D.A. Pennabaker director of the documentary of the Company cast album will be receiving a honorary Academy Award this year.

Hal Needham will also be receiving a honory AA, his second Academy Award, for his contribution to film. I don't know if its for his fine directorial work in such film classics as Stoker Ace, Megaforce, Canonball Run (I & II), Deathcar On the Freeway and Body Slam but congratulations on your honor.

The Academy Award for Art Direction will now known as Production Design Award.

They have also changed the rules how songs will be nominated. The five songs to receive the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.

I guess this was needed after the old system only had two songs qualify last year

That is correct. It was change after Dreamgirls and Enchanted both received three nominations in the song category and failed to win.

I was going to post last night but I had a doctor appointment and didn't get home until after eight then I had one of my tired attacks just as I was reading the board and had to go to bed.

Good morning, all! I stayed up late to hear Bill Clinton, and I am so glad that I did. I do know that by around noon I'll be feeling the effects of not enough sleep, but I will hopefully be on my way back home from Toyland by then.

When I got to Toyland yesterday, there was a message from my accountant next door asking me to turn down the stereo, so I spent 2-3 hours yesterday rearranging my office furniture. I didn't have an AC-DC adaptor in the office, so I won't know until today if I achieved something god or screwed up the situation until Curtis returns on Sept 20. Hopefully, we will have solved the sound problem for everyone's satisfaction.

So, I've got that to deal withm and some more proofng on the blasted "Willie the Weeper," which is endless. I'm about halfway through the piece now.

And that's my news. More coffee!

We were your typical 1950s board game family, but I've forgotten many of them. "Sorry" and "Chutes and Ladders" always come immediately to mind. Eventually, Scrabble and Monopoly (which we probably never played strictly according to the rules, though I'm not sure now why I say that but I've heard others make the same disclaimer).

Lots of Checkers, Chinese Checkers and eventually Chess (just me and my dad) -- for which I've always maintained a tinge of regret that I never worked to become really good at it.

Card games: "Rummy" (which we never called "Gin Rummy" or "Gin" for whatever reason) and Hearts. Later, in my early teen years, my parents were introduced to Pinochle which was popular in their church group, and we all played that pretty solidly for a few years. I think my grandmother taught me Solitaire -- again, not according to strict rules.

So, here's a photo of David consulting with the cello section. Our principal cellist, Gerald Peregrine, is the nephew of the late great Irish tenor Frank Patterson. Frank and I worked together on his St Patricks Day events at Radio City in the 1980s and 90s. A lovely man. I was hoping I'd see Frank's widow Eily in Dublin, but I tld Gerald to send her my love.

When I was a kid, I loved Masterpiece, a board game with paintings from the Art Institute of Chicago. Taught me a bit about the styles of painters and introduced me to a few that I still love.

Then Scrabble was a major time consumer. Enjoyed that plenty with some good scotch on the side.

Lately, it's been pinochle when I find the time to get together with friends.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Scrabble, Monopoly and Parcheesi were the usual board games of choice in the Simbulan household.

As for card games: Old Maid, War, Spit, Crazy Eights. When I was in college, I learned to play Bridge with some theatre friends, and actually became quite good. However, it's been years since I've played a hand.

And my brothers and I would usually end up convincing our parents to buy us the latest and greatest and coolest board game. Usually they involved moving pieces and/or magnets and natural disasters or tragic events: The Titanic, Typhoon, Bermuda Triangle, etc.
