I really miss Canter's in Los Angeles. I love their corned beef on rye.

Here, in Austin, we have no NY-style delis.

The only one that was here (Katz's) just closed, and it was lousy.

The best corned beef I've tasted in Austin comes from Jason's Deli, which is a non-NY-style chain.

Certainly the c.b. does not approach the quality of Canter's, Nate 'n Al's or even Jerry's, but it is acceptable.

Now, if they would only learn how to make Jewish rye bread here.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA is one of my all-time favorite movies.

There seems to be an on-going debate about the ending.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Is the bulk of the movie meant to be a drug-induced dream?

Or, is that final shot of DeNiro in the opium den supposed to be his memory of a happier time?

In terms of deli, I actually like the Artie's Deli food, but it seems even better when it's been ordered in. We've have exploratory meetings at a collaborator's place on the Upper West Side and she's ordered dinner from Artie's. While I like the atmosphere at Artie's,especially when I've been there with other HHW-ers, it somehow seems like they take even more care with those take-out orders

TOD: There are no worthwhile delis in San Antonio. The people here just don't understand them.

That said, I loved Mort's Vienna Deli in Chicago. It was a little place under the tracks, as I recall. It's now been 30 years since I was last there. Loved the pickles on the table as much as the great sandwiches and the Chicago dogs made with Vienna beef dogs and all those crazy, wonderful toppings.

What is/was that "famous" deli in the Lubavitcher neighborhood in L.A.? I want to say it's by the Farmer's Market, but I may be wrong. We ate there years ago. Maybe it was Cantor's or however it's spelled. There also used to be a really deli around 5th or 6th and 10th in the Village that I would go to when I was in NYC, but I can't remember that name either. I'm no good at all this morning.

They've changed the forecast here minute by minute. First, a foot of snow, then six inches, then a trace, now nothing. Which of course in Portland speak means a blizzard.

I finally, after several attempts, managed to finish the most fascinating doc on Dali and Disney included on the Fantasia BD. I swear there was something encoded in that video that put me instantly to sleep. It took me days to get to the final credits.

Tuesday morning greetings! Richard and I were all packed at 8am and went out in the snow to pick up the rental car for our trip south. When we got back home, I parked his car on the street and jumped in the rental, which we could not even get up the driveway. We took that as a sign that heading for the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee today would probably not be wise, so we're still at home. I've moved tonight's hotel reservation to tomorrow night and Wednesday's to Thursday. At least we're not stranded in an airport...
