TOD - I have just started a new mystery series by Claude Izner (pseudonym for 2 sisters who are booksellers in Paris).  Murder on the Eiffel Tower is the first in the series that features 19th century Parisian bookseller Victor Legris as the amateur detective.

I just finished mopping and the laundry is in the dryers.

Are we in for rain? It's awfully muggy this morning. I'm fighting the impulse to start the AC until after June 1, but I really do not lke hot or humid weather. Period.

Things are perking along with the Appalachian piece. Our bass player Steve McIntyre has a neighbor who know one of the producers of SWEENEY TODD . . . I want to get someone involved to help us raise money to do a recording of some of the show for a demo.

TOD:

Just recently got in touch with Dorothy Johnson who was Miss Oregon 1954, Miss USA 1955, and second runner up in Miss America 1955.

JRand will know Ms. Johnson as the beauty queen daughter in the scandalous 1958 feature LIFE BEGINS AT 17.

This brings me to the TOD, as I have just read her first book MY NAME IS DOROTHY which talks about her life growing up in Oregon.

She kindly sent me her second book, one aimed at young teens, titled LIFE BEGINS AT 17...named thusly because she starred in the movie with that title and she was 17 when she became Miss USA.

Both books are very good reads and the LIFE BEINGS AT 17 is a nice one for any teenage girl, particularly.

Hopefully soon, Dorothy and I will be getting together for a visit. She seems like a very nice lady and I look forward to chatting with her.

Here she is getting the once over by Mark Damon and Edd "Kookie" Byrnes.

Saw a local production of Mack and Mabel last night conducted by my best friend Mark.  Well, the orchestra was great and the Overture sounded wonderful.  The rest of the production, not so much.  I didn't like Mack and I didn't like Mabel and I certainly didn't like them together.  I played the show in 1996 and I saw the show at LA's Reprise in 2000 and I don't remember the book being the piece of crap I saw last night.  I know it's been written and re-written, and I don't know if it was the direction or what, but it was difficult to sit through.  You know when several people you know in the orchestra come up to you and say "Why are you here?  This show is crap", then I know I'm right.  I went to support Mark and my fellow musicians (and local theatre)

DR Matthew, the problem with dead authors is that sometimes they leave their work in the hands of fools: William Goldmabn's widow is now controlling all FOLLIES libretto changes, and I understand that Michael Stewart's sister is now redoing his stage works.

The Happy Ending has been released twice on CD - first in a box set and then separately - the latter is still available.

Somebody needs to toss the script, the facts of the original story and the thought of writing a biography, and just write a plain old-fashioned love story with those songs, one that doesn't end in straightjackets and rehab centers. No one in the audience was alive when those pictures were made and only critics care about the fidelity to facts. You can put in a production note about the real people and then entertain them as much as that music does.
