I'm taking a break from the movie. It's very, very intense but I'd forgotten how visually beautiful it is. Derek Jarman's sets are really interesting and Shirley Russell's costume design is stunning. I love Gemma Jones, and I'd forgotten how large her role is. I'd also forgotten all of the cross cutting between characters: Louis XIII's smug laugh cutting to Vanessa Redgrave's insane one, Regrave's erotic fantasies cutting with the wedding ceremony. All I remembered of the film were the politics and the nuns' public displays of possession. I'm at the point where Redgrave's Soeur Jeanne des Anges has wigged out over the edge from too much erotomania - I worry about Mikey flipping out as well! - and confessed to Father Mignon that the priest comes to her at night as a demon and ravishes her. The political circus is about to begin. It's as crazy as Salem, only lewder.
