptown have "improved" the show, but since I won't be able to see the show again until after the Tonys...  We shall see.  -And, again, I'm really pulling for Avenue Q...  But I guess we can save our Tony picks for a few weeks from now.

And on another related note - The Washington, DC "Tonys" are being held tonight - The Helen Hayes Awards.  Alas, I shall be taking it easy at home tonight, but I just wanted to put out a collective "Congratulations!" to all my friends who got nominated!  -You better thank me in your acceptance speeches!!   ;D

I'm disappointed I missed them announcing the Tony nominations. I was watching Amber get her $1 million dollars for Survivor.

Btw, will they do "Popular" from WICKED?  It is such a catchy tune, although it definitely showcases Kristin more than Idina.  Could they do a medley?

Someone working at CBS knew who the final two were, and lists have been circulating for months that the final two were Rob and Amber. So that was no surprise. (I didn't watch SURVIVOR All-Stars at all). But remembering the hatred Rob generated his first time around, and reading the synopses each week of the episodes, I had a hard time believing it wasn't going to be Amber. However, I saw that the vote was VERY close. Some people obviously appreciated Rob's manipulations.

The vote was actually 4-3.  It was very close and I think Rob should have won.  He was my choice.  He has been my favorite since the first episode.

He did get $250K though.  And he proposed to Amber on live tv.

Yesterday, I wrote:

Quote
Woody, your observation was similar to what my dad said when we went to see "Fantasia 2000."  We saw it in Seattle in the Imax theater (not important to the story, but it was pretty darned cool) and he commented that every scene (unlike the original) was introduced...that every scene had to have an explanation.  He said that Walt Disney (especially in regards to the original Fantasia) "assumed the intelligence of the audience."  He feels that no one does that anymore.  I think he's right.

Except for places like HHW, of course!  ;D

Good night, all!

And Woody responded with:

Quote
Uh, yes and no.  The original Fantasia used Deems Taylor to introduce each piece, and explain to the audience what they were about to see.  A number of people seem to forget Mr. Taylor.

And I respond to Woody's responce:

Oops! ::) I guess it's been quite a while since I've seen the original "Fantasia."  I have the three-disc set "Fantasia Anthology" but I now remember that I only watched the third disc with all the bonus material.  I'll have to correct that oversight very soon!

JRand---
Yes I enjoyed that CANDIDE very much.  It's the NYCO production which I saw about 12 years ago and which is being done again next Spring.

Unless they tape "Defying Gravity" at the Gershwin I don't think they will do it.  If they are smart, the will showcase both leading ladies.  I'm just curious as to what they will do for AVENUE Q... much of it is a little to "adult" for broadcast television, and with the wardrobe mishap earlier this season on CBS, I think they will be very careful.

Re: the survivor spoilers

If you want to freak, check this out.
This is something written long before Survivor All Stars started airing.  This guy, Chill One, goes to great lengths so get spoiler info.  And it's incredible the detail he got right.
