The other thing I noticed about Phantom of the Opera was that the role of the Phatom is rather small.

I also noticed this for the first time that prior to the singing of the title song the Phantom is refered to as the "Opera Ghost" and even signs his name that way on his letters. The first time he is refered to as the Phantom is in the title song.

Afterwards he is known as the Opera Ghost or The Phantom.

Another moment I enjoyed was Masquerade. It was stage with a huge chorus, bigger than the original staging. The two huge staircases and one upstage and then all the available space on stage.

I did not notice any mannequins it seemed to be all live actors

Yep, it's quite a small role. -It's even smaller in the actual show since there are two doubles that cover some of the physical crosses and transitions. I believe The Phantom's total "active time" is only comprised of his songs and duets.* 25 minutes or so.

*When Colm Wilkinson was playing "Erik" in Toronto, there were times when he would not sing a lick of the show live. They had pre-recorded and click-tracked his vocal, and because of the mask, no one could ever really see his mouth move. Or not move.

does anyone know why Michael Crawford didn't sing?

It seemed to me that when the 4 previous Phantoms were singing there was a point when I expexcted him to come out and start singing and instead the current Phantom came out and sang ---- and then there was a closeupf Sir Andrew who has a look on his face like ..."what the ..."

In other news...

Due to a sort of "perfect storm" of circumstances, I will be heading to Chicago next week for a few days. A company I've worked for before needed a pianist to play for some auditions. A friend of mine is playing a recital. Another friend happens to be in Follies at Chicago Shakes. And since United seems to be running some sort of crazy sale right now on flights between La Guardia and O'Hare - roundtrips as low as $98! - well...

Oh, and Monkey was invited back to the Art Institute of Chicago too.

Found out Nick's memorial service isn't until Saturday late in the afternoon. It would mean driving back 3 1/2 hours at night. Not going to do that. I'll send a memorial and a card. It will be packed. One of those funerals where no one will know if you were there or not

My new cable phone has a cool feature. Voicemail to email. So if someone leaves a message on my home phone it's sent to my email as a voice file. Cool.

I'll be arriving Wednesday morning - and having breakfast at Rick Bayless' torta place in O'Hare. And leaving late Saturday afternoon - and having lunch at Rick Bayless' torta place in O'Hare.

I'll be seeing Follies on Friday night. -Otherwise, my schedule is kind of open. I'll be staying with my friend, David, again. He's in the midst of "crazy busy season" at work right now, so he won't be able to head out on Wednesday or Thursday night, but I'm hoping to connect with some other friends while I'm in town.
