My bus left DC late due to some southbound traffic coming out of Baltimore. But the driver got everything and everyone turned around in a somewhat timely manner, and we were on our way only about 45 minutes past our scheduled departure. I zonked out for somewhere around Baltimore, and woke up at Exit 13 on the NJ Turnpike... Then zonked out again, as soon as my head hit the pillow at my friend's place. Ah, sleep. :)

Does fried ice cream count as ice cream for the TOD?

I don't see why not?

As for to the Topic of the Day...

Zaytinya in DC serves some wonderful Mediterranean-inspired ice creams and sorbets. My favorites are their olive oil, walnut and saffron.

Oh, and FIG in Charleston also has some wonderful homemade ice creams: Buttermilk-Honey, Salted Caramel, Vanilla with Cacao Nibs.

And the Spicy Chocolate and Rhubard gelati I had yesterday at Pitango were also quite tasty.

Etc., etc., etc...

TOD:

Okay, I'm really running late for work, but I had to answer this question, as it is one that I feel strongly about. Ice cream is definitely my favorite desert. I've tried just about every flavor of Ben & Jerry's and some of them are truly wonderful (my favorite is Chubby Hubby which I rarely see in stores), but the all time best flavor of ice cream in the world is Baskin Robbins Peanut Butter and Chocolate. Others have tried to copy it, but none compares. The amount and consistency of the peanut butter is absolute perfection. Some times I go to Cold Stone and get the Peanut Butter Perfection combination which is chocolate ice cream, Reeses peanut butter cups, peanut butter, and fudge mixed together, and it's great, but it's still not as good as Baskin Robbins.

Had a fun filled weekend of dog sitting and family visiting.

Indeed, SUPER 8 was a bit too intense for Taylor (age 9) and Ben (age 6) and we left before it ended. I will wait till the DVD release to find out how it all ends. I must say that I really enjoyed the film, except for some of the language.

Kyle Chandler was in it, also, and that certainly upped my interest in the film.

TOD:

When I was a kid in Seattle, there was this little place in the north end of the city that made the most fantastic ice cream pies.

Every now and then, I would go with my dad out there and he'd buy a couple.

I'm sure that, after 50+ years, the memory is much better than the reality.

I like ice cream and I think my favorite is Ben and Jerry's Cherries Garcia.

DR Michael Shayne, after watching THE LITTLEST HOBO yesterday, I found that indeed it is related to the two Canadian TV series of the same name. THE LITTLEST HOBO movie was made in 1956 and filmed on location in LA. The first TV series aired in Canada from 1963 to 1965 and then again in the late 70s.

I had no idea the film was about a dog... but was thrilled! It was a delightful movie and the dog (played by London the Dog) was amazing.

BK's friend Wendy Stuart played a crippled girl who the dog  brings a stray lamb to. I think Wendy might be someone fun to interview, so BK perhaps you could put me in touch if you think she might be interested in having a story done.

And what is really nice is that the 1960s LITTLEST HOBO series is available on DVD. There was one episode attached to my DVD of the movie. I watched it and was immediately hooked.

The dog basically wonders around the country and each episode focuses on his interaction with various characters he meets along the way. The story in the episode I watched was well written and very entertaining.

Well, guess who thought today was August 2 and arrived unexpected at the Kurt Weill Foundation?

I am now at Toyland finishing up the orchestra parts. The scores are bound and look fantastic!

Last night I watched an Indian horror film from India titled HAUNTED 3D.

I could not get the 3D glasses to work so I watched it in 2D.

I was not expecting much out of the film, but was greatly surprised at how original the story ended up being (although I guess it could be a remake of some recent horror film that I am not unaware of). I really enjoyed it.

The star of the film is Mimoh Chakraborty (he now calls himself Mahakshay) who is the son of 1980s superstar Mithun Chakraborty.

Mimoh/Mahakshay's debut film flopped, but he didn't give up and this new movie seems to have now put him on the map. And good for him as he was wonderful in it.

BK,

Have you considered doing a solo album with Gregory Harrison. Judging from the clip posted earlier from STEEL PIER, he sure sings nice!

Well we now know why there was carpeting in the master bedroom.  There must have been a smaller bedroom there at one time and when they expanded it, instead of re-doing the entire floor, they feathered in pieces where the wall used to be GOING THE WRONG DIRECTION!!  So the refinishing project just got significantly more expensive.

Actor Edson Stroll who played the prince in SNOW WHITE AND THE THREE STOOGES and also starred in THE THREE STOOGES IN ORBIT as well as being a regular on the old MCHALES NAVY tv series and appearing in two very well remembered episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE has died in Marina Del Rey, California of cancer.

He was one of my favorites, although I never did get the opportunity to interview him...but would have liked to.

and singer/songwriter Gene McDaniel has also died. Loved his songs TOWER OF STRENGTH and A HUNDRED POUNDS OF CLAY!

Here he is in the film IT'S TRAD, DAD!

Peter Filichia mentions BK in his column today

"Today I say a musical theater intellectual is one who can watch the electric shaving scene in How to Succeed and not think of “Dancing Dildos.” It was the enormous production number in The First Nudie Musical that also used the sound of electricity coursing through its, uh, props. Bruce Kimmel, the writer, director and co-star, needed $5,000 to get a new blu-ray made of the 1976 film. He’ll be the first to admit that the first DVD transfer had to make do with footage that was in less good shape, but since then, a better print has been found. So Kimmel went to Kickstarter and asked for contributions from John Q. Nudielovers everywhere, and netted $5,163 from 63 backers. And so, in our living rooms, we’ll soon be dancing along to the dildos that will sparkle more than The Tin Man after he’s been refurbished in Oz."

Here is the entire column in case you're interested
