THE CHRISTMAS SONG
« on: December 16, 2010, 12:00:59 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were roasting on an open fire, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently roasting on an open fire and will soon be on a bun with bacon and cheese.

Good morning, all! Since my mood over not being paid yet and being $74 overdrawn is nothing but murderous rage, I'm sure my spirits are doing nothing to rid my system of this damned cold. Adjectives I could use to describe myself at the moment all all in the "pathetic and sickly" range. I'm sleeping poorly, and it's a very restless sleep.

Last night, sometime between midnight and 6:30 I took off my glasses - why was I wearing them is the other concern - and set them down in a different location. Since I'm blind without them, I went through a complete state of panic when I got up this morning and couldn't locate them. I crawled under the bed, took all the dressing off the bed wondering if I'd gone to bed with them on. It was only by luck that I found them in a completely different area of my apartment while I was weighing the pros and cons of staying home today or wandering about wearing  prescription glasses over 2 years old.

So, enough of my misery. I've got a morning of the McGlinn estate, pulling scores and vocal scores for items already purchased by the Library of Congress. Then an afternoon of edits with Mr Skip Kennon. Following that, I will wander back here in hopes that the missing check is in the post.

I'm playing this in an attempt to pick up my spirits. I love the Paragon Ragtme Orchestra but their director Rick Benjamin has pathetic taste in hiring sopranos, who are some of the worst singers I've ever heard. I don't know the lady singing on this one may be, but I'm sure she paid him for the opportunity to record. Since his lady soloists on most of the albums stink, I sometimes question his taste in singers.

As for this recording, most of the tracks are band only, and the Paragon Ragtie Orchestra plays vintage charts published for "Hotel Orchestras" of 11 or so players - flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, drums, piano and string quintet - with good tempi. great flair and elan. This recording has wonderful things like the 1903 medley from BABES IN TOYLAND for small orchestra, but I also like the variations on "O Tannenbaum" and the ragtime "Waltz of the Flowers" from "Nutcracker Rag."

I'm skipping the tracks with the dreadful soprano.

We had more snow and ice and I do not know if we will be opening on time this morning, or if we will be delayed.  I shall await a phone call from my sister.

She was scheduled to work on Sunday, and she closed the store.

I am scheduled to work today.  My guess is - REGULAR HOURS.

I like just about ALL Bette Davis movies - but not a LOT of them in a row!

ALL ABOUT EVE
MARKED WOMAN
DEAD RINGER

I like Henry Fonda - but the same - I can't watch a lot of his movies in a row, there's a sameness to him that bugs me.  I can't say I have a favorite.....but I do like ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST.

Thursday morning greetings!  The weather forecasters called this one right and it's snowing heavily here in SW Ohio this morning.  No word on tonight's dinner with the grantwriters yet...
