I like the song "The Sword of Damocles" from The Rocky Horror [Picture] Show.
I do, too.

I missed all the brouhaha with the Globes last year (though I watched excerpts on YouTube much later when I was reading about it all), so I think I will tune in this year just to watch the stars squirm.  :)

DR JMK if I had thought he was being clever or sly or ironic - I might have enjoyed it more, since seeing an ego deflated can be enjoyable.  To me, though, he seemed smug and self-serving - not as pleasant to watch.

I am not particularly looking forward to Billy Crystal on the Oscar show - since he makes it all about HIM......

So...

My mom's friend, Susan, dropped off a Thank You package for me yesterday at the house. I was able to arrange some comps for her and my parents to see MY FAIR LADY. My mom sent an email to me last night at 2:17am:

"I will open the card for you rather than mailing it or do you want me to mail it to you.
Will keep the wine & candy."

Well...

While I was in a lesson a little while ago, my mom left me a voicemail stating that she had opened the card. She then read to me what Susan had written. And that there was a $50 bill in their too.

"I'll just keep it all here."

WHAT?!?!?!?

I just left a voicemail for her telling her that she could have easily sent me the card, even after she had already opened it and read it to me. I would like to SEE the card for myself. I also told her I would donate the $50 to a charity of my choosing. We'll see what happens.

Oddly enough, I can recall Liberace dancing on a few variety shows.  He was a trooper.

DR John G - I believe it's in NYPL. I've also seen some clips of YouTube.

*Jason Graae tweeted a weeks ago that he had walked into a restaurant where it turned out there was a cast reunion of COMPANY. Stritch was there, as well as Dona Vaughn and here husband, Ron Raines. I'm not sure if he posted that on his Facebook page too.

Jennifer, I have to wonder if "keeping" an e-book would really prevent the next person "in line" from getting it.

I've never taken an ebook out from the library. But I know DR Jane does. And I think you have to wait your turn. And I thought the next person only got it when the person before was done. Maybe someone who takes out ebooks can tell us.

DR Jenn, you do wait in a queue for books (I was number 80-something when I first put NIGHT CIRCUS on hold.)  But I agree with DR JMK that just because I'm preventing the book from being deleted that I am holding up the queue.  Once my borrowing period expired, someone else move up and was able to download the book.

Snow is covering up the grass here.....but the streets are still clear.

I am converting some OLD video tapes of productions from the 1980's to DVD - and there are some embarrassing performances and productions among them.....some of which belong to me.

DR JRand, what do you used for your converting?  Last year when I began the same project, I used the Dazzle video capture device.  Problem was, I did not like the software that came with it and the Dazzle will work only with that software.

Last night I ordered this device from Amazon.  It is supposed to be able to work with any software (hopefully, with Nero.)

I dimly recall that some of the rehearsals of the COMPANY reunion were videotaped and were up on YouTube but I never seen or heard anything from the actual presentation itself.

DR Jane sorry to hear about your shoulder.  You must love your nook for that reason!

I can't believe how much i am loving my kindle!

I do but after my shoulder popped even holding the Nook was difficult.  Last night I put the Nook down & began my library book. :)

I have another large book on hold for me at the library.  I would read it on the Nook if it were available on eBooks.

DR Jane: I've been reading your interesting posts about your cruise. I've often thought about doing a cruise but I very easily get seasick so I don't think I can risk it.

We have done the Alaska cruise twice & only once did we have rough waters, the last night on open seas back to Seattle.  We were traveling with two people, besides myself, who get sick easily.  We all managed to sleep through some of it. The bigger the ship the more stable it is & we had mid ship rooms not too high up.

That reminds me--I discovered something about borrowing e-books from libraries.  Like a regular library, you can borrow books only for a few weeks at a time and at the end of that period, the book is automatically made inaccessible on your Kindle (this probably goes for Nooks, too.)  But I found that as long as you you do not allow your Kindle to connect to the internet, you can keep the borrowed book beyond the expiration date.  Back in October, I put THE NIGHT CIRCUS on hold and it did not become available to me until the second week in December.  I downloaded it, but because I'm still slogging though the Joe Papp biography, I've had no chance to even begin reading it.  However, since the time I imported the book, I've never turned on my Whysperlync (My Kindle is 1st generation.)  I've received the e-mail message telling me that the lending period has expired, but THE NIGHT CIRCUS is still in my contents and is readable.  Eventually, I will get to it (as soon as Joe Papp shuffles off his mortal coil, that is...)

Interesting.  I'll have to give it a try & see what happens.

DR Jose:  I can top that mom story, I think.

This year's visit included trips down memory lane.  As always, mention of spending time in Asheville NC with my Aunt Belle and Uncle George Pulliam was among the fondest memories.  My Aunt Belle was a hell of a cook and you always felt at home at 26 First Street, Biltmore NC (adjacent to Asheville, but a community unto itself).

While both my aunt and uncle are deceased, I have strong memories of my last visit with my Uncle George who was gravely ill.  He would sit in his recliner, blankets wrapped around him, oxygen tube in his nose, and he would converse.  He also took in my aunt's high-pitched, near-hysteria jags over how traumatic it all was for her.   My uncle died without a will as did my aunt.  Most of their property went over to the state, sorry to say, even though my father had once offered to buy the house and land from my aunt, completely maintain it and alllow her to live there the rest of her days.  She declined.

Over the 20-plus years since my uncle's death, I've lamented I had no remembrance of him.   This past Christmas, while my mom and I were recalling the good times, I voiced my wonder over what had become of my uncle's tiger-eye ring.  He always wore it, and I figured he'd have left it to someone, possibly my dad.

My mom looked at me rather strangely and said, "I have it.  George gave it to me to give to you."   I was flabbergasted.  And only that incredulous expression was on my face.  "I told you I had it for you, but you expressed no interest in having it!" my mother exclaimed.

More flabbergasted astonishment on my face.

"I would never have turned down that ring.  I've wished I had it since Uncle George died.  When is it you 'think' you told me about it."

My mother was stunned.  "It was when I wanted to give you your dad's pocket watch", she declared.   I thought about that...there was a gold watch my dad received from GE when he retired and my mom tried to give it to me after his death.

"I asked you to keep the watch 'for' me...safe here", I said.  "I won't use it at work, and I'd rather know it was safe here."

But, I said, "you never said one word to me about that ring."

She was flabbergasted, got up, went to her safe and retrieved it.

I now have my Uncle George's tiger-eye ring.  It needs resizing, but I'm over the moon about it.

That look like an interesting device DR DtM.

However I borrowed the DVD recorder we use at the theatre.   I attached my VCR to it and then both to a small TV I got at Goodwill for $6.99.   My brother did the final adjustments for me Monday, since I couldn't figure it out (the recorder needed to be attached to the TV so I could see the menu) - and so now it works.

Sometimes I use Format Factory (a free file converter) to convert files to AVI so that I can burn them to DVD - these are files I sometimes download from the Inner Web that won't play after they are burned.  Also easy to use FF to convert MP3's to WAV files and other things.....

Had a sweet eBay experience.  I won a Farmer item from a seller in SLC and told him about my background and my Dad's museum there, and it turned out he was from a military family too.  Well the package came today and he had wrapped it in a huge collage of Farmer images he had printed out.

I had actually thought for a minute when I sent the PM that I shouldn't have mentioned by SLC background to him, but he seemed genuinely touched.

It played at the Vivien Beaumont, and I believe it was filmed for the NYPL Theatre Collection.
